For your safety

This manual contains important information for safely and correctly using this product.

Carefully read the manual before using this product. Radio interference

This product is a "Class A" ITE (Information Technology Equipment). In a domestic environment this product may cause radio interference, in which case the user may be required to take appropriate measures. VCCI-A

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors

The aluminum electrolytic capacitors used in the product's printed circuit board assemblies and in the mouse and keyboard are limited-life components. Use of these components beyond their operating life may result in electrolyte leakage or depletion, potentially causing emission of foul odor or smoke.

As a guideline, in a normal office environment (25°C) operating life is not expected to be reached within the maintenance support period (5 years). However, operating life may be reached more quickly if, for example, the product is used in a hot environment. The customer shall bear the cost of replacing replaceable components which have exceeded their operating life. Note that these are only guidelines, and do not constitute a guarantee of trouble-free operation during the maintenance support period.

High safety use

This product has been designed and manufactured to be used in commercial and/or industrial areas as a server.

When used as visual display workplace, it must not be placed in the direct field of view to avoid incommoding reflections (applies only to TX server systems).

The device has not been designed or manufactured for uses which demand an extremely high level of safety and carry a direct and serious risk of life or body if such safety cannot be assured.

1 IntroductionThe Fujitsu Cluster-in-a-box Solution provides a fail-safe infrastructure based on PRIMERGY Blade or Cloud eXtension servers with Windows Server 2012 that provides easy scalability and investment protection.

1.1 Concept and target groups for this manual

This operating manual describes how to complete the cluster installation using the Initial Configuration Tasks wizard.

I Please note, that the Initial Configuration Tasks wizard must not be used to configure the cluster after recovering or replacing a node!

Use Failover Cluster Manager and standard Windows setup utilities instead.

This operating manual is intended for those responsible for installing the cluster and to put your cluster into operation.

To understand the various configuration options, you will need to be familiar with the fields of hardware and data transmission and you will require a basic knowledge of the underlying operating system.

1.3 Requirements

The cluster setup described in this document requires:

– Active Directory has to be in place at your network.

– Domain administrator rights are needed to be able finishing the installation process.

Introduction

– Make sure that DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is enabled on your network. Your cluster is automatically configured to obtain an IP address from the DHCP server.

– Make sure that the Microsoft hotfix http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976424 is installed on domain controllers with Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008R2 without SP1.

3 Installation steps, overviewThis chapter contains an overview of the steps necessary to complete the installation of your cluster. Links take you to sections where you can find more detailed information about the respective steps:

Ê First of all, it is essential that you familiarize yourself with the safety information in chapter "Important information" on page 19.

Ê Make sure that the hardware installation of your cluster is complete as described in the related operating manuals.

Ê Make sure that all necessary manuals (see "Documentation overview" on page 9) are available; print out the PDF files if required.

Ê Familiarize yourself with the controls and indicators on the front and rear of the cluster as described in the related operating manuals.

Ê Establish console connections to the cluster nodes and configure the cluster (see "Starting up and operation" on page 35).

4 Important informationIn this chapter you will find essential information regarding safety when working on your server enclosure.

4.1 Safety instructions

I The following safety instructions are also provided in the manual "Safety Notes and Regulations" or " 安全上のご注意 ".

This device meets the relevant safety regulations for IT equipment. If you have any questions about whether you can install the server enclosure in the intended environment, please contact your sales outlet or our customer service team.

V CAUTION!

● The actions described in this manual shall be performed by technical specialists. A technical specialist is a person who is trained to install the server enclosure including hardware and software.

● Repairs to the device that do not relate to CSS failures shall be performed by service personnel. Please note that unauthorized interference with the system will void the warranty and exempt the manufacturer from all liability.

● Any failure to observe the guidelines in this manual, and any improper repairs could expose the user to risks (electric shock, energy hazards, fire hazards) or damage the equipment.

● Before installing/removing internal options to/from the server enclosure, turn off the server enclosure, all peripheral devices, and any other connected devices. Also unplug all power cords from the power outlet. Failure to do so can cause electric shock.

Before starting up

V CAUTION!

● During installation and before operating the device, observe the instructions on environmental conditions for your device (see the related operating manual).

● If the server enclosure has been moved from a cold environment, condensation may form both inside and on the outside of the machine.

Wait until the server enclosure has acclimatized to room temperature and is absolutely dry before starting it up. Material damage may be caused to the server enclosure if this requirement is not met.

● Only transport the server enclosure in the original packaging or in packaging that protects it from impacts and jolts.

Installation and operation

V CAUTION!

● This unit should not be operated in ambient temperatures above 35 °C.

