“The chairs allow the cathedral to be used in flexible configurations... and provide the opportunity to develop reflective spaces and places for prayer focus in the chapels.” – Reverend Peter Catt, St Johns Cathedral

Our Client St John’s Cathedral, Brisbane

A renowned Brisbane landmark, St John’s Cathedral attracts a diverse congregation. The Ministry seeks to bring Anglican tradition into dialogue with today’s issues and needs.

The Brief

A lack of comfort and flexibility were the driving factors behind the decision to replace existing pews and chapel chairs at St John’s Cathedral with new, more comfortable and versatile chairs.

Furniture Solution

Howe 40/4 chairs in walnut veneer were the Ministry’s chair of choice. The considerations of the ministry were manifold:

Comfort. Legendary for its comfort, the 40/4 chair has been in production since 1964.

Longevity. The chairs carry a 15 year warranty. Servicing requirements are carried out locally by Living Edge.

Amenity. The chairs can be linked to form rows to prevent unwanted movement. When stacked in trolleys, 160 chairs can be neatly stored using just 1.7m2 of floor space.

Overseas Experience. St Paul’s Cathedral in London has had 2,500 Howe 40/4 chairs since 1973. The chair is also used in Cathedrals in Salisbury, Oxford, and in many other eminent locations across the globe.

ABOUT HOWE

About HOWE

Based in Denmark, HOWE develops and sells furniture for the global contract market. Its design philosophy is rooted in the Bauhaus tradition of combining design, simplicity, quality and functionality. And HOWE takes it further – requiring that all of its furniture solutions be exceptional in folding or stacking, thus freeing up space for using any room in many different ways.

In HOWE’s perspective, functionality and versatility are fundamental, and considerable effort is made to ensure that each design will blend easily into any interior, enhancing the architecture and visual ambience.

HOWE is an ardent advocate of the Total Cost of Ownership concept. Its hard-wearing furniture solutions have a proven track record stretching back more than 40 years. Additionally, as the multi-functional and space-saving properties of HOWE products increase the usability of a given space, the need for valuable space is reduced. The value of HOWE product is easily measured in these purely economic terms.

When also taking into account the well-being of users, aesthetic value, ease of handling, environmental benefits, component replacement and resale value, HOWE solutions are almost unparalleled.

Green Thinking

HOWE’s durable, spacesaving and multi-functional furniture solutions use fewer resources. HOWE products are designed with few components, so they can be easily disassembled and sorted.

HOWE is phasing out the use of chemicals and constantly upgrading its products’ recycled content. As well as protecting the global climate; HOWE’s environmental policy is driven by the impact of its products on the indoor working climate and the well-being of the people who spend their time in the buildings it furnishes.

HOWE 40/4 CHAIR Designed by David Rowland, 1964

David Rowland’s award-winning 40/4 stackable chair is arguably one of the most important designs of the 20th century. As many as 40 chairs stack quickly, neatly and completely to a height of just 4 feet, hence its 40/4 name.

The 40/4 chair is featured in design collections and museums the world over, in recognition of its elegant lines, excellent ergonomics, unsurpassed stacking and handling, as well as space-saving advantages for flexible interiors.

With over eight million sold since its inception in 1964, the 40/4 stackable chair is an indisputable icon of multifunctional design, which continues to attract architects and designers who are amazed by its ability to create space – without taking up space.

Our Client St Barnabas Church, Sydney

Founded in 1850, the original St Barnabas chapel was the oldest in the inner-city suburb of Glebe. Sadly, the building was destroyed by fire in 2006.

Leading Australian architects Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp were enlisted to design a new church for a modern city, and in 2006, St Barnabas became the city’s first major new church building in 100 years.

The new chapel incorporates elements of the old building within a modern, calm and light space.

The Brief

The parish was looking for chairs to be used within their flexible 600-seat worship space.

They wanted furniture that had a small individual footprint, to allow as many seats as possible within the space. They needed to be comfortable enough that elderly parishioners could sit without discomfort for extended periods of time. It was essential that the chairs compliment the aspirational interiors.

The Furniture Solution

Howe’s 40/4 chairs in ash were chosen for their functionality and design credentials.

Tactile. “Not only is wood beautiful and reflects the light in our interior spaces, but there is also something about it which is inviting. The material is tactile, it makes people want to see and touch it,” says St Barnabas’s. The material also brought warmth to the neutral colour palette.

Small in size, big on comfort. It was critical that the width between the linked chairs was as narrow as possible, to maximise the number of seats.Generous and comfortable without padding, the 40/4 chairs were an ideal solution.

Stackable and robust. Because the space was multipurpose, the chairs needed to be easily stacked. “We looked at a number of chairs across the market, and the way in which the Howe 40/4 stacks so compactly and becomes so easy to manoeuvre in and out of storage was absolutely crucial to us,” says Reverend Paget.

Enduring. Renowned for longevity and with a 10-year conditional warranty, the 40/4 chair has given the community peace of mind.

“Our congregation loves them. Even though they are an unpadded chair, time and time again people comment on the comfort and support they provide, across a wide range of ages.”– Reverend Mark Paget, St Barnabas

HOWE MOVEO TABLE by Justus Kolberg + Erik Simonsen.

The Moveo table series is a handsome, new generation of flip-top table systems. This sturdy, slim table design partners effectively with Howe’s 40/4 stacking chair, and allows for easy operation and handling by just one person.

Moveo features a clever concealed solution for power and data, leaving ample space for a computer, files and other tabletop essentials.

Thanks to an intelligent linked bracket solution, any side of the table can be linked to another to optimise available space. Moveo is designed to keep a low profile, with a choice of “T” or “C” legs to blend into any interior.

Usage: Meeting rooms, training facilities and conference settings.

“The automobile industry often develops innovative technologies that are integrated into a long list of different products and models. We also see Moveo as an example of innovative products built around unique technological platforms. The table has a number of revolutionary functions and design features, which we have developed with optimal functionality, comfort and handling in mind.”– Erik Simonsen, Designer

HOWE TEMPEST TABLE by Justus Kolberg + Erik Simonsen.

The Tempest table is considered the world’s leading flip-top table system in terms of its unique space-saving and manageability qualities. By combining a flip-top mechanism and concealed castors, one person can “wheel-barrow” the tables around swiftly and effortlessly. When not in use, the tables can be nested to optimise space.

A multi-directional linking system allows users to link the Tempest table in any direction. In addition, Tempest offers a modesty panel system and wire management solutions.

Usage: Multi-purpose interiors such as dining, meeting, training and conference facilities.

HOWE’s Tempest table follows the same formula as its legendary Victory table, which was designed to meet the extreme space-saving requirements of the U. S. Navy submarines during World War II. Tempest became the industry benchmark for high quality, sturdy and attractive multi-functional flip-top tables, and remains the mainstay of HOWE’s table sales.
