Full membership of Accounting Technicians Ireland allows you to join a professionalaccounting body that will assist and support your career development.

Once you pass your exams and obtain two years relevant work experience, you areeligible to become a Full member and to use the professional letters MIATI.

MIATI stands for Member of the Institute of Accounting Technicians in Ireland. It is a guarantee to employers of your professional standards and abilities. It tells them that you are fully qualified and have the relevant “on-the-job” skills to be anAccounting Technician.

Once you gain your work experience, you can proceed straight to Full membership.You do not have to become an Affiliate member first. Affiliate membership is an interim class of membership that allows you to maintain your links with AccountingTechnicians Ireland while you work towards your work experience.

(If you haveonly completed the study element of ourqualification you are not permitted to usethese letters).

Exemptions for further studyIf you are considering further accountingstudies, we can advise you on the variousexemptions that are available. All theprofessional accounting bodies recognisethe Accounting Technicians Irelandqualification and offer substantialexemptions to our members. Theseinclude bodies such as CharteredAccountants Ireland, ACCA, CIMA, and CPA, among others.

To become a Full member, you must have passed all your exams andcompleted at least two years relevantwork experience within an accounting or finance environment.

To apply for Full membership please complete a Record of Work Experience form (which should be verified by a mentor) and send it with an Application for Membership form. Both forms are available on our website and should be submitted with an assessment fee of€200/£150.

We accept applications for Full membership three times a year. The first round of applications takes place in Spring and then there are two further rounds each Autumn. Please see our website for the specific application dates that apply.

Once you have satisfied all the entrycriteria, you will be invited to become a Full member and attend a graduation.

What is required for my workexperience?Work experience requirements are basedon two years full-time employment (orthe equivalent part-time) and can begained at any time. If you have relevantwork experience from a previous job, thiscan count towards your two years.Accounting Technicians Ireland will alsorecognise any relevant experienceobtained while you are studying or afteryou have completed your exams.

All of your experience has to be signedoff by a mentor who can verify that youhave achieved all of the associatedlearning outcomes. To begin achievingyour work experience, you will need to:

• find a workplace mentor (this can beyour line manager, employer or aqualified accountant)

• gain two years experience in anaccounting or finance related role(s)

• record your progress using the Recordof Work Experience form and havethis verified by your mentor

• submit your Record of WorkExperience to Accounting TechniciansIreland.

How do I become a Full member?

What areas should I have experience in?Accounting Technicians Ireland has aflexible approach in reviewing theprecise experience that you need to gain,given the wide variety of AccountingTechnician roles. You are encouraged togain experience in areas like:

• Accounting systems management(e.g.TAS/Sage)

• Budgeting• Cash management• Computer systems• Costing• Credit control• Management accounting• Payroll administration• Preparation of accounts• Purchases accounting• Quality control• Sales accounting• Stock control• Tax returns

Your mentor will be able to help you plan your work experience effectively,and Accounting Technicians Ireland willbe able to assist with any queries youmay have.

There is no time limit for you to apply for Full membership - you can submit an application whenever you are ready. We accept applications for Full membership three times a year. The specific application dates are available on our website.

What if I am still trying to gain workexperience?If you are still trying to gain your twoyears work experience, we suggest youstart recording any experience you havealready gained in your Record of WorkExperience form. This will speed up any future application you make for Full membership and may avoid the need to approach former employers at a later date.

If you are not sure whether the workexperience you have is appropriate,please contact our Member Servicesdepartment and we would be glad todiscuss it with you.

Can I stay on as an Affiliate member?Yes, if you are not ready yet to apply forFull membership you can remain as anAffiliate member. This is easy to do –simply renew your annual subscriptionwhen it becomes due. This allows you to maintain your links with AccountingTechnicians Ireland while you worktowards your work experiencerequirements.

As an Affiliate member, you can avail ofservices that previously were notavailable to you as a student. Our websitehas information on the wide range ofbenefits that are available to Affiliatemembers. Please note that Affiliates arestill prohibited from using theprofessional letters MIATI as this isreserved solely for Full members.

What if I am not ready to apply yet?

Having completed your AccountingTechnicians Ireland exams, you maydecide to continue studying with some of the other professional accounting and taxation bodies.

Becoming a Full member will supportyou during the next stage of yourprofessional training. You will be able toenjoy the benefits of belonging to aprofessional body immediately, withouthaving to wait a few more years until youcomplete your studies. You have earnedthe right to use your professional lettersnow so why put it off any longer.

Furthermore, once you complete yourtraining and become a professionalaccountant, we will give you an annualdiscount of 50% on your membershipsubscription fee.

What if I am continuing my studies?

Like Students and Affiliate members, Full members pay an annual membershipsubscription. Similar to your previous subscription fee, this is payable each November and should be renewed annually to maintain your professional membership and benefits.

Can I spread the cost of membership over the year?Yes, Accounting Technicians Ireland offers a direct debit facility to members. This allows you to spread the cost of your subscription over a number of instalments during the course of the year.
