IN SUMMARYThe NIH budget increased a modest amount (2.4%) from FY 2006 to 2007
The period of doubling (FY 1998 - 2003) has ended!Research project grants continue to make up the bulk of NIH awards (64%)AIRI members received over $1.5 billion in NIH awards in FY 2006RPG's account for over 3/4 of NIH support to AIRI membersNIAID is the largest source of awards to AIRI members, while the Office of Research on Women's Health devotes the largest percent of their budget to AIRI.Research Career Awards have become the largest source of training/career development support to AIRI members
The number of original, unamended R01 equivalent applications has continued to fallProjects where the original was unscored have a much lower chance of eventual funding than scored originals
Success rates again fell in FY 2006. AIRI members continued to do better than the NIH averageThe average size of awards to AIRI members is nearly 16% higher than the overall NIH average, largely due to higher AIRI F&A rates
Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center is the largest recipient of NIH support among AIRI members in FY 2006In FY 2006, 74 members of AIRI received NIH supportNumber of first time investigators is relatively stable across yearsThe average age of principal investigators is continuing to climb, reaching 52 in FY 2005, matched by increasing age of first assistant professorship at medical schoolsInvestigators 35 years or younger account for 3 percent of NIH competing R01 equivalent awardsSuccess rates for new applications fall with increasing age of principal investigatorsA different source of information for R&D contracts was used in FY 2006,and data are not final
