Preface
On 1 January 2010, the FWO introduced a completely new panel structure. Characteristic for this structure were the 29 discipline-specific Expertpanels and one interdisciplinary panel. Alongside this new structure, "scopes" were also for the first time linked to each of the Expertpanels. These scopes served as a guide for the many applicants in that they further facilitated the linking of files to the most appropriate Expertpanel.
The new structure was the result of an intensive and interactive consultation process, with optimal participation by the Flemish scientific community. The many reactions and suggestions which the FWO received in this respect, were bundled by five inter-university working groups (one per scientific area) into coherent scopes per panel.
Now, almost five years later, a revision of the structure and scopes was called for. The scientific world is a fast changing reality, where new disciplines can rapidly emerge or gain in importance. These new disciplines, too, must be accommodated within the structure of the FWO-Expertpanels.
The five inter-university working groups were again brought together and tasked to thoroughly evaluate and, where appropriate, adjust the scopes. You can read all about the result of this operation in this brochure.
The main changes are situated in the Cult-panels, where an additional panel, Cult5, is created, reserved for research in philosophy, morals and ethics. Research in religious sciences remains within the panel Cult4.
A second important shift within the Cult-panels is the bundling of research in and/or on Arts into the panel Cult2, together with literature research. The scopes "arts and architectural history" and "musicology" are thus transferred from the panel Cult3. This enhances the coherence of the files to be evaluated.
In the Science and Technology area, the scopes "Thermal and fluid engineering", "Technical thermodynamics" and "Combustion Technology and fire dynamics" are transferred from the panel W&T9 to the panel W&T7, again resulting in a more coherent panel.
Within medical sciences, the titles of the panels Med5, Med6 and Med7 are adapted to better reflect the respective medical disciplines. Only minor changes have been made to the scopes.
The formulation of the scopes of the G&M- and W&T-panels has been adapted, so that here, too, applicants can find their way more easily, and any grey areas are eliminated.
With these adaptations the panel structure of the FWO has been updated so as to help researchers to better find their way and enable the panels to optimally perform their task of evaluating ground-breaking fundamental research.

The scope of Expert panel Bio1 includes fundamental biological research, which focuses by content and/or methodology on molecular, intracellular and intercellular aspects. Space Science includes the whole field of astronomy, and more specific research on cosmology, origin and evolution of galaxies, stars and star systems, planetary sciences, meteorites, as well as solar, heliospheric and interplanetary physics.

The finality of this research is generating fundamental and innovative knowledge with long-term practical applications.

Interdisciplinarity means that progress can be made in each of the disciplines (belonging to a different scientific area (e.g. Biological Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences, Medical Sciences, Science and Technology)) involved by the execution of the collective project, in each of the disciplines separately and/or on a collective area. Projects
where one of the disciplines is only instrumental for the other, where one discipline for example supplies tools for a subject of another discipline, are not eligible.
Based on the above-mentioned criterium, the interdisciplinary expertpanel makes a susceptibility research. Applications can afterwards be redirected to discipline-specific panels.
