Introduction

Hello teachers and students from Italy, Germany and Finland. I would like to

talk about some of the humorous music Ireland has to offer. The first

song is called “Joxer goes to Stuttgart”.

Joxer Goes to Stuttgart is a song by Irish folk singer Christy Moore. It is about a fan, named Joxer, who travels to the Irish football team's first major international tournament, Euro 1988, in West Germany.

Background of the song

Joxer...is no ordinary fan! What we can tell from the lyrics

Joxer meets a German girl on his journey.”Joxer met a German's daughter on the banks of the river RhineAnd he told her she'd be welcome

in Ballyfermot anytime”He has never travelled outside of Europe.”'Twas the first time Whacker set his foot

outside of Inchicore”

We can tell by the lyrics that Joxer was quite a drinker.”At the first Fleagh Ceoil in Europe, Joxer passed the flagon roundBut the session it ended when we finished all

the stout”

The main focus of the song is the game that took place in Stuttgart's Neckarstadion against England on the 12 June , a game which Ireland won 1-0, thanks to a sixth-minute goal from Ray Houghton.

It is popular with Irish football fans,

mainly because we beat England!

Background of the song The song also documents the lives of the fans of the team and the impact of the tournament in Germany, and especially the England match. Many fans would have been working class, the adventure was a totally new experience and their first time abroad.

Jumbo Breakfast RollThe next song I’d like to discuss was written by Pat Shortt and it’s called “Jumbo Breakfast Roll”.

The subject of the song is an Irish breakfast roll. It was the best selling song of 2006 in Ireland!

Background to the song ☺

A popular meal for adults to have at the weekend is a breakfast roll.

It is not the most healthy option for breakfast, however it has gained popularity with adults as it is easier than cooking your own food.

It is also commonly known to be consumed when adults are “hungover”

Some of the contents of the breakfast roll:

“Two eggs two rashers two sausage two bacon two puddings one black and white”
