Career Services provides resources and services to further the professional
development of students and alumni and help them build a successful career
in public policy and international affairs. Its mission is to complement
graduate coursework by teaching critical career skills, facilitating experiential
learning and offering employment services. In addition, Career Services
provides programs, workshops and events to help students develop meaningful
professional networks.
Career Development Career Counseling Appointments and Walk-In AdvisingIndividual career counseling appointments help current students and alumni with a range of needs from clarifying career goals to implementing a sound internship strategy to practicing interview skills. Semester walk-in advising hours are a quick way for students to receive valuable feedback on resumes and cover letters.
Maryland Mentor ProgramThe Maryland Mentor Program matches community and regional leaders with stu-dents who share similar interests. Mentors provide sound counsel and advice that add immeasurably to students’ opportunities for finding employment and making professional connections. Maryland mentors include di-rectors of private and nonprofit organizations and government officials.
Experts-in-Residence ProgramThe Experts-in-Residence Program capitalizes on the School of Public Policy’s proximity to the nation’s capital by sponsoring weekly visits from experts in various policy fields. Current students access the experts for one-on-one assistance with career information, resume suggestions and networking leads.
International Career ClubThe International Career Club provides career services for the unique needs of international students. With the support of Career Services, the club aims to equip international students with the tools to be more competitive in today’s job market and develop future leaders empowered to build collaboration through enhanced communi-cation techniques and networking skills.
Pi Alpha Alpha Honor SocietyPi Alpha Alpha (PAA) recognizes and promotes excellence in the study and practice of public affairs and administration. PAA members are recognized at spring com-mencement and are invited to participate in chapter leadership and networking activities.
Career ProgramsProfessional Development SeriesThe Professional Development Series helps current students gain a competitive edge when searching for internships and jobs. Traditional workshop topics include resume and cover letter writing, interviewing, job searching and networking. Additional programs address leveraging social media in the job search, de-mystifying the security clearance process and applying students’ Myers-Briggs personality type in the workplace and job search.
Many students take advantage of the School’s proximity to the nation’s capital to experience
multiple internships before graduation. Furthering those possibilities, the School provides
financial support to many students pursuing unpaid nonprofit or public sector internships.
Employer Information SessionsEmployers from across all sectors regularly visit the School of Public Policy to engage and recruit students. These information sessions expose students to the many career fields available to them and employment op-portunities when they complete their degree.
Public Policy Career PanelsPolicy professionals and alumni visit campus each semester to share helpful information and provide insight into critical public policy issues and trends. Panelists also provide guidance on preparing for internship and job searches in today’s markets and taking advantage of important academic and experiential learning opportunities.
Presidential Management Fellows Program The Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) program attracts public service-minded students to the federal government. Through an extreme-ly competitive process, PMF finalists receive an initial two-year appointment and eligibility for conversion to a permanent government position and further promotional opportunities. Career Services helps students in the PMF selection process by providing information sessions, a full-day assessment training workshop, behav-ioral interview preparation and access to the School of Public Policy PMF alumni network.
Job and Internship Resources UMD Policy JobsSPP students and alumni enjoy exclusive access to hundreds of policy-relevant intern-ships, jobs and employer contacts through www.umdpolicyjobs.com. Employers use the site to advertise on-campus information sessions and search for students who post resumes.
SPP Internship ProgramThe SPP Internship Program provides cur-rent students financial support for unpaid internships in nonprofit, community and governmental organizations. Students spend up to one semester working part-time, or
one summer working full-time, on projects that allow them to apply policy-relevant classroom skills to work situations. The SPP Internship Program is competitive and offered year-round.
