By respecting the rules of the marketplace and, following a long romance, today he is prepa- ring for its marriage to the cousin from Brescia ASM, thereby creating an energy giant in North Italy. Giuliano Zuccoli “The transaction with ASM Brescia has been a com- plex and difficult one, mainly be- cause negotiations had involved two important shareholders like the Milan Municipality and that of Brescia who both have the same amount of shares in their compa- nies. The problem was that of maintaining an essential balance, but at the same time avoiding sta- lemates. As they are publicly ow- ned shareholders, I cannot hide that there was also the problem of an echo-phenomenon. Still, in the end, we found acceptable solutions. L Why a dual governance?GZ “I believe that dual governanceis the best solution. The dual regimemodel permits the company to suc-cessfully proceed with its growthtrends without directly conditioningeffectiveness.”L What is your future strategy?GZ “With this merger we have rea-ched an optimum size to competewith the main European players. Noless important is our share in theSwiss Atel. Still, we will try not toneglect useful alliances within ournational territory, for example withAgam Monza, Acsm Como, Enìaand the utility companies from theTrentine area.”L With the merger, what are theworkers’ prospects?GZ “For what regards employment,our employees do not have toworry. In fact, new opportunitieswill become available and we will

be creating new job opportunities.”L What is the name of the newcompany?GZ “We still have not decided. Itwould be great to have a contestfor suggestions made by the citi-zens of both cities. The best onewins!”L Speaking of energy conserva-tion, what is AEM’s approach?GZ “Improving the efficiency of allour plants with important invest-ments. Still we believe that trueenergy conservation is that whicheach person can make if he is ableto understand that there is nothingmore virtuous than that comingfrom small gestures and daily ha-bits. To stimulate this kind of vir-tuous behaviour, the AEM energycompany has distributed for sometime an “Energy Conservation Kit”containing water flow reductionvalves and low-consumption lamp

bulbs that allow for good energysavings. Our goal is to reach all fa-milies in Milan.”L What is AEM’s position on theKyoto protocol on reducinggreenhouse gas?GZ “AEM carries out a fundamentalrole in reducing the emission ofCO2 gas. What is important is theagreement signed by the Milan Mu-nicipality and AEM that provides forthe realisation of five co-generationpower plants that exploit the “heatpump” technology and will serveenormous areas with remote-con-trolled heating. This interventionwill bring, on its own, a reductionof 8% of the CO2 produced in Mi-lan in the residential sector. Thanksalso to other interventions, develo-ped mainly in the Valtellina area ofItaly, up to now a reduction of CO2emissions has been reached equalto 600,000 tons.”

coli has been the General Directorof Falk Nastri and Sondel, where healso was Managing Director. He wasPresident of TRANSIDER, ECOSESTOand ITLA. In December 1996, he be-came AEM’s Director, in 1997 hewas nominated Managing Directorand, since 1999, he has been Presi-dent and Managing Director of thesame AEM. Alla fine però abbiamo trovatosoluzioni accettabili. Devo ringrazia-re perciò il nostro Sindaco LetiziaMoratti, per il suo trascinante impe-

AEM’s production of electric energyis assured by seven hydroelec-

tric facilities with an aggregate installed po-wer of 764 MW, three reservoirs with a ca-pacity of over 180 million cubic meters ofwater and one of the most innovative ther-moelectric power plants in Europe with aninstalled power of over 1000 MW. In theMilan metropolitan area, there are also pre-sent two co-generation power plants and11 facilities for the production of heat distri-buted through remote-controlled heatingnetworks. AEM will make Milan the capitalof clean energy with an innovative projectthat produces heat through the use ofgroundwater.

La produzione di energia elettri-ca di AEM è assicurata da sette

impianti idroelettrici con una potenza in-stallata complessiva di 764 MW, tre bacinicon una capacità di oltre 180 milioni dim^3 di acqua ed una centrale termoelettri-ca tra le più innovative in Europa, con unapotenza installata di oltre 1000 MW. Nel-l’area metropolitana milanese sono presen-ti inoltre due centrali di cogenerazione e 11impianti per la produzione di calore distri-buito mediante reti di teleriscaldamento.AEM farà di Milano la capitale dell’energiapulita con un progetto innovativo che pro-duce calore mediante l’utilizzo di acqua difalda.
