DOVE is committed to partnering
with diverse communities,
families, and individuals impacted
by domestic violence.
We promote hope, healing, safety,
and social change by providing
a broad range of preventive
and responsive services.
Dear DOVE Friends and Supporters,
We are pleased to share our FY 2014 Annual Report with you. Over the past year, DOVE continued to grow and strengthen our programs as well as the organization’s infrastructure and governing body. We welcomed 11 new Board members to launch the year, each bringing passion, energy, and new ideas and connections.
We also provided more direct services through DOVE’s array of community-based services than in any year prior. Because of the continuing economic crisis and dire shortage of space in domestic violence emergency shelters throughout Massachusetts, DOVE turned more attention to working with victims through community service programs – individual supportive counseling and advocacy, contacts made to victims following police dispatches to the home, outreach to plaintiffs in the Quincy District Court Restraining Order Session, and legal services.
We strive every day to both respond to critically pressing needs as well as address the conditions which allow violence and abuse to flourish, with the ultimate goals of ending and preventing domestic violence. While continuing to identify and incorporate meaningful measures of the effectiveness of our work, we hear and see the following outcomes every day:
• Survivors gain information and strategies to increase their own safety and that of their children.
• Mothers receive support to strengthen parenting connections and skills following abuse.
• Guests in DOVE’s shelter are provided safe, comfortable respite from abuse, as well as assistance to pursue or continue their education, to secure jobs, and to locate longer-term affordable housing.
• Youth and adults in our communities learn more about domestic violence through presentations in schools, churches, places of business, and other community forums.
Most importantly, the success of DOVE’s work is expressed in the words of Gladys, who lived in our shelter and has continued to work with DOVE since leaving in the winter to achieve her personal and professional goals:
When you have someone support you for nothing, only to see you succeed, it’s an amazing feeling. I’ve learned so many things about myself being at DOVE. There were days I wanted to give up or felt like things would never get better, but I knew they cared about me and would be there for me in any way they could. I lived at DOVE for eight months. It was way more than a place to live; it’s a place to change.
THANK YOU for helping to ensure DOVE’s ability to bring our mission to life.
Margaret Carr Sue Chandler President, Board of Directors Executive Director

I want to let you know what it is
like to be a resident of the shelter
and how I was treated. You
should know it was one of the
most wonderful experiences of
my life. What I saw as a resident
of the shelter was a group of
people who were so skilled at
what they did they made it look
easy, but more importantly they
genuinely cared about each and
every one of us. - A former client of DOVE’s Emergency Shelter and Community Advocacy programs

H O P EDOVE staff answer over 2,000 calls annually on our 24-hour Hotline – nearly 200 per month – from callers seeking information about domestic violence for themselves, as well as for a friend, co-worker, or loved one. H E A L I N GHealing in the aftermath of domestic violence is a unique path for every survivor. For some, DOVE staff work with them to help them regain their balance and sense of self following a harrowing and traumatic experience. Trauma wreaks havoc on the body and soul and can have a profound impact on one’s physical health and well-being in addition to creating emotional turmoil. DOVE staff work with an empowerment approach to help survivors regain a sense of personal power and control over their lives. Further we remind survivors that they did nothing wrong, and that the abuse is not their fault. In fact, many of their choices, decisions, and actions were made in times and circumstances of extreme distress and were the best choices they could have made in the face of violence or harm to themselves, their children, or to other loved ones. We know that survivors are the experts on their own healing, and, given time and space to process the events and experiences they have had, they will be able to recover and move forward in their lives.
S A F E T Y DOVE’s Emergency Shelter has housed over 5,000 individuals and families in our 36 years of existence. When guests arrive at the Shelter, they are shown to their room and provided a Welcome Basket ~ a laundry basket with sheets, pillows, and blankets, as well as towels and a bathrobe, and toys and books for the children. These items help them begin the process of rebuilding their lives. They then have the opportunity to rest and regroup in a safe and comfortable home. Each Guest meets with an Advocate to learn about the services DOVE offers and to begin to define their own goals including establishing financial accounts, maintaining or pursuing a job or their education, applying for transitional housing, and/or seeking legal assistance. DOVE staff can assist clients to enroll children in the local schools, as well as seek clinical services to support their process of healing. DOVE also seeks to partner with other community organizations to ensure that victims can get help as early as possible, before injuries or the danger they face becomes life-threatening. In addition, DOVE staff serve on the Norfolk County High Risk Team convened by the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office. The Team reviews cases monthly that are brought to the table by police officers, prosecutors, probation officers, or others concerned for the victim’s safety. The team works to coordinate efforts to enhance the victim’s safety while holding the abuser accountable. S O C I A L C H A N G EDOVE staff provide leadership on a variety of projects focused on changing the social conditions that allow domestic violence to persist. DOVE’s YouthSpeak program works with an enthusiastic group of teens in High Schools youth programs. With a curriculum focused on prevention, the YouthSpeak Educators learn and teach about healthy relationships, gender roles, respect, boundaries, and how to seek help when necessary. DOVE’s Executive Director serves on the Governor’s Council to Address Sexual and Domestic Violence, a forum of leaders in the field from various sectors (e.g., education, children’s services, housing and homeless services, the criminal-legal system, and others) to advise the Executive Branch on programs and policies to intended to address, reduce, and prevent domestic violence, as well as Jane Doe’s Policy Committee, which establishes goals and strategies for legislative and budget advocacy at the state level.
