Components Times, February 2010

Richard Lee, FAE Assistant manager of Fujitsu Microelectronics Pacific Asia Ltd Taiwan Branch, took an interview withComponents Times, sharing his views on trends of 32-bit MCU.

English Version:

Introducing Embedded MCU, Fujitsu Focus In-Vehicle Communication Network

Richard Lee, FAE Assistant manager of Fujitsu Microelectronics Pacific Asia Ltd Taiwan Branch

In order to break the limitation of the design cost and sales price, the market generally anticipates that the 32-bitmicrocontroller will show the expected growth breaking force. Especially for the in-vehicle communication networkapplication in automobile electronics, 32 bit MCU also finds the platform to show its advantages.

The automobile electronics industry is developing towards the three themes including safety, comfortable andenvironment friendly. These three themes were independently before, but they have become the co-existing architecturenow. In order to improve the efficient of mutual aid, in-vehicle communication network is born. Therefore, the currentautomobile electronics feature the high integrated system, not just for hardware, but the software integration is alsoincluded. The manufactures for the related controller must provide various software support services under cooperationwith software technique center, from the basic IC driver program to customized system integration design. Take theFujitsu Electronic as an example, it is developing towards Fab-lite mode and consists the whole process from theregulation making, circuit design, manufacture, packing and text.

Richard Lee, FAE Assistant manager of Fujitsu Microelectronics Pacific Asia Ltd Taiwan Branch pointed, the actioncommunication, automobile electronics, advanced image processing and high speed computing are four main businessindustry of Fujitsu. For automobile electronics, the core developing business is high reliability in-vehicle communicationnetwork and 3D image showing. Mr Lee pointed that in-vehicle is a high accurate, complex as well as advanced system. Therefore, as early as beginning the design of the 32-bit MCU for in-vehicle communication network, Fujitsu has alreadyintroduced the concept of embedded system. Take Fujitsu's MB91460 series as an example, it has provided thedeveloping platform suitable for automobile open system software architecture standard AUTOSAR, which integrating thedriver that can improve the code's rewriting rate and the efficiency of in-vehicle software, the function of integratedin-vehicle network CAN, LIN and FlexRay as well as the work software, and RTE supporting the AUTOSAR architecture. Therefore, the customers are able to focus the development on application which will help to reduce the productdevelopment and verify.

Therefore, the concepts under the in-vehicle communication network, including the demanding MCU design for bodyelectronics, chassis safety, information, force control, are all needed to be integrated into the in-vehicle communicationnetwork. For example, Fujitsu's MB91460 series for the applications in various industries, 15 MCUs have beendeveloped at present fro 64 pins to 208 pins, and it has integrated various in-vehicle communication network CAN, LIN,FlexRay, MediaLB, IDB1394 into a single MCU.

For the developing project on the whole MCU, the CPU design team of Fujitsu has developed the MCU product with 8 bit,16 bit, 32 bit and multi-core architecture. Mr. Li future noted that, there are two MCU business modes. The first mode ismarket directing: the MCU products have been investigated by the department of market strategy, and then the marketarea has been selected, finally the MCU specification have been selected. For example, what kind of MUC architecturemust be had for the MCU under application? What about the RAM size and ROM size? What IP need to be integrated? How about the pin design? The second mode is customized MCU, for which the MCU specification were brought by thecustomer, and then Fujitsu provides the customized MCU design solutions with the integration of the internal sources. When talking about the direction of CUP architecture in the new generation MCU, Mr. Li thought that many softwaretechniques are based on ARM Cortex-M series in current market. Fujitsu also introduces the AMR Cortex-M based CPUin order to efficiently take use of the user resources, which can make the customer manager shorten the productdevelopment time and reduce the customer's and Fujitsu's software development cost.

Bedded industry this year, Mr. Lee takes the positive attitude. The application prospect of the 32 bit MCU is very board. The industry and office automobile are widely used, the cost of the electronics for the whole vehicle largely increased. The emerging market for smart information home appliance, the net termination, hybrid power and electronic car will alsobring the new break of 32-bit MCU. However, low price 32 bit MCU will not replace the existed 8 bit MCU market, because the 32 bit MCU also limited by cost and power in current stage. Besides, the development environment toolsand user habit will also need some time to improve.

Rate of Pre-installed In-vehicle Entertainment Systems Will Significantly Increase This Year

Issue time: April 1st, 2010Written by Wang Yu, Deputy General Manager of Fujitsu Microelectronics (Shanghai) Co Ltd

Infotainment system is the main development direction of vehicle electronics in the next few years, because as more andmore electronic systems and in-vehicle network technologies are being used, more and more information about therunning status is needed to be provided to the drivers in order to improve the car's driving safety factor. Meanwhile, asthe demand for driving comfort and entertainment performance increase, especially the popular using of car navigationsystem, it demands the manufactures for automotive electronics to increase their investment to the development ofin-vehicle infotainment systems. With the popularization of in-vehicle multimedia network bus MOST/IDB1394, the carentertainment system has been shifted from the concept to the practical application. Therefore, we believe that the rateof pre-installed car entertainment system will increase significantly.

It forecasts that the production of the vehicle entertainment system will increase next year, and it will become thedeveloping trend of the domestic automotive electronics. At present, the major electronics manufactures are focus ondeveloping the next generation of automotive electronic centralized display system, car navigation systems and carentertainment systems, part of which will be provided to the market the second half of this year and the first half of nextyear.

