Part Details Dimensions

GIF++ facility

Located in zone 154 on H4 beam line in EHN1 (building 887)

225 m2

Preparation area

Area for detector preparation directly accessible from control room

83 m2

Services area

Hosts large part of the peripheral infrastructure and services (gas supplies and systems)

At least 24 m2

Bunker Contains 16.65 TBq Cs-137 source (662 keV gammas)

100 m2

Control room

Two separate control rooms for services and users in barracks R-B84 and R-A81 with direct access to the preparation areaDorothea

GIF++ Bunker

Requirement Details Importance

Radiological shielding

Concrete walls and roof at least 80 cm thick Mandatory

Access system SAS that guarantees “unicité de passage” MandatoryRoof Roof that shields the outside against radiation, and allows

ventilation for flow of gas. Possibility to open the roof (opening frequency about once per month).

Very important

False floor False floor made from steel beams and steel plates that reduces the distance between muon beam and floor level by >= 40 cm, offers space for the under floor chamber of the cosmic trigger (shielded by 15 cm of steel, surface level with false floor) and covers the large irradiation zone in the bunker and the preparation zone in front of the large door.

Very important

Bunker conditions

Ventilation system that keeps temperature at 20-24 °C (stability +/- 1 °C) and humidity between 30 and 50%. After an opening of the roof or the large door, stable conditions should be reached again within 12 hours. The installation of detectors has to be coordinated and optimized to decrease the opening frequency.

Very important

Space for electronic equipment close to detectors

Rack space for RPCs available in the entrance chicane or downstream outside the facility

GIF++ Irradiator, source and irradiation zones

Requirement Details Importance

Tests of very large detectors

Very large irradiation zone (4.8 m x 9.2 m). Existence of large bunker door and availability of the overhead crane to move very large detectors into the bunker through the roof.

Mandatory

Tests with muon beam

Muon beam of 100 GeV and 104 muons per spill (core beam size 10 cm x 10 cm) can be used for detector tests in the large irradiation zone and the small irradiation zone

Mandatory

Test of detectors in parallel

Enough space to position detectors in front of one another in large irradiation zone. Second smaller irradiation zone (2.2 m x 2.2 m) 180 degrees opposite that can be used in parallel. In total enough space for up to 6 groups to test detectors in parallel.

Mandatory

Easy installation of detectors

Use of CERN made trolleys to move detectors into the bunker. Three cable channels under the false floor in the large irradiation zone. Cable trays, preinstalled common cables and patch panels on both sides of the bunker.

Very important

Uniform field Uniform field (fluence of non-scattered gammas) in both irradiation zones

Mandatory

Attenuated field

System of movable lead attenuators for large irradiation zone that allows attenuation factors between 1 and 100000 in several steps

Mandatory

Lateral irradiator movement

System that allows the manual lateral movement of the irradiator and the lead filters towards the muon beam during GIF++ muon beam time. When GIF++ runs with gammas only, the position of the irradiator is such that the source axis is in the middle of the cosmic trigger floor chamber

Very important
