Greetings from the Director

Providing quality programming and services, in a safe, aesthetically pleasing parks and recreation system, is the commitment we make every day to residents of Wentzville.

We take great pride in providing services that enhance quality of life and make our community a better place to live.

We are very excited to announce that Heartland Park is officially open! Heartland Park, which is located at 100 W.M. Dierberg Dr., features two synthetic turf fields, two grass fields, a walking trail, a boardwalk over portions of the lake, and restrooms. Future park plans for Phase 2 include a concession stand, playground and an outdoor nature learning area. The park will host soccer tournaments, flag football and lacrosse games, youth cricket clinics, soccer fest events and more. We’re excited to offer these new outdoor amenities to the Wentzville community!

City staff is currently working on the new Peruque Valley Park baseball/softball complex. This project has been bid as a series of projects. The first phase will bring off-site utilities (water and sewer) to the park, while the second phase relates to grading the site and installing some of the on-site utilities. There are several other phases involving constructing the parking lots and structures on the site, installing landscaping and ball-field related infrastructure, and maintenance-related facilities. We expect this project to near completion by the end of 2015, with the official opening occurring in 2016.

As I mentioned in the last brochure, the Parks and Recreation Department is partnering with PROS Consulting to complete a Citywide master planning process. Public input has been sought to provide feedback about the facilities and amenities our residents want and need. As a part of this process, we will be hosting a series of public forums, workshops and focus-group interviews. We will also conduct a statistically valid needs-assessment survey and will solicit your feedback throughout the process via our website. To stay abreast of the process, or to offer your input, please frequently check the “quick links” on our website at http://bit.ly/wentzville_parks. And, don’t forget to follow us on Facebook and Twitter. As you can see, our parks and recreation system is thriving ― this is a direct reflection of the support of our Mayor and Board of Aldermen. Our elected officials understand that our community center is a neighborhood’s living room and our parks are the community’s backyard. They are places where people come together to meet one another and build community.

My promise to you is that ― as we move into a new budget year ― we will do everything we can to offer outstanding programs/special events at our community/aquatic centers and to ensure that we have the cleanest, greenest and safest parks in the county.

Take the opportunity to get outdoors and visit one of our parks, experience one of our special events, visit the community center, and participate in a recreational class or program. As always, our professional staff welcomes your comments, questions or concerns. You can reach our office at (636) 332-9236 or email us at [email protected].

Thank you for supporting Wentzville Parks and Recreation! Mike LuecK, Director

Memorial Tree and Bench ProgramThe City of Wentzville Parks and Recreation Department offers community members the opportunity to honor loved ones within our park system. Legacy trees and memorial benches provide a lasting way to pay tribute to a loved one or friend. You may also provide an unspecified donation to be used for park and recreation purposes. Park naming opportunities are also available. For further information, contact Linda Ziolko at (636) 639-2082 or [email protected].

We need your help! Vandalism in your park system is a serious, unnecessary and costly problem. Each year, the City spends thousands of tax dollars to remove graffiti and repair damage done by vandals. We would much rather use your funding to enhance and beautify the parks!

If you have a cell phone with you or live adjacent to a park, you can help us out with a new program called “PARK WATCH.” If you see anyone acting suspicious, damaging property, driving on the grass or defacing playground equipment, PLEASE call the Wentzville Police Department at (636) 327-5105 and report what you see. THANK YOU!

WE P.L.A.Y. Scholarship (Wentzville Residents Only)The WE P.L.A.Y. Scholarship program (or WEntzville Providing Leisure Assistance for Youth) is designed to provide youth access to the recreation and leisure activities of their choice ― regardless of their ability to pay. Please call the Parks and Recreation Department (636) 332-9236 for more information.

• Who is eligible? City of Wentzville residents who are experiencing financial difficulty or who are in a unique hardship situation may apply.

• How does the program work? Children residing within the city limits and who qualify through the established guidelines of free lunch program utilized by the Wentzville and Fort Zumwalt school districts are eligible to apply. Children who do not receive the reduced or free lunch program may still qualify and are encouraged to apply if assistance is needed. Children ages 17 and under are eligible to receive one program scholarship per brochure with a maximum of three per year.

Share Your Talent! The Wentzville Parks and Recreation office is always looking for talented people to hold classes and share their talent

with the community! Please call the Progress Park office, at (636) 332-9236, if you are interested in sharing your talents.

Bring Conservation HomeCoordinated by the St. Louis Audubon Society, Bring Conservation Home is an urban land habitat restoration assistance and certification program. The program addresses native and non-native invasive plants, water conservation and stewardship practices for the benefit of birds, butterflies, other animals and people. For a small fee, trained habitat advisors visit your landscape, perform an assessment and consultation, and provide a written report with a menu of recommendations on how to restore nature habitat value to your landscape. Landscaping with native plants to restore habitat is essential for our native birds, butterflies and each other. Additional benefits include:

A modest program fee of $25 (for Audubon and partner members) will be payable at the time of the initial site visit. The City of Wentzville is a partner. The fee includes one initial site assessment and consultation visit, plus one optional follow-up certification visit. To invite us to help you create exciting and attractive habitat for birds and butterflies, complete the online application online at www.stlouisaudubon.org.

• Lower water bill — natives need little/no watering• Lower electric bill — shade from native trees• Better water quality for all by less storm runoff• Save more time and money by mowing less grass• Reduction in greenhouse gas emissions

• Less pesticide and herbicide use due to the biologically diverse landscape

• Higher property value from an attractive landscape• Fun and inspirational encounters with nature