System cost is still constrained the development of infotainment system in the automotive electronics market. As thefunctions of Infotainment system become more and complex, it requires stronger semiconductors and advanced softwarecontrol, which makes the system face cost pressure. As the competition of the vehicle retail market increasingly serious, the car manufactures have stringent control to the cost, and the complex control system both bring a test to systemstability. It requires the engineers must choose the stable and mature solutions when developing such control system, and make comprehensive system test and verify. These issues became the main obstacles to the market of pre-installedinfotainment system.

For the hardware platform, ARM-Base processor might become the mainstream in market for the following reason: 1) Themajor semiconductor suppliers are committed to the development of microprocessor with ARM core, either low-end orhigh-end. 2) There are more and more engineers familiar with the ARM microprocessor, and there are also more andmore development resources and low cost development environment and tools. 3) The experience of the application of

ARM microprocessors in automotive electronic is continually increasing and the quality becomes more and more stable, which help the ARM microprocessor become the mainstream in market.

Wang Yu, Deputy General Manager of Fujitsu Microelectronics (Shanghai) Co Ltd

According to this market trend, Fujitsu Semiconductor also increases the investment on ARM-based microprocessorsand system-chip development. It is expected in the coming years, we will launch a series of ARM-based microprocessorsand SoC chip integrated with graphics controller to meet the growing demand in this market.

For vehicle multimedia, WinCE currently is mainly used in car navigation systems. We are also optimistic about thefuture prospects of Linux, mainly because of in its open and free systems and numerous network resources. At present,Fujitsu Semiconductor has been developing in vehicle entertainment system based on the Linux system, the main controlchip of which is the ones that based on Fujitsu Microelectronics latest generation of ARM-based graphical control chip.We expected to provide customers with complete multimedia system solutions the second half of this year to helpcustomers' completion of system development as soon as possible.

For the car manufactures in China, the more and more demand for the in-vehicle multimedia information system drivesthem to develop and manufacture such systems, which makes the manufactures might provide the electronics systemwith high add-value. Therefore, it provides excellent opportunity for the development of the manufactures and helps themto achieve market leadership.

The challenges that the domestic manufactures are facing is the reliability and stability of the system. The infotainmentsystems become more complex, so it requires considering about the stability of the actual environment, quality controland system perspective while designing the system. Therefore, this becomes the largest challenge for the domesticmanufactures.

The microprocessor and graphics controller products developed by the latest new generation of car multimediaentertainment system follow the usual quality concept on automotive products. It focuses on quality control at thebeginning of the design, and make prevention to the defects might appear in order to ensure that our products meet thestrict automotive standard. Meanwhile, we enhanced the development of the system-chip and complete underlyingsoftware as well as middleware, which can shorten the development time significantly. At the same time, we increase theinvestment on the development of local technique and technique support. With these measures, our customers candesign competitive multimedia entertainment system faster and better with Fujitsu's products, in order to meet marketdemand.

Fujitsu's microprocessor has been widely used in the vehicle of various car manufactures. We have various electronicsystem designs and customer support experience, and also we have established a strong system development team. Wecan provide comprehensive local support from chip to system development, which will help us to get head in today'sincreasingly competitions. Meanwhile, it will help us to face all the challenges from our competitors. At the same time, thegraphics controller from Fujitsu has a leadership in the whole multimedia entertainment system. We are continuing todevelop next-generation graphics controller chip, and in the next few years, will provide its customers with more powerfulchips and systems.

Opportunities in 3G Networks

GPS places a very important role in vehicle infotainment systems. Providing services is of the great importance for futureGPS navigation. Apart from improving positioning precisions, it is also important for GPS to provide real time trafficinformation, and others, so as to guide the traffics. Of course, achieving automatic driving with combined technologiesshould be the ultimate goal for electronic companies.

Welch Ding, Product Manager of Fujitsu Microelectronics (Shanghai) Co Ltd

"From 2010 onward, 3G networks will join vehicle navigation systems, and will have a wide range of applications anddevelopments," Said Ding Jiezao, Product Manager of Fujitsu Microelectronics. With the ubiquitous high-speed 3Gnetwork, the vehicle navigation platform will achieve more online information services, communication services andentertainment services. For example, Fujitsu is now working with partners to combine high-speed 3G networks with thecompany's existing MB86R01 Jade navigation platform reference designs, in order to help customers achieve morein-car information application services.

At present, in China's mainstream vehicle navigation markets, the development of "after-sale market" is more vigorousthan "previously installed market", with diversified functions, such as, GPS navigation, Bluetooth, backup video, digital TVand others, almost including every aspect of common features. But different manufacturers have different productpositions. Take Fujitsu for example, the company is mainly involved in the previously installed market, and less involvedin after-sale market.

Entertainment Electronic Chip from Fujitsu Microelectronics

In the first quarter of 2010, Fujitsu will promote low-cost CD-less digital MP3 and WMA single-chip solutions formultimedia car audio. In terms of high-end auto navigation and multimedia entertainment, Fujitsu introduced the industry'sfirst "1394Automotive" (IDB-1394) controller chip MB88395 for high-definition video in 2009, to achieve high definition1080P video transmission, cutting down 30% of the cost in vehicle multimedia network systems, and reducing 70% of theharness (cables). The Graphics controller SoC Ruby MB86298 used in automotive infotainment systems, is not onlyprovide embedded systems with high graphic processing capabilities, but also is the industry's first chip that can putvideo signals to four displays, and handle four video inputs.

