INTRODUCTION

WHAT IS FUTURE PLACE?

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH), Local Government Association (LGA) and Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) have launched Future Place: a joint, two-phase initiative which will unlock place-making potential at a local level by promoting and supporting quality in design, future thinking and knowledge sharing.

The programme has been designed to promote best practice and the potential of innovative delivery, design and funding models, cross-sector collaborations, capacity building and knowledge sharing at a local level.

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

During the first phase, Future Places, we invite local authorities to put in writing their overarching vision (emerging or finalised) for an area and how they are currently working across their programmes to deliver the wider ambitions of the local authority by creating great places. We encourage joint submissions from adjoining local authorities within strategic

planning areas and entries across England from a diverse range of types of places, administrations and contexts (high/low density, urban/rural/coastal). We accept submissions at different stages in the process; from strategy through to completion.

The selected teams (up to five) will each then appoint two upcoming future leaders from within their council and/or other sector partners in the locality to take part in the second phase, Future Place-Makers. This capacity building programme will help the Future Place-Makers to achieve their current place-making ambitions and other visions in the future.

WHY ENTER?

Selected Future Places will be announced at MIPIM, the International Property Market (Cannes, March, 2019), as part of the UK Government Inward Investment programme, receiving international coverage. They will also be given the opportunity to appoint two Future Place-Makers for the second phase, capacity building programme.

A Future Place digital platform, will be used to share knowledge at a local level, throughout the process.
