1. Make the product much more simple.

2.Reduce the space that the product take.

3.Keep it simple, but functional.

4. Make this fit in the Da Vinci building in the first floor.

5.Right now I got an idea of information wall (Mr. John said that he like the idea.). I redesign it and make it simple.


This is my new design (improvement), but I think I still want to make it more functional.

7. If possible I want to make the design more meaningful. For example, like the curve of the design represent the beauty of the wave or I can make the curve becomes the wings of freedom or the wings that lead to the dreametc. This will also combine the art into the furniture.

Advice from Mr. John:

The furniture design is too big and heavy and also costly. You need to make the design smaller in order to fit into the building. I dont think we have enough space to put the furniture. I think I cant tell your design is a space ship shaped and you cant have sharp angles, it will be harmful for the little children.

Name: Miniature LED

The size of the Miniature LED is from 2mm to 8 mm, the small size of the Miniature LED can make different shapes and images and the Miniature LED only needs a low current, and can easily change color by changing the voltage. Another benefits of Miniature LED is that it has super high output: 20 mA can create 2 to 4 Voltage. This type of LED is very common to used in cell phone. Mid-range LED light can allow higher current to flow through and create more brighter lights. This type of LED is often used in lamps, car tail-lights , and emergency lights. Acrylic:

Acrylic is a glass liked materials, but it is much stronger than glass. The Acrylic is only half weight of the glass. Acrylic can also be bullet prove when it is 1 inch thick. Acrylic is also stretch proof, water proof, and can last long for decades. The disadvantage of acrylic is that acrylic will melt or even burn when there is fire, and the price of acrylic is more expensive than the glass. Acrylic is also easy to cut and have different colors. There are two types of acrylic, cast acrylic and extruded. Acrylic is made of PMMA and the melting point is around 130 to 140.

+Material Study: (Choosing LED) I found out that in the online store there are many products

which contains less information, but price. It is very hard to compare.

In my limitations is to reduce to price into US 800 dollars. Price is a very important factor to decide do my product have a chance to be made or not.

For LED lights I decided to use the LED Spot Light - GU10, first the price is reasonable which is US 14.75 dollars and can be used for 20,000 hours. LEDs life expectation is very important and the lights has long life expectation. The light also fit the shape of my design which can put into a flat surface.

+Material Study: (Choosing Wires)

In the wires part I decided to use the UL1007 1569 Lead Wire for my design. It is because the Lead wire can be used in the widest range of temperature which is -40~150 degrees (C), second the wire is the cheapest in my material study which is US 12.85 dollars for 100 inches. Third which is the most important is the wire is only 0.051 inches in diameter.

The three benefits let me to decide to use this type of wire for my product.

+Material Study: (Choosing Acrylic)

Acrylic is the most materials in my product, because it builds up most parts of my product. The price of the acrylic is very hard to compare, some in US dollars , and some in pounds and some is in square meters and some is in kilograms.

The important factors I need to consider:

1. Minimum order (most important)

2. Price (cant be to expensive)

3. The flexible of the size

4. High light transparency

5. Deliver time

I have to decided to use the acrylic sheet HO524. It is because first the price is very cheap about US 2.5~3 dollars per kilograms. Second, the minimum order is 500 kilograms and after I researched the Density of acrylic: (1150~1200kg per cubic meter) I might reached the minimum order. Third, All size is available! Flexibility is very important for my furniture. Forth, the transparency is above 95%, which is excellent! Fifth, it only took three days to deliver!

+Design Summary

This redesign and the investigation is based on the last furniture design I made. The whole investigation is focused on improving the design based on the opinions made by the clinic. My last design has a lot of functions, for example like chair, information wall, performance stage, reading area, desks, and also bookshelves and lights. However, the size and cost of the design is not realistic and doesnt fit the building. Therefore, in this investigation, I decided to reduce the size of the furniture into 1/8 and at the same time the cost had been reduced. I only choose the three most important function, desk, chair and information wall to make the design to fit better for the school.

+Effects on the environment

The furniture design would have a very positive effect on the environment. You can see the lights shining from the green acrylic furniture and you can grab a book and sit on the acrylic. The teachers and students, school clubs, and even student council can use the information wall on my furniture to exchange information. The furniture would be very useful for our school and I believed this furniture showed the how art can combine into a daily furniture. This leave shape and the simple design of the furniture would help us understand the importance of nature.

+Design Brief

I have already made a design and in this design cycle I am going to improve them. At first I had designed a furniture which is multi function, space ship-shaped. But after the I found out it is impossible to build a furniture in that size and the design is not comfortable because it is made from wood. This time I am going to reduce the size of the furniture, and made the furniture more environmental friendly. My product is going to be made in acrylic and it is going to be functional, and super cool and amazing, and it is going to be a place for students, parents and teachers to relax. It would be great for creating such as place in Da Vinci Building for students. The ice liked acrylic creates a shape of the wave in a beautiful curve, the LED lights shines and paints on the invisible canvas. People can sits and read information in this wonderland and enjoy themselves. An invisible stairs build up a way to Eco garden and each planets were planted in recycled plastic bottles. This furniture is going to make the school more extraordinary.
