OverviewWE is an international charity and youth empowerment movement dedicated to educating and activating young people to become agents of change through service. WE is a family of organizations: WE Charity, ME to WE, and WE Day. WE Charity empowers communities to lift themselves out of poverty through a holistic, sustainable international development model, and is supported through ME to WE, a social enterprise that creates socially conscious products. WE Day is the manifestation of the WE movement, and fills stadiums around the world with the greatest celebration of social good. WE Days feature inspiring speakers, celebrities, and notable performers bringing together tens of thousands of youth as a culmination of a year long educational initiative through WE Schools. Students cannot buy a ticket to WE Day; they must earn their way there through local and global service work.

KPMG served as a Presenting Level sponsor of FY 2017 WE Days in Illinois, New York (Spring and Fall), Seattle, and California. Our sponsorship allows for:

— Opportunity to educate youth that literacy is an important cause while getting them excited about reading

— Alignment with the work our people are doing to eradicate illiteracy through KPMG’s Family for Literacy (KFFL) program.

Laurie Hernandez as Literacy Champion KPMG has teamed up with Laurie Hernandez – Gymnast, Olympic gold medalist, New York Times best-selling author, winner of Season 23 of Dancing with the Stars, and KPMG U.S. Literacy Champion. At WE Days in New York (Welcome and U.N.), Seattle (by video), and California, KPMG’s speakers and Laurie championed literacy and encouraged audience members to share “The Book That” changed their lives, using the hashtag #TheBookThat on social media. For every use of the hashtag during WE Day, and in support of our well-established KFFL program, KPMG donated a new book to a child in need who might not otherwise have access—up to 5,000 books.

KPMG also provided students a special surprise from the stage in New York and Seattle, announcing that signed copies of Laurie’s book I Got This were hidden in gift bags throughout the arena. In California, a selection of surprise books, including Laurie’s, was handed out by KPMG volunteers. In total, 700 books were given out during the on-stage segment across WE Day New York, Seattle, and California. In New York and California, three lucky students, their educator, and a guest also won an opportunity to meet Laurie backstage.

Booth and #TheBookThatKPMG’s booth featured fun and interactive elements designed to get students excited about reading. In Chicago, students had the opportunity to take pictures in an Instagram-styled photo frame, and fill out KFFL bookplates telling us about #TheBookThat inspired them. In New York, Seattle, and California, youth took their turn at a “spin to win” wheel that featured an assortment of leadership themes, walking away with a brand new book that corresponded to whatever theme they landed on. On hand was also a #TheBookThat booklist, summarizing all of the titles available at the booth. Students and educators alike were also encouraged to fill out a #TheBookThat notecard, describing a book that has inspired them and why. For every completed notecard and use of #TheBookThat on social media, a book was donated to a child in need through KFFL.

Over 2,000 books were given away at the KPMG booth to attending students:

734 #TheBookThat notecards were filled out during WE Day New York, Seattle, California, and U.N.

One of the beneficiaries of the WE Day book donation was the Working in the Schools – WITS organization in Chicago. Through First Book, KPMG was able to donate 5,100 books to be given as holiday gifts for students in their mentoring programs. Hundreds of 4th–7th graders were overwhelmed when they learned they were receiving new books to add to their personal library!

KPMG donated nearly 2,000 books through our nonprofit partner First Book based on #TheBookThat usage and completed postcards:

Illinois: 88 Books

New York Welcome: 459 Books

WE Day U.N.: 210 books

Seattle: 376 Books

California: 646 Books

Thanks to books donated through the use of #TheBookThat at WE Day, KPMG volunteers were able to restock the shelves at Treehouse in Seattle, where children in foster care can choose as many new books as they’d like from their free book “store.”

“Sharing the day together with my clients and our children at WE Day in our KPMG-sponsored suite gives us the time to learn one of the most important aspects of each other’s lives – our families. The emotion and excitement of the day sparks compelling conversation, brings us closer together, and creates an unforgettable shared memory. Without a doubt I will invite my clients back again and again.”

– KPMG Advisory Director

“My daughter and I were guests of KPMG for the Seattle WE event. We had an amazing time – my daughter was so inspired by the WE event that she kept talking about this for days to her friends, teachers, and us after the event. She was inspired to change the world and do something significant in her life as a result of the great speeches she heard.”

Not every young person can attend WE Day; the WE Day Special ensures that inspirational content is accessible to all youth across the country, rewarding their commitment to the WE movement and celebrating service actions. KPMG was a sponsor of WE Day’s national broadcast, which was filmed live on location at WE Day Los Angeles on April 27, 2017 and aired on August 4, 2017 on CBS. The WE Day Special gave KPMG the opportunity to amplify the work we do with WE, reinforcing KPMG’s passion for literacy as a cause, and inspiring action to support it. Laurie Hernandez highlighted KPMG’s work fighting illiteracy through KFFL, and KPMG volunteers handed out books in the audience!