Components Times, March 2010

Lu Biao, Marketing Manager of Fujitsu Microelectronics (Shanghai) Co Ltd, took an interview with Components Times, sharing his views on trends of USB 3.0.

English Version:

Fight for the Throne of USB3.0

USB is the most popular transmission interface in the world, almost becomes the only specifications for externaltransmission and lays the foundation for USB Kingdom. USB3.0 specifications were introduced as high-blooded prince in2008 and are 10 times faster than USB2.0. Nowadays, the introduction of USB3.0 products means that it will hold realpower and formally ascend the throne. To USB3.0, taking the territory of his father is more like a war against himself andhis royal demeanor determines the future of USB Kingdom and even USB technology.

In the time when there was only train, we don't know that Taipei and Kaohsiung can be included in one-day life circle.Express railway changes people's action mode with its high speed. Have you once thought about how our informationbehavior will be changed if file transmission is 10 times faster than before?

Asus N series of notebooks have been equipped with USB3.0; HP and Fujitsu's notebooks have been certified by USB-IF(USB Implements Forum); Seagate and WD are promoting external hard disks; and PQI and Supertalent take the lead inFlash disks. These all are "merchandise" we can buy from the market.

USB3.0 is neither an idea without practical significance any more, nor a chip or process far away from us, quicklyreplaces USB2.0 omnipresent in our lives, even goes beyond PC industry and consumer electronics, and changes ourlives like express railway.

The Rise of USB Kingdom Attracts 2.7 Billion Users' Attention

As a conspicuous consumer electronics exhibition in USA, CES is viewed as an indicator for whether the economyrecovers or not in 2010. USB-IF exhibition booth stands tall and upright in the middle of South Hall of Las VegasConvention Center. As a transmission interface, USB3.0 becomes a hot topic of CES this year.

Why can USB3.0 attract so much attention? We should first know who his father is.

USB3.0 is the most popular transmission interface in the world - USB, which has experienced the times of USB1.0 andUSB1.1 and USB2.0 makes unprecedented success. According to statistical data provided by In-Stat, 2.7 billion USBdevices have been sold throughout the world by 2007, meaning that each living Chinese people hold a USB device ontheir right and left hands.

Figure 1. 2010 CES Show. USB3.0 becomes a hot topic and ASMedia Technology Inc. interacts with USB-IF well.(Photo/ASMedia)

Keen Competition between Chip Manufacturers

Dynastic Changes

Although USB Kingdom has a wide territory, USB transmission speed of only 480Mbps makes later products fail tomaximize their performance like a fancy roadster stuck in muddy ground.

In 2008, USB-IF released USB3.0 specifications, which is 10 times faster than USB2.0, can reach transmission speed ofup to 5Gbps and makes many manufactures go into battle.

Everyone can sense commercial opportunity. When USB transits from 2.0 to 3.0, intense reshuffle happens to upstreamchip manufacturers in industry chain. War situation of USB Host is simplex and only NEC gets stable shipment, butFresco has accepted the order from Taiwan manufacturers and is prepared for mass production. In addition, ASMediaTechnology Inc. actively prepares for the war and is predicted to launch low-cost Host chip. Fierce fight will be inevitable.

As for USB Device, the flame of war has started since USB2.0, and many new faces never met show up.

Foreign manufactures which launched new products, such as Core Micro Technology Co., Ltd. and FujitsuMicroelectronics, didn't go into battle of USB2.0. Many Taiwan manufacturers with strong strength enter this market, suchas ASMedia with Asus as its big shareholder and VIA Labs of IA Technologies, Inc. Those manufacturers which dedicatethemselves to USB field, such as ITE Tech. Inc. and Alcor Micro Corporation, take no action, and only Genesys Logicand Prolific Technology Inc. keep pace with the industry. These manufacturers have their own niches and the competitionin USB3.0 will be keen.

However, in this battle, Faraday Technology - IC design service provider - actually cut a smart figure. Only FaradayTechnology participated in SuperSpeed USB Developers Conference hold by USB-IF in May 2009, cooperated withFresco in UNB Host and with Prolific Technology Inc. in USB Device, and was the first to convert USB3.0 concept to realearning.

Pile Consolidating Action

Mainboard Manufacturers Give Sufficient Opportunities to Save Faces No matter how keen the competition is, playersjust want to bring USB3.0 to the market as soon as possible and make USB3.0 the king of high-speed transmission. Thefirst step is to seek help from USB Host to solidify their position.

Windows7 provides support for USB3.0, meaning that Microsoft gets the ticket for operating software. Everyone thoughtthat Intel - important driver behind USB-IF - would actively develop south-bridge chip with USB3.0 support, but in fact Intelheld a conservative attitude toward USB3.0 till the 1st quarter of 2010. Jingci Liu, director of technical marketingdepartment of Asia Pacific Area of Intel, said that everything was undetermined.

