On 25 & 26 August, the bOing! International Family Festival will be celebrating its 5th birthday in style, with companies travelling from Australia, France, Denmark, Spain and across the UK to perform in Canterbury for an anticipated 15,000 people.

Highlights for 2018 include sitting in hammocks to enjoy the beautiful Androcles and the Lion by Teatret Gruppe 38 from Denmark; Spanish company Aracaladanza return to Gulbenkian with their stunning show Constellations; and Dyptik from France will be performing their dynamic hip hop infused D-Construction.

bOing! has performances for the very small, with La Petita’s lovely Beatles for Babies, and for older children, such as Efren Pamilacan Jr from Melbourne and his powerful hip hop, projection performance 9DIMES.

bOing! will once again welcome one of the luminaria created by Architects of Air, plus there will be lively outdoor performances include a ‘Campervan of Love’, Bill & Bobby dancing in a bath, bangra drumming and the Bollywood Brass band, plus crazy hairdressers from Barcelona.

Workshops are an important part of bOing! and visitors to the festival in 2018 will have the chance to turn their hand to animation, puppetry, bangra drumming, crime scene investigations and boat-hat making.

On Friday 24 August, bOing! will hit the streets of Canterbury with Cohesion Plus performing bangra, plus the Bollywood Brass Band and a hip hop street battle all the way from Australia.

President’s Letter CAC does what is on the lid of the metaphorical tin. It is an advisory, deliberative or administrative body of volunteers, formally constituted meeting regularly, encouraging and promulgating the multifarious artistic activities of the inhabitants of this great city and district. It does so in response to a continual outpouring of artistic endeavour and creation in every medium by individuals, collectives, groups, clubs and societies. Canterbury hits above its weight in artistic engagement, each and every day of the year associated with an exhibition, concert, drama, recital, reading or dance. Canterbury and District is creatively vibrant and CAC channels the surging flow ensuring support and encouragement for our many registered groups and societies. Small grants, scholarships and publicity follow such engagement underpinned by financial support from local Education and Church establishments and the generosity of our sponsors Stephen and Ann Gerlis, the Nevill Arts Trust and others.

At times of uncertainty there is something reassuring about the truths that can be discovered in artistic endeavour whether in reinterpreting the past or commenting on the present. The Arts act as firm foundations when other elements of our landscape rock and sway in the geopolitical headwinds that batter our shores. Economic, political and social changes impact on our communities who can find solace if not complete solutions in the creative and recreative expressions of fellow beings. CAC is the conduit for such ideas, interpretations, opposing or confirming views and opinions.

I thank the committee for its diligence and hard work and look forward to another year of dynamic artistic engagement in Canterbury and District.

Professor Grenville Hancox MBE

Josephine Harvatt “I had a very busy year. I made over 70 pieces of work including a series of 50 paintings for my GIVE THEM SHELTER exhibition in aid of the homeless, which Canterbury Arts Council helped to publicise. To date I have made £1750 for charity from this self initiated project.”

In the summer I helped create the “Flogging a Dead Horse” public artwork in Herne Bay and participated in the Oyster Festival Art Trail at Whitstable Museum. I was shortlisted for the Jon Bird Art Prize and had other work exhibited at the Oxo Tower Gallery in London and Lovely’s Gallery in Margate. I was also guest artist at the Alexander Centre in Faversham from January onwards”

Folk in the Barn 2017 saw 29 concerts over ten lovely venues. 12 of those concerts were with artists new to us, ranging from double Grammy winner Sarah Jarosz to Folk legends Steeleye Span. Great also to work with some CCCU music students and offer them opening spots. A new venue for us was the characterful Fitzwalter Room at Goodnestone Park, perfect for intimate concerts. Looking forward to our 15th anniversary Festival in 2018.

Canterbury Music Club Canterbury Music Club has enjoyed another year of great chamber music concerts, with a wide variety of instruments and musical styles, all arranged by concert secretary Grenville Hancox.

Performers ranged from the unusual combination of a violin duo, to a trio featuring flute, oboe and piano, an accordionist and a solo piano recital.

Up and coming players were featured alongside established performers who played to appreciative audiences, including the Lord Mayor of Canterbury.

