• Project included:

• Implementing AtoM

• Additional functionality (e.g. user registration, reports) was also included in the build

• Migration of the data from the BOS/AEON system to AtoM

• Enhancements for the implementation of the Australian Series System

• Project included:

• Implementing AtoM

• Skinning the system to match UTas livery

• Partnering with Recordkeeping Innovation to provide Archival Management support

• Providing ongoing technical support for the system

ARCHIVESSt Aloysius’ College

• Has ~30,000 objects, ~8,500 people or organisations, ~200 subjects, ~20,000 images (around 7GB storage)

ARCHIVESSt Aloysius’ College

• Project included:

• Themeing AtoM to match the St Aloysius branding

• Migration to our hosting environment off their systems

• Has to be a lower ongoing cost for the systems in order to meet the budgets for the smaller institution

• Using virtual servers, minimising specifications

• Pre-purchasing run time to achieve savings

ARCHIVESAustralian Series System

• Has been “out” for a while

• At least two different ways of implementing it within AtoM (ANU,SROWA “flavours”)

• Reviewing the implementations of the Series System and how can we move this forward?

Page 17: Fun with Archives (Victorian Edition)

ARCHIVESAustralian Series System

• To implement the Australian Series System at SROWA, we created three new plugins:

• Archival Descriptions – via a modification of the International Standard Archival Description plugin

• Agencies/Actors – via a modification of the International Standard Archival Authority Record plugin

• A new Accessions plugin.

Page 18: Fun with Archives (Victorian Edition)

ARCHIVESAustralian Series System

• RKI (Barbara Reed) is currently reviewing bothimplementations to determine a “best practice” way forward

• Report being prepared for review by the community – still working out how best to do this, already have interest

• Once reviewed, and agreed upon we will then look at how to make these changes in the software

ARCHIVESAtoM Users Australasia

• Staff from SROWA have established an “AtoM users Australasia” Google Group – stillin it’s infancy…

ARCHIVESIntroduction

• A quick overview of Archivematica and digital preservation

• Our offerings in terms of hosting, support, etc

Page 21: Fun with Archives (Victorian Edition)

ARCHIVESArchivematica

• Digital preservation system

Page 22: Fun with Archives (Victorian Edition)

ARCHIVESArchivematica

Page 23: Fun with Archives (Victorian Edition)

ARCHIVESDigital Preservation

• Biggest learnings:

• Technical implementations are the easy part for Archivematica

• Contains a range of Microservices you need to decide what to do with – e.g.

• formats for DIPs, • formats for AIPs, • where to store the DIPs, AIPs• what sort of other checks (e.g. fixity) do you

need to run

Page 24: Fun with Archives (Victorian Edition)

ARCHIVESDigital Preservation

• Data storage!

Page 25: Fun with Archives (Victorian Edition)

ARCHIVESBefore you start!

• Strongly suggest you undertake a planning exercise before starting, and have a Road Map

• Examples of things to consider:• Do you have a current system?• Are you moving to a new platform? Which one?• Do you have to migrate data?• How big a change process is it for the staff using

it?• …

Page 26: Fun with Archives (Victorian Edition)

ARCHIVESBefore you start!

• Depending on your situationyou may not have the ability (or budget) to do aroad mapping exercise

• Moving could be solely a ‘safety’ option

• Need to consider the longer term implications of this approach

• Stage the project as best you can

Page 27: Fun with Archives (Victorian Edition)

ARCHIVESWays forward

• Multiple ways forward

• Move existing system,• Implement a new system (no existing data), or• Migrate to a new system.

St AloysiusMove existing

UTasNew system

Page 28: Fun with Archives (Victorian Edition)

ARCHIVESHosted offerings

• All of these three platforms are relatively “lightweight” in terms of their hosting solutions, so require “less”

• The biggest consideration for Archivematica is storage for the DIPs and AIPs, but the system is also quite “light”