However, mainboard manufacturers can't wait that long. Asus, Giga-Byte Technology Co., Ltd. and other manufacturersintroduced mainboards and expansion cards with USB3.0 support. Zhixiong Chen, vice president of Asus, supportsUSB3.0 and said on CES show that USB3.0 would be highly likely to be generalized as long as manufacturers activelyinvest in it.

Through reviewing the achievement made in the first round, we can find that USB3.0 consolidates this position in USBHost though it is only supported by mainboard manufacturers instead of Intel and that the competition in USB Device willalso follow this mode.

Figure 2. USB Dashes Forward at an Increased Speed - BigPic:553x144

3 Steps for USB3.0 to Seize the Market

All the manufacturers who support USB3.0 hope that USB3.0 can replace USB2.0 omnipresent in our lives and seize themarket. However, 10 times faster transmission significantly increases development complexity. No matter whether theyinvested in USB before or not, the manufacturers said all with one voice: "It is really hard to implement physical layer!"

To Resist Foreign Aggression, We must First Get Rid of the Enemy within

Comparability Matters

Due to high speed, it is hard to control electrical characteristics and signal quality, and power management scheme ismore complex than USB2.0. Developers familiar with the whole architecture are the key and should perform cross testwith USB Host again and again so as to overcome the biggest challenge - comparability.

For example, ASMedia was first certified by USB-IF in China, started the R&D of critical IPs at the end of 2007 andcarefully deployed it for a long time. Genesys Logic has updated 4 versions before its product is launched so as toimplement absolutely reliable physical layer. Jifang Ma, deputy general manager of Prolific Technology Inc., said that theissue of comparability seems easy to solve at present when only NEC can provide products supporting USB Host, butthe permutation and combination will be too numerous to mention one by one in the future, so USB3.0 should learn fromUSB2.0 to implement the comparability.

By reviewing available USB3.0 application products, we can find that it mainly targets storage field. All the USB Devicechip manufacturers focus on USB to SATA storage control chips and some of them extend to bridge control chips. Therefore, the first target of USB3.0 is external storage devices.

Figure 3. Available USB Host chips are mostly from NEC and Fresco Started Mass Production in the 1st Quarter of ThisYear

Step1: External Storage Device

High-end Product Tests Water Temperature and Whether the Products can be Generalized or not Depends on Price

External storage devices turn to ultra high speed transmission due to some reasons. The capacity of hard disk androtating speed increase quickly, but transmission speed of USB2.0 is as slow as cattle. Once new specifications arereleased, if the price of new product isn't much different from previous product, why not choose new specifications tofree the speed suppressed for a long time? Nianqu Peng, technical marketing manager of Genesys Logic, said,"Consumers can feel the difference in speed!" The reason why USB3.0 is applied to storage devices is high speed.

Development pace of Trek Thumb Driver, the most popular external storage device, is slow due to the restriction ofnumber of coils and actual capacity of Flash, and only products from Supertalent and PQI were exhibited on CES show.Industrial Technology Research Institute also took the opportunity of USB3.0, cooperated with other manufacturers inlaunching USB3.0 thin memory cards, but whether thin memory card will be included in USB-IF specifications or notremains to be determined by Thin Card work group of USB-IF. Physical layer of thin card is harder to implement andconsequently is predicted to be put into mass production at the end of the 2nd quarter or at the beginning of the 3rdquarter.

External hard disk market booms at present. WD and Seagate have introduced external hard disks, and American andTaiwan manufacturers gain what they want. However, the product newly released by Seagate includes all the upgradekits and has selling price of up to US$179.99. Such a high price cools down consumers' enthusiasm for high speed. In allfairness, USB3.0 does has reason to make consumers in memory field pay for it, but after high-end products take overthe position, only mid-end and low-end products can be generalized among common person.

Step2: Consumer Electronic Products

Technologically Feasible but Difficult in IntegrationThat USB3.0 being the king is a step in storage area. However, what's the next step? The dominator in the era of 2.0 willnot always keep its place to 3.0. Similarly, the one getting a head start in storage area of 3.0 will not surely become thefinal winner. In the visible development progress, hub control chips and graphics control chips will be the next foreseeable

step. From the list of products certified by USB-IF, it can be seen that USB 3.0 products will be used in many devices inthe computer industry. In addition to mainboard, notebook, external hard disk and portable disk, USB 3.0 products will bedeeper into people's life with the advantage of super-high speed.

USB3.0 is only limited to computers in 2010 but will be extended to the field of consumer electronics since 2011, saidJohn O'Neill, the Vice President of Marketing of Symwave. Mr. LAU Chi Yuen, a team leader of Information &Communications Research Laboratories of Industrial Technology Research Institute of Taiwan holds the same attitudetowards USB3.0 and recognizes the huge potentials of USB3.0 slim memory card in the consumer electronics markets ofdigital camera, digital video camera, etc. Taking 3D digital camera as an example, one 3D photo is acquired based on thesynchronous operation of the left and right lens, doubling the memory space needs. Thus, large capacity with super-high-speed is just right, and USB3.0 will be an inevitable trend.

Surely, USB3.0 can be realized technologically. However, it undergoes the barrier of transmission interface. The coreproblem lies in whether new SD card specifications for key vendors can be integrated.

Step3: Wireless, Fiber and Communication Device

Exciting Prospects but Indefinite Implementations?