Canterbury Ceramic and Antique Circle We have enjoyed a packed and varied programme this last year. Not only have we had as visiting speakers Nick Panes on the amazing Mr Champion- a Cheshire cat of the porcelain trade in the 18th century! Charles Dawson on Parian ware - a very domestic production , and Clare Durham from Woolley and Wallis on what really drives the market, but also Michael Signy on repairs and rivets, and the distinguished sinologist Rose Kerr on Chinese Porcelain Decoration. Moreover we had the privilege of visiting a very important local collection, and of travelling up to the Wallace Collection for a fascinating day of guided talks by the experts! A year well spent! Come and join us!!.

Two talks happened, one on mediaeval ideas about the signifiacence of Gothic Cathedrals with Dr. Jeffrey Miller, of Cambridge University and the other on works of Aldhelm, a pupil of Theodore and Hadrian, with Sherborne authority, Katherine Barker. Our Festival concert was another sell-out. Chant for Bishops and Abbots was alternated with poetry and readings about Theodore and Hadrian. In November, some of us sang a London lunchtime concert in the City Church of St. Lawrence Jewry with organist Catherine Ennis, ‘Chant for the Canterbury Saints’.

SaveAs Writers Group ‘SaveAs Writers had a successful year with one of the two highlights being the ‘Love & Freindship’ international creative writing competition it ran to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death.

http://saveaswriters.co.uk/competitions.html

We also held two very successful days of creative writing workshops as part of the Canterbury Festival.

Individually it was a very rewarding year with many members winning prizes and having work published. A special mention to Gary Studley who finished runner – up in

the 2017 Canterbury Festival Poet of the Year competition.’

This year was yet another winner for all involved at KYT. We have seen so many wonderful new students who are discovering our unique performing arts training and relishing the opportunities we provide them: from acting classes to stage and screen performances from masterclasses to professional engagements. Each new term brought fresh and exciting challenges for the students. As always, they accepted the tasks and grew with confidence on their journey. The Lindley Players The Playhouse Theatre Whitstable’s resident Lindley Players enjoyed a bumper year of drama starting with their award-winning productions of A Tale of Two Cities and Boeing Boeing.

These were followed by the colourful Jack the Ripper the Musical in July and historical drama The Lion in Winter in September.

October saw the Rise and Fall of Little Voice followed by a showcase of our young talent in the Lindley Youth Theatre’s Double Bill Totally Over You and Girls like That. We rounded off 2017 with Immaculate.

2018 commenced with our pantomime Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood and we concluded the year with The Merchant of Venice.

Whitstable Choral Society Whitstable Choral Society, under the leadership of Dr David Flood, has gone from strength to strength over the last twelve months. We have attracted a number of new members to this highly regarded Choral Society. We have staged three very successful concerts. In summer 2017 we performed the ever popular Haydn Creation in the Cathedral. This was followed in the autumn by a complete change of style when we performed the Requiem by Bob Chilcott and Beethoven’s Mass in C. After our annual carol concert in December the final concert

for the period was the lesser known but very beautiful Stabat Mater by Haydn and the much loved Requiem by Faure.

Canterbury Three Cities Association Much of last year was dominated by our international photographic exhibition, held at venues in Herne Bay and Folkestone. We showed over 70 photographs, depicting life and scenery in Bloomington-Normal, Vladimir and Canterbury. Judging by the comments in our visitors’ book, the exhibitions were much appreciated. Members also enjoyed several talks, including on US Presidential Inaugurations and Anna Karenina, a summer garden party, and a dinner and talk on American Thanksgiving Day.

The Really Promising Company

This year, the company reached it’s tenth anniversary! We celebrated with an evening of laughter, food and songs from our productions over the decade; enjoyed by old and new alike.

Furthermore, we returned to the Marlowe Theatre, where it all started. This time enthusiastic amateurs, still using professional direction, performed Canterbury Belles, a home grown, original murder mystery

musical, in the intimate space of the Studio. Tickets sold well, the audience enjoyed the drama and the company felt we’d come home!

Whatever next? Well…..our recent stagecraft workshop is just the beginning of the next adventure…..What do you know about Emma Hamilton?

The Busch Piano Trio gave a wonderful performance including Schubert’s Trio no.1 and the Aurora Trio’s combination of flute,

harp and viola offered us a very different and captivating soundscape.

The Maggini Quartet returned, thrilling us with works by Mozart, Bax and Schubert.

The season will conclude with a visit from Trevor Pinnock and friends (April), and guitar and violin soloists (May).
