EMERGENCY EVACUATION PROCEDURESIn the event of an emergency, please wait for an announcement for further instructions. Ushers will be available for assistance.

FOOD AND DRINK are not allowed in the Theatre.

SMOKING POLICY According to state law, smoking is NOT allowed within 25 feet of any door, nor in any part of the Theatre.

EMERGENCY NUMBERSIf you need to be reached during a performance, please leave your exact seat number and the House Manager’s number with your service or sitter. In Issaquah (425) 392-1942 x100In Everett (425) 257-6368

BABES IN ARMS Please, no babes in arms in the Theatre. In Issaquah, the Francis J. Gaudette Theatre has comfortable, sound-proof family rooms for families bringing children under four. Subscribers may exchange into the family rooms when a sitter cannot be found. When children are old enough to join the main floor audience, please instruct them in proper theatre behavior. It is helpful to familiarize them with the story and the score in advance.

ACCESSIBILITY Wheelchair seating is available. Please advise your ticket seller when purchasing tickets if you require wheelchair seating.

LISTENING SYSTEM The Theatre is equipped with a listening system for the hard of hearing. Headsets are available on a first-come first-served basis from the House Manager, and are free of charge with a valid ID.

THE SHOW MUST GO ON Whether it rains, sleets, snows or blows, only a power outage or building destruction will prevent a performance from taking place as scheduled.

PATRON CONSIDERATIONS Please arrive on time. Check your tickets for your performance time. Late arrivals are very disruptive to fellow patrons and to the artists onstage. Please give yourself plenty of time to get to the Theatre. Patrons arriving late will not be seated until a suitable pause in the performance at the House Manager’s discretion.

Please turn off all pagers, cellular phones and watch alarms before entering the Theatre. No text messaging is allowed during the performance.

No photography, video or sound recording of any performance is allowed based on royalty and union agreements.

Be aware that talking, humming and tapping feet during a performance is also disruptive to the patrons around you. Before the overture begins, please turn off playbill flashlights and unwrap cough drops. In intimate auditoriums like the Francis J. Gaudette Theatre and the Everett Performing Arts Center, even the actors can hear these seemingly small noises. Please use moderation in applying perfume, cologne or lotion, as many people are allergic to scents.

In consideration of your fellow patrons and the actors, please do not leave the performance during the curtain call.

Who’s Who

Director’s NotesFunny Girl is one of the last of Broadway’s “golden age” of musicals. Opening in 1964 and staring Barbra Streisand as the legendary Fanny Brice, the story chronicles the tumultuous, ill-fated relationship between Fanny and her first husband, notorious bad-boy Nick Arnstein.

At the time of its opening, Arnstein was very much alive, and threatened to sue the production if anything showed him in an unfavorable light. Consequently, the actual events of their relationship became white washed in a somewhat idyllic and completely fictional account.

Fortunately, the heart of Funny Girl relies less on this romance, and more on the force of nature that is the resilient Fanny Brice. Armed with a truckload of Jule Styne’s greatest hits including “People” and “Don’t Rain on My Parade,” the character of Fanny Brice steamrolls across the footlights taking us back to the days of vaudeville and Ziegfeld’s Follies.

Funny Girl is the ultimate backstage musical, sort of a reality TV show of showbiz. From the opening scene as Fanny walks on to an empty stage, to the closing notes of its rousing finale, the audience is given a backstage view of the glamor and the “dramar” that is showbiz.

Ultimately, the weight of Funny Girl is carried on the shoulders of its talented leading lady. Sarah Rose Davis heads an amazing cast who bring the golden age of Broadway back to life on Village Theatre’s stage. Enjoy!

Steve Tomkins, Director

Celebratingith each show seen here at Village Theatre, you are witnessing

the arduous and meticulous results of artisans who put hours

into perfecting their craft. Each show is custom designed from the ground up and we are proud to say that our team of master craftsmen includes some of the best painters, carpenters, seamstresses, and engineers in the region. We will be celebrating these artisans throughout our upcoming 2014-2015 Season playbills and are excited to start by showcasing our incredible scenic artist team, led by Master Scenic Artist Julia Franz.