Express railway's unprecedented convenience makes people trying a round trip between Taipei and Kaohsiung in a day. However, will we see some innovations on the application layer after USB3.0 is widespread?

USB may serve as the transmission interface of screen videos, supposed by Perng Nei-Chiung daringly. Coincidently,USB monitors and DTV are really possible in the predictions of John O'Neill. With a closer relation between intelligentmobile phone and computer, the gap between device and host becomes increasingly blurred. USB may be applied tomobile phone. The more information processed by mobile phone, the more opportunity for USB3.0, said Ma Jifang.

Furthermore, there are some fantastic combinations, such as combination with fiber network or wireless unit. With soconvenient and quick applications, it really seems exciting. However, please bear in mind that USB3.0 only commencesits first step of expansion. Just like stocks of very high price are not real money before being sold. Therefore, it should beobserved whether those exciting prospects come true.

Figure 4 Chip Vendors Rush for USB3.0 Markets - BigPic:649x552

How to govern a domain upon inauguration? The biggest rival of USB3.0 is itself.

As for the current situations, will USB3.0 successfully gain the crown and take over the vast domain of USB kingdomfinally?

Of course for USB3.0. Because USB2.0 is so successful and popular, it is hard for USB3.0 to reject the crown. Interface1394 has lagged behind. Only SATA 6G is comparable in terms of speed. SATA reigns over internal components and USBcontrols externals in computer area all along. Thus, there is no direct conflict between them. But, the possibly duplicatede-SATA is still inferior to USB in terms of popularity and convenience. To be frank, the competitor of USB3.0 is just itselfand its previous version, rather than others, because of tremendous achievements of USB2.0.

Slender Reasons of Being Fast

Innovation Application is a Key Factor

Look at your mouse. Today mice all use USB interface but still with USB1.1 chip inside. Why does the specification of 10years ago still exist in the era of USB3.0? Simply, it is not necessary to break a butterfly on the wheel. Similarly, let'slearn from the thinking model of Apple's Steve Jobs. Just think about consumers' application demands, we will getamazing answer: "why so high speed?" If no reason of being fast is found out for consumers, why will consumers pay forhigh speed of USB3.0?

That is also why the whole industry believes that USB3.0 should actively develop innovative applications. But, a timely

arrival is better than an early one. How to play in future? It depends on how to transform ideas into businessopportunities. Currently all players, foreign-funded or Taiwan-based, old brand or rising star, intend to develop otherfields. Taiwan-based factories will keep its competitive price and develop more USB3.0 product lines. Foreign-fundedcompanies seem to take real actions too. John O'Neill expressed that Symwave has corresponding policies againstsharp decrease in chip price.

Figure 5 Diversified USB3.0 Application Products - BigPic:799x577

Chip Price Slides down

Is an Earlier Prime Time Valuable?

While talking about chip price, Ma Jifang expressed his feeling of both love and hate. He said, "This is the fact, we wouldfrankly accept it". Perhaps, this is the common thinking of many vendors plunging into the USB3.0 market.

John O'Neill has ever estimated in 2009 that USB3.0 would encounter its prime time for inauguration when the USB3.0chip delivery reaches 50 million and the price difference from 2.0 is less than US$ 4. In that year, the price of USB3.0was lower than US$10, and the difference is US$ 8, bringing a market of great potential. Now, the difference has droppedto US$3, but delivery in the whole industry is remarkably lower than the estimated amount. Perng Nei-Chiung agreedhonestly that USB2.0 chip suffered from quite low gross profit. USB3.0 was previously expected to boost profitability. But,the rate of drop is beyond expectation.

In comparison with the process of substituting USB1.1 with USB2.0, consumers believed that "they only pay a little bitmore money for better specification" when the price difference between USB2.0 and USB1.1 has gone down to a certainrange. In view of downward compatibility, USB2.0 thus formally substituted USB1.1 and made remarkable achievements. Now, vendors are eager to follow this model to substitute USB2.0 with USB3.0. The duration of price drop is excessivelyshortened. It is forecasted that the price difference would reach the baseline of US$ 1 a quarter later. As for this, Mr. LuBiao, Marketing Manager of Fujitsu Microelectronics (Shanghai) Co Ltd, said that the price fluctuation was a necessaryprocess but the market mechanism would dominate the price within a proper range.

Certainly, the falling price helps product popularity. With regard to the price fluctuation, John O'Neill and Ma Jifang havefixed the previous estimates and believed that the price difference had to be less than 10%, so that USB3.0 cansubstitute market place of 2.0 totally. However, is an earlier prime time valuable? Is an awkward king still able to show hisdignity?

Key Issue I

What a King will USB3.0 be?

It is said that USB3.0 could not get key breakthroughs without Intel's opinions. It is only partly right. Intel has really holdkeys. But when USB3.0 devices emerge almost with posture of disregard and competitors of AMD etc. actively contactrelated vendors, will Intel still take no action superciliously?

Figure 6 Intel is not active to launch USB3.0, possibly making chipset vendors getting a chance to step in.

Besides, Intel is a key member of USB-IF. NEC, a giant in terms of HOST, is quite friendly with Intel and will not wait for along time. It will even take a stand after the third quarter. Namely, Intel is only able to control the inauguration time butunable to decide who inherits the throne, because USB3.0 is the only candidate for successor of USB2.0 to date.

