  • Introduction This guide tells how to move a firmware downloader program to your system, and usethe downloader to update your printer's firmware. Before updating the firmware in yourprinter, note your printer's settings and have a backup of any downloaded fonts, formsand graphics.

    Compatibility The firmware downloader is compatible with Windows 95, 98, Me, NT 4.0 and 2000operating systems. If your computer has MS-DOS or an equivalent operating system,see Copying the New Firmware to Your Printer at the end of this instruction sheet.

    Find theDownloader

    Program

    Before updating your firmware, you must move the firmware downloader program toyour computer. Select the Start menu, then Run..., then Browse. Select the executablesetup file.

    Updating Your Printer

    Firmware Downloader Program

    Find the executable fileon the provided CD.

    Select OK and the InstallWizard moves the firmwaredownloader program to yourcomputer.

  • Running theFirmware

    DownloaderProgram

    After setting up the firmware downloader program, the computer starts the program andprompts you to select a printer and a port.

    You may choose to perform this task later and select Exit. Then, when you decide to runthe firmware downloader program, select Start, then Programs, then FirmwareDownloader, then Firmware Downloader.

    Select a port and if necessary,select Connect to change theserial interface settings.

  • Browsing for theFirmware

    After choosing your printer and port, select Download. The program will allow you tofind the file that contains the version of the firmware appropriate for your printer.

    Copying the NewFirmware to Your

    Printer

    If you have a computer operating system that prohibits the use of the firmwaredownloader program, than you can copy the firmware to your printer by using theMS-DOS or an equivalent binary copy command:

    copy/b filename port:

    where filename is the name of the firmware file and port: is the communication interfacethat attaches to the printer.

    Make sure your printer and computer are compatible in their port settings. If you need toconfigure a serial port, you can either use the MS-DOS or an equivalent mode com-mand; or use the EPL2 Y command (see Setting Up the Serial Port on the next page).

    Checking YourFirmware Update

    Run your printer's AutoSense routine to get a dump mode printout. This action tests theprinter's media drive, printing capabilities and prints the current printer configuration.

    Find the firmware fileon the provided CD.

  • Setting Up theSerial Port

    To send commands and data to the printer, the hosts serial port parameters must matchthe printers serial port parameters. Verify the printers configuration settings with theAutoSense/Dump Mode Printout.

    The typical EPL2 printers default serial port parameters are:

    9600 baud, No Parity, 8 Data Bits, 1 Stop Bit

    Change the printers serial port parameters with the Y command after communicationhas been established with the host. The host parameters must then be changed to re-sume communication.

    The Y command establishes the serial port communcation parameters where the syntaxis Yp1,p2,p3,p4 and the parameters are as follows:

    p1 =Baud rate values:

    p1 Description

    38 38,400 baud (38K)

    19 19,200 baud

    96 9,600 baud

    48 4,800 baud

    24 2,400 baud

    12 1,200 baud

    p2 = Parity values: O = Odd parityE = Even parityN = No parity.

    p3 = Data bits values: 7 = Seven data bits8 = Eight data bits

    p4 = Stop bits values: 1 = One stop bit2 = Two stop bits.

    After receiving this command, the printer will automatically reset enabling the new rate.

    Example: Y19,O,7,1 sets 19,200 baud, odd parity, 7 data bits and 1 stop bit
