A vivid childhood memory is: My �rst ride on a high speed ferry when I was 10. Myself and a mate stood on deck loving it while

the rest of the class were down below throwing up! Best advice received: ‘The best part of life is always the people

My secret skill is: I make a mean bolognaise... and chocolate sauce!

IN 2011 MOTUTAPU AND RANGITOTO ISLANDS WERE DECLARED PEST-FREE wildlife sanctuaries after a twenty-year pest eradication programme. The massive $3million project is the most complex island pest eradication ever attempted anywhere in the world according to the Department of Conservation.

It’s being carried out to rid Rangitoto and Motutapu of animal pests including mice, feral cats, hedgehogs and rabbits that feed on birds and insects. Possums and wallabies were successfully wiped out in a campaign in the 1990s. Native birdlife, vital plant life and forest will �ourish as a result.

Already breeding pairs of Takahe have been relocated to the islands and a further 30 species of threatened native wildlife are expected to be released onto the islands in the future. These include kiwi, hihi or stitchbird, tuatara and several species of native reptile. Covering a combined landbase of 3800 hectares, Rangitoto and Motutapu Islands are well on the way to becoming a valuable world-class conservation sanctuary.

Plans include introducing Tuatara to the Island.

The inquisitive, �ightless Takahe is settling in.

During my mom’s visit we went out to Waiheke Island, a well known wine and olive oil region, so my mom and I signed ourselves up for a half day wine tour! We took a 40 minute ferry ride, which was fun all in itself, and met our tour

guide at the Waiheke port. We hopped on the bus and o� we went! This was tour guide Brian, he was the best! Seriously, if anyone is going to Waiheke and planning a wine tour I recommend this guy; full of information about the island, super friendlyand knew how to time the tour to avoid the rain! First stop, Mudbrick Vineyard...gorgeous! It had beautiful gardens and overlooked the Hauraki Gulf. After tasting several di�erent wines and exploring the gardens we headed to vineyard number two, The Goldie Room... cute and charming, along with great views. Something cool about The Goldie Room: 10 years ago they donated some of their property to University of Auckland. Students who are studying Wine Making can go and study there, and stay while doing an internship. I’ve never even heard of wine making as a Major! Where was that at UNI?? Somehow I don’t think Dan or Sue would approve..Maybe they would? Anyways, after a few nibbles we headed to the third and �nal stop, Te Whau. Te Whau was a very modern and sleek vineyard and had great views of the island. After a few samples and a quick look around it was time to say good bye to our friend Brian. What a great day!