With its rich predecessor, USB3.0 will undoubtedly ascend the throne. Market reaction is really good. FujitsuMicroelectronics of early delivery has realized the goal predicted in 2009 of selling 1 million chips per month. Theresearch report of In-Stat indicates, the annual composite growth rate of USB3.0 markets would exceed 100% from 2009to 2012. In 2012, 500 million USB3.0 devices will be delivered.

But, values are created based on blind competitions of lowering price or of innovative application. The problem is of thesame significance for both vendor and consumer. Can the future tech life make breakthroughs? Can the chip vendorssurvive by lowering price? It depends on what a king will USB3.0 choose to be?

MB95200 Development Tools

Fujitsu Microelectronics' easy development tools with low cost. It is divided into two parts which can do chip erase, programming and simulation.

USB3.0-SATA bridge chip is another highlight at the event of IIC-China. According to Lu biao, Marketing Manager ofFujitsu Microelectronics (Shanghai) Co Ltd, the high-speed data transmission chip is the first of this kind in the industry, which supports USB 3.0 specification and high-speed USB, for PC peripheral equipments. Through the relevant USB 3.0intellectual property rights, Fujitsu integrated USB signal communication control circuit, SATA signal communicationcontrol circuit, USB 3.0, SATA protocol, order control circuit and high-speed serial interface technology which isproprietary owned by Fujitsu.

In fact, the delayed USB 3.0 chip introductions on the market by the main CPU manufacturers has hindered thedevelopment of USB 3.0 .But Fujitsu has expressed its full confidence for USB 3.0 in 2010: " the change is unstoppable, just like the change from USB1.1 to USB2.0, no one can stop it, we believe that the era of USB 3.0 will come true.Consumers will witness the emergence of a large number of related equipment at the end of this year."

Currently, USB 3.0 is mainly used in two ways: On motherboard, or go with appropriate adapters, both are fit in withFujitsu's equipments. "At present, USB 3.0 bridge is mainly used in external storage devices or CD drivers, I believe it willbe included in portable devices and disk players and others in the coming days." Said Lu biao.

Fujitsu Microelectronics introduced two USB3.0-SATA bridge chip solutions

According to the testing results on the USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 hard disk done by Fujitsu Microelectronics, theread-and-write speed of 3.0 has tripled over the speed of USB2.0 hard disk. If further connected with the solid-state harddisk, the speed can reach 200MB / s over. In fact, these data are increasing along with the quality improvements ofUSB3.0.

According to Fujitsu, the biggest problem of USB 3.0 adapter, today, is compatibility, which draws much attention. Theequipment may not recognize it when plugging. In light of this, Fujitsu has checked almost all kinds of hard disks on the

market, in order to solve this problem through updating our database. "At present, the market size is not big, but I believethe shipments will have a tremendous increase at Q3, Q4 of 2010," Said Lu biao.

In addition, Fujitsu Microelectronics also demonstrated 3D image display controller, MB86R01 SoC solutions for carmultimedia systems, and low-power consuming memory FCRAM products for digital consumer electronics, and ultra-lowpower consumption Full HD H.264 codec --MB86H55/MB86H56.

Cao Miao, Asia Pacific Deputy General Manager, Corporate Strategy and Marketing, Fujitsu Microelectronics:Introduce New Technology and Product to Elevate Brand Value

Corporate strategy of international semiconductor companies: "Chinese localization" to "Local globalization",demonstrates the continuous evolution of brand image.

The advancement of technology is increasing the investment risk in the semiconductor industry.

The latest corporate strategy of international semiconductor companies: "Chinese localization" to "Local globalization",demonstrates the continuous evolution of brand image. Companies are looking to introduce local designs and products tomeet demands of local consumers. International companies are attaching more and more importance to the localizationof their brand. (The increasing focus or importance of..) Local design centers and engineers, local customer needs, local

market demands, local technical support are all in the hopes of cultivating brands in the local market. "Local globalization"indicates that brands are being elevated to a new level, and that "Chinese localized" technology and products can also beadopted in the global market.

Stand in the local market to view the global market

The saying goes, "stand in the local market to view the global market." "Stand in the local market" means we have to bein the local market but does not necessarily mean understanding the local market. Fujitsu is fortunate to have a team ofexcellent local talent who have a keen understanding of the local business environment. They are able to distinguish theunspoken requirements and turn them into visually clear product instructions. Our professional engineering team then canturn these dreams into reality. In the last few years, Fujitsu has been building product R&D and technical support centersin Shanghai, Chengdu and Hong Kong. We have also participated in a broad spectrum of industry forums, cooperatedwith major companies in the industry and have built joint labs with many key universities. Today, more than half of ourengineering team is developing products and solutions for our local customers. Our products not only have adopted theadvanced technology from our headquarters, but can also meet the local market's demand. After many years of hardwork, products designed in our China design centers are also being sold in the global market, such as HD digital TVsolutions, MCU and power products.

We also have a long history of working with local Chinese universities, including, among other things, the building of jointlabs, joint development programs, organizing regular seminars, writing textbook and holding nation-wide contest.Currently, we have independent labs in over 10 universities, cooperating with them in all the major provinces and cities inChina. "Fujitsu Microelectronics Cup MCU Design Contest" has become a brand in of itself. Students from around 200universities participate in each contest, helping to bring Fujitsu's advanced technology and ideas onto campuses, whileallowing Fujitsu to see the great potential of Chinese students becoming excellent future talents.