Funny Girl is Julia’s 100th Mainstage show— and ironically enough, it’s also the very first show she worked on at Village 20 years ago. Her scenic art career began with the 90s television show Northern Exposure where she worked on an expansive variety of projects, from making fake caves to painting complex backdrops. “In my two years with Northern Exposure, I probably got the experience a theatre scenic artist gets in 10 years.” Julia notes of the variety of her projects. Outside of Northern Exposure, Julia was a freelance scenic artist. In 1994, Village hired her to paint the scenery for Funny Girl—an experience that ended up having more negatives than positives. “I was originally told I had two weeks to get the job done, then found out I had to do it in one week.” Julia recalls. “I ended up spending a few nights on stage just to finish it on time.”

Not long after this experience, Jason Townley (Village Theatre’s technical director at the time) called Julia and told her they needed a scenic artist for Babes in Toyland. Julia was already

booked during Jason’s requested time period, but he offered that she could just do the background drops instead of the whole set’s scenery. And with that offer, he insisted she come out and see the new Mainstage building (the current Francis J. Gaudette theatre in Issaquah). The theatre wasn’t finished quite yet—the seats hadn’t even been put in—but it gave Julia something to think about. She agreed to paint the entire Babes in Toyland set and after that show, she became a year round staff member.

The creation space Julia and our scenic artists work in has grown over the years from painting backstage, to a retail space in Issaquah, to our current Technical Studios just down the street from Mainstage. These studios enable the scenic artists to have the space needed to create large drops for shows, as well as the entirety of the show’s scenery. Julia and our three resident scenic artists Jeff Scott, Rachele Wirrick, and our newest scenic artist Jennifer Blazek, do all of the painting, texturing, fabric applications (as long as it applies to scenery), and carving for a show. “Anything that is not handled directly by an actor is generally in our department.” Julia explains. Depending on the show, the scenic team may also include a few freelance scenic artists as well to help with the workload.

So far, Village Theatre has never had a full-page printed drop; each is painted by hand. “We’ve had a few printed items for shows, and they usually stand out like a sore thumb.” Julia says with a laugh. “One of the best compliments I ever received was during Evita where lighting/set designer Tom Sturge told me, ‘With scenic painters like that, why would you ever have drops digitally printed?’”

Interested in a scenic art career? Julia recommends those with interest should try to get into a theatre and work on a few sets before they dive into the profession as a full-time career. “The work of a scenic artist is physically demanding. One month I’ll spend the job on my knees, the next with my arms over my head.” Julia says. “The job is very artistic, but you need to remember that it is a job—a third of it is just labor: sweeping, washing buckets, cleaning up messes.” As with most jobs, it usually takes some time to work up to being a painter who does the more fun projects, and it can be quite challenging at times. But in the end the persistence and hard work is always rewarding; one big reason why Julia loves what she does. “It’s an extremely fulfilling career.” She earnestly says. “There was one show where the curtain lifted and people started applauding—without any cast on stage. It was the set they were applauding for. I said to myself,

‘Yeah, this feels pretty good.’”

ROBB HUNT (Executive Producer) helped found Village Theatre in 1979 and has been involved as producer for the theatre ever since. Robb was an avid performer for

many years with experience as a principal actor and dancer in several Puget Sound theatre companies. With a background in business, Robb was a strong hand as a consultant in the field of Arts Management; several of his clients included The 5th Avenue, the Metropolitan Museum, Seattle Repertory Theatre, Seattle Symphony, The Museum of Flight, The Carnegie, and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Robb is dedicated to commissioning and developing musicals and has been the driving force in the inclusion of new musicals in Village Theatre programming. He has collaborated on the creation of productions such as Eleanor, Next To Normal, The Ark, and Making Tracks. Village Theatre has become an active member of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre and Robb has served on its New Works committee and on the Board of Directors.
