MHS ART TEACHER EMAILS:[email protected]@hvs.org

WELCOME TO DESIGN!This is the prerequisite course preceding all HVS Art Courses. This can be taken in 8th grade or during any student’s high school career. Students will be introduced to the Elements & Principles of Design, creating 2-D & 3-D art and even exploring the advanced level courses.

My name is Tara Johnson and I am excited to be an MHS Mav! I have been teaching

at MHS for 3 years, after transferring from Muir Middle School, with 15 years of service

building the middle school program. I look forward to preparing young artists for the work

world, building on the talent that they were born with,

and the skills that were introduced through prior

education or creative experiences.

In my spare time, I am the Head Coach for

Girls/Boys Snowboard Racing (SBX) as well for Girls

Lacrosse. I also love to wakeboard, mountain bike and

also play hockey! I am married to a teacher in Howell,

Scott, who is a part of our coaching staffs. We have 5

Ducks that entertain the neighborhood! I have loved

the transition to the High School level of art!

HVS Mission...inspiring students and building futures, one student at a time.

This is my personal goal as well. Because parents/guardians are the most important people

in a student’s life, I appreciate all of the support and encouragement provided at home.

Let’s work together so each student SUCCEEDS!

GRADING CRITERIA:First, let’s get something straight. ART

is a skill that can be taught and developed,

not just a talent. Therefore, students will

NEVER be graded on raw talent that they

were born with. In fact, we are all born as

artists, we just forget as we grow older :)

Don’t forget that in order to have

ARTWORK, one must WORK. I will

take the responsibility to provide students

with the knowledge, skills, instruction,

demonstrations, etc. to allow them to be

successful. However, success only occurs

when STUDENTS put forth EFFORT.

Students are responsible for:

CraftsmanshipOriginality, CreativityOverall Aesthetic DesignSpecific Project ExpectationsOwnership (Name on Front)Completion by the due dateClean-Up & Equipment CareUse of Class Time, On Task _____________________________

= SUCCESS

Fundamentals

of Art & Design

will provide an

introduction to

the visual art

experience,

exploring the

elements and principles of Design.

Students will have the opportunity

to work during class but also are

expected to work at home if they are

unable to complete their work in the

classroom.

A digital portfolio with 5-8 works

of art will be submitted as 80% of

the Final Exam @ the end of the

semester. In order to move beyond

Fundamentals of Art & Design and

advance to all other art classes, one

must complete this portfolio & pass

this course. Grades will posted and

updated regularly on Skyward.

DESIGN: MATERIALS & EXPENSES

Tara Johnson

MATERIAL USAGEThe school provides a budget that covers

equipment such as the paper cutter, rulers, triangles, scissors, etc. In order to give students the maximum opportunity to

explore their creativity, the MHS dep-ART-ment would like to offer students the art materials they desire, as long as they prove to

be responsible with their materials. However, because students get to use products up such as paint, clay, paper, pastels, erasers, pencils,

etc. there is a lab fee associated with this course.

In order to provide this opportunity, students are requested to contribute a

$20.00 lab fee (only $1.00 per week). In order to plan accordingly, please turn this lab fee in by the end of the first week of the

semester, stapled to the Contribution Contract. Thanks in advance for your contribution.

DONATIONSFOUND ITEM DONATION:-Paper-Pencils-Colored Pencils-Other drawing & painting supplies.-Leftover int. or ext. latex paint BENEVOLENCE: Contribute above and beyond the suggested donation amount of $20.00 to help other families in need during this economy. DONATE TIME: after school to help with showcases and displays or to clean/organize above & beyond the daily routine!

FINESAny area left unclean or misused materials will result in a fine, appropriate for the offense. Most fines are $1.00Broken equipment will happen “accidentally”. Large item repair or replacement fines are up to the discretion of Mrs. J.These “book” fines must be paid prior to graduation.

REPRESENT & DISPLAYThe MHS dep-ART-ment requests the

student mounts or mats their 2-dimensional work before MHS displays it. This protects the artwork as well as draws attention to it

from the passerby. Students may simply mount onto large

construction paper or pay to have it

professionally matted (required for the Art Show) @ Main Street Art for $10.00 . However, MHS does it for only $5.00!

ALL finished projects are eligible to go on display to represent the talent of the MHS art students. Come check out the showcases, wall displays or digital photo

frames and admire the talent in our school! Beyond this, selections from these displays will be invited to represent the MHS dep-

ART-ment at the SPRING ART SHOW!

Tuesday, May 7th, 2013.