Re-organization makes the market positioning clearer

Fujitsu has gone through various acquisitions and re-organizations during the many years of development. Namely,Fujitsu acquired Chengdu-based West Start Chips in 2007, a very important step in Fujitsu's localization strategy. TheChengdu design center works closely with the Shanghai design center and Hong Kong design center, delivering strongtechnical support for brand localization, while also interacting closely with the global market. Each have direct interactionwith other Fujitsu design centers all over the world, making them world leaders in their respective technologies.

In 2008, Fujitsu Microelectronics branched off from Fujitsu group and became an independent wholly owned subsidiary. This move was closely affected by the development of the industry, namely, that the advancement of technology isincreasing the investment risk in the semiconductor industry. As such companies have to be able to make decisionsquickly in today's fierce competitive environment. Although big companies have strong cash reserve, they are slower atdecision making and less flexible than smaller companies. Thus, the purpose of branching off was to be faster at decisionmaking and to raise operation efficiency. After branching off from Fujitsu group, Fujitsu Microelectronics has been able tomore easily build a clear image in the semiconductor industry. Before, when people thought of Fujitsu, they would think ofservers and computers, which are also excellent representatives of Fujitsu brand image. After branching off, when peoplethink of Fujitsu Microelectronics, they would know it as Fujitsu semiconductors. To this end, Fujitsu Microelectronics hasa clearer market positioning based on its original brand value.

Fujitsu has always attached great importance to the corporate brand, and continued to invest in maintaining the brandeven during the global financial crisis. Cutting cost was only felt at the operations level. Combined with our pursuit of highquality technology and service, we endeavor to give our brand a unique positioning and distinguishability. As thesemiconductor industry starts to recover from the economic crisis this year, we will put greater effort in investment inR&D and brand promotion. This year, we will introduce a line of automotive stereos, car body control and HD digital TVproducts, as well as new power products applied in LCD, PC, and NB. We will also introduce new microcontroller seriesproducts. Brand image is closely connected with a company's technology, products and service. Using advancedtechnology to continuously introduce new products that meet market demand is key to elevating Fujitsu's brand image.

Fujitsu's brand message

Fujitsu's brand represents Fujitsu's pursuit of the ideology of infinity. The infinity sign symbolizes the sun and the earth, the universe where sky and land are linked. This symbolizes the infinite space of Fujitsu's creativity. In addition, using thecolor red represents Fujitsu's infinite vitality in facing the future.

The most popular semiconductor brand in China 2009

Fujitsu Microelectronics: Localization strategy is being implemented step by step

In April 2009, Fujitsu announced its partnership with TSMC in the development of the 40 nm ASIC and ASSP. In doing soFujitsu Microelectronics has transformed from IDM to Fab-lite, changing its previous strategy of putting a great amount ofcapital investment in fab. Fujitsu's current strategy is more focused on IC design and solution development.

This shifting strategy is in line with the whole semiconductor industry's development trend, and has also enhanced FujitsuMicroelectronics' IC design and R&D. Today, Fujitsu Microelectronics has three design centers in China with a staff ofover 200. In 2009, the number of R&D staff increased by 20%. More importantly, most of Fujitsu's product lines for theChina market are already locally designed and developed, a very rare phenomenon among international semiconductorcompanies. The success of localization has enabled Fujitsu to grasp opportunities in the areas of automotive electronics, home electric appliance and other areas to enter the countryside market. It has also enabled Fujitsu the opportunity toenter early in the HD digital TV field. Today, Fujitsu's HD solution is vastly recognized and adopted by consumers. Apartfrom enhancing influence on microcontrollers, automotive electronics, audio, and low-power analog chip product lines,Fujitsu has also introduced the USB3.0, an important product, enriching its existing product lines.

The strategy of step by step localization is key to Fujitsu Microelectronics gaining brand influence in the China market. The transformation from IDM to Fab-lite has provided better conditions to the localization strategy, which will enablebetter development in the China market.

Highly Integrated Chip Reduce the Total Cost of Set-Top Box

Affa Au, General Manager of Applications Engineering Department from Fujitsu Microelectronics

Any manufacture on the chips for set-top box will not ignore the Chinese marketAs products from different manufacturers will gradually converge, product differentiation will be reflected in thesoftware more and more

Since 2009, the key product of Fujitsu Microelectronics is HD chip, which got good market response. For China's cableTV market, Fujitsu Microelectronics introduced MB86H60 series chip-based DVB-C HD set-top box solutions. This chip isembedded with security Chip-ID, the length of which is 128Byte, making it especially suitable for non-card CAS (ColumnAddress Strobe) or soft card CAS in one-way, two-way and NGB network. At the same time, as it is developed based onhigh-performance ARM11CPU architecture, it is easier to build a unified high-definition open platform. At present, thissolution has been used by the operators on TV cable in Guangxi, and more than 200,000 users are applying the set-topboxes based on this solution.

Fujitsu Microelectronics also displayed several solutions on terrestrial broadcast for Chinese market in this exhibition, such as the NGB HD set-top box solutions supporting both China's AVS standard and DRA standard. It has integrated thelow cost HD set-top box solutions on modulation chips from various popular CTTB (Terrestrial Digital TV).

Currently, around 70% set-top boxes are manufactured in China. Therefore, any manufacture for set-top box chip will notignore the Chinese market. A significant feature of China Digital TV market is the broadcasting operators are scattereddistributed and various operators have different product requirements. Fujitsu Microelectronics pays close attention tothese different demands to provide differentiated solutions.

The promotion of the set-top box face greater cost pressures, so the developing trend is to integrate more features in themain chip which is an effective way to reduce the cost. With the continuous improvement of chip integration, the productsof different manufacturers will gradually converge, so product differentiation will be reflected in the software more and

more. In the coming year, Fujitsu Microelectronics will also offer several chips for high-definition digital set-top box. Wehope that we can enhance the competitiveness of these products through the differentiated product characteristics inorder to avoid the homogenization of products and price wars. Even for the same product, we will introduce differenttechnologies based on various demands, for example, the package of the chip can be varied based on the requirementsof the whole system.

Anthony Wong, Senior Manager of Marketing Department of Fujitsu Microelectronics (Shanghai) Co Ltd, took aninterview with dvbcn.com during CCBN 2010, introducing Fujitsu's development concept and solutions in HDTV.

English Version:

An Interview to Anthony Wong, Senior Manager of Marketing Department of Fujitsu Microelectronics (Shanghai)Co Ltd

DVBCN Journalist: What architecture solutions are there for audio and video decoding in current set-top box market?

Anthony Wong: At present, set-top box is still embedded product. In embedded market, the architecture of the chips isdifferent from PC and there are various types. Under our understanding, there are tree mainstream CPU architecturessupporting audio and video decoding set-up box. The first is based on ARM architecture, the second is based on MIPSarchitecture and the third is issued by some chip manufacture. There is also CPU based on X86 and PowerPCarchitecture is the market, but the amount is less.

DVBCN JOURNALIST: Why will the customers choose ARM 11 architecture for HD set-top box? What solutions arethere?

Anthony Wong: Fujitsu's current high-definition decoder chip series are based on the ARM11 architecture, and also weare concerned about the development of latest ARM chip architecture. After a lot of market research, Fujitsu recognizesthe ultimate customer - the operator's demand has undergone great changes as the development of China's digitaltelevision to the present stage. Especially the main demands of the earlier cable operators have been evolved toconsider how to provide better digital TV services to the customers, how to enlarge their own development and how toenter the NGB, but not the original single translation from analog to digital. In order to achieve these ambitious goals, operators need more control rights, and their own networks and technology need to be respond to development needsflexible. In terms of technology, excessive dependence on a single vendor will bring a great risk. Unified, open technologyplatform can reduce operator's dependence on a single vendor and reduce risk. This is the main reason for Fujitsu toselect ARM architecture. CPU with ARM architecture has great openness and compatibility, which has a large applicationdevelopment community. For example, Apple's iPhone is based on the ARM architecture, and many users develop theirown applications running on the iPhone. The popular application also has considerable commercial value.

Currently, Fujitsu's HD set-top box decoder chip family based on ARM11 architecture has been widely used cable, satellite, terrestrial and other broadcast networks both in domestic and abroad. In the domestic cable TV market, Fujitsuis the major chip suppliers for the high-definition set-top box products in Guangxi. During this CCBN, Fujitsu will releaseanother new high-definition product line, for the NGB and the future more high-end market.

DVBCN JOURNALIST: How will ARM11 architecture maintain the security of the premise, helping operators to developvalue-added service?

Anthony Wong: For Fujitsu, our goal is to develop an unified and open platform for the operators through the cooperationwith the upstream and downstream industry chain partners, and provide sustained and timely technical support servicesfor operators which will help them to have own initiative, and have flexibility to carry out value-added services accordingto local conditions in order to be stronger.

DVBCN JOURNALIST: Does Fujitsu have set-top box solutions based on X86 architecture?

Anthony Wong: Fujitsu currently has no mature set-top box solutions based on X86 architecture. However, Fujitsu willprovide customers with cost-effective set-top box program based on market changes.

DVBCN JOURNALIST: How will the Operators, CA, middleware and application manufactures achieve value-added troughFujitsu's MB86H60 platform?

Anthony Wong: As the main chip provider, Fujitsu is the top one in the industry chain. CA vendors, middleware vendors, application vendors are most close to the operator in this chain. Fujitsu has maintained good cooperative relations withmany famous CA venders, middleware vendors and application vendors both domestic and abroad. Besides, we keepclose collaboration with other sectors in this chain. We hope to establish healthy industrial eco-system with the id-depthcooperation in each sector, and provide the open and unified platform solutions for the customers. Finally, it will promotethe value-added both to the customer and industry eco-system.

DVBCN JOURNALIST: Weather the 128-bit security chipID will ensure the security of the operator's system?

Anthony Wong: As the main chip supplier, Fujitsu has implanted 128-Byte length security ChipID into MB86H60 SeriesHD chip, and this ChipID is unique and not repetitive. Some of the region can write the customized data based oncustomer demand. ChipID can not be changed after shipping. This security ChipID can be used as an effectivecomplement to CA system, and jointly provide operators with system-level security.