● If the unit is integrated into an installation that draws power from an industrial power supply network with an IEC309 connector, the PSU's fuse protection must comply with the requirements for non-industrial power supply networks for type A connectors.

● The unit automatically adjusts itself to a mains voltage in a range of 100 V - 240 V. Ensure that the local mains voltage lies within these limits.

● This device must only be connected to properly grounded power outlets or insulated sockets of the rack's internal power supply with tested and approved power cords.

● Ensure that the device is connected to a properly grounded power outlet close to the device.

Important information

V CAUTION!

● Ensure that the power sockets on the device and the properly grounded power outlets are freely accessible.

● The On/Off button or the main power switch (if present) does not isolate the device from the mains power supply. To disconnect it completely from the mains power supply, unplug all network power plugs from the properly grounded power outlets.

● Always connect the server enclosure and the attached peripherals to the same power circuit. Otherwise you run the risk of losing data if, for example, the server enclosure is still running but a peripheral device (e.g. memory subsystem) fails during a power outage.

● Data cables must be adequately shielded.

● Ethernet cabling has to comply with EN 50173 and EN 50174-1/2 standards or ISO/IEC 11801 standard respectively. The minimum requirement is a Category 5 shielded cable for 10/100 Ethernet, or a Category 5e cable for Gigabit Ethernet.

● Route the cables in such a way that they do not create a potential hazard (make sure no-one can trip over them) and that they cannot be damaged. When connecting the server enclosure, refer to the relevant instructions in this manual.

● Never connect or disconnect data transmission lines during a storm (risk of lightning hazard).

● Proper operation of the system (in accordance with IEC 60950-1/2 resp. EN 60950-1/2) is only ensured if the casing is completely assembled and the rear covers for the installation slots have been fitted (electric shock, cooling, fire protection, interference suppression).

● Only install system expansions that satisfy the requirements and rules governing safety and electromagnetic compatibility and those relating to telecommunication terminals. If you install other expansions, they may damage the system or violate the safety regulations. Information on which system expansions are approved for installation can be obtained from our customer service center or your sales outlet.

● The components marked with a warning notice (e.g. lightning symbol) may only be opened, removed or exchanged by authorized, qualified personnel. Exception: CSS components can be replaced.

● The warranty is void if the server enclosure is damaged during installation or replacement of system expansions.

● Only set screen resolutions and refresh rates that are specified in the operating manual for the monitor. Otherwise, you may damage your monitor. If you are in any doubt, contact your sales outlet or customer service center.

● Before installing/removing internal options to/from the server enclosure, turn off the server enclosure, all peripheral devices, and any other connected devices. Also unplug all power cords from the outlet. Failure to do so can cause electric shock.

● Do not damage or modify internal cables or devices. Doing so may cause a device failure, fire, or electric shock.

● Devices inside the server enclosure remain hot after shutdown. Wait for a while after shutdown before installing or removing internal options.

● The circuit boards and soldered parts of internal options are exposed and can be damaged by static electricity. Before handling them, first touch a metal part of the server enclosure to discharge static electricity from your body.

● Do not touch the circuitry on boards or soldered parts. Hold the metallic areas or the edges of the circuit boards.

Working with CDs/DVDs/BDs and optical drives

When working with devices with optical drives, these instructions must be followed.

V CAUTION!

● Only use CDs/DVDs/BDs that are in perfect condition, in order to prevent data loss, equipment damage and injury.

● Check each CD/DVD/BD for damage, cracks, breakages etc. before inserting it in the drive.

Note that any additional labels applied may change the mechanical properties of a CD/DVD/BD and cause imbalance.

Damaged and imbalanced CDs/DVDs/BDs can break at high drive speeds (data loss).

Under certain circumstances, sharp CD/DVD/BD fragments can pierce the cover of the optical drive (equipment damage) and can fly out of the device (danger of injury, particularly to uncovered body parts such as the face or neck).

● High humidity and airborne dust levels are to be avoided. Electric shocks and/or server enclosure failures may be caused by liquids such as water, or metallic items, such as paper clips, entering a drive.

● Shocks and vibrations are also to be avoided.

● Do not insert any objects other than the specified CDs/DVDs/BDs.

● Do not pull on, press hard, or otherwise handle the CD/DVD/BD tray roughly.

● Do not disassemble the optical drive.

● Before use, clean the optical disk tray using a soft, dry cloth.

● As a precaution, remove disks from the optical drive when the drive is not to be used for a long time. Keep the optical disk tray closed to prevent foreign matter, such as dust, from entering the optical drive.

● Hold CDs/DVDs/BDs by their edges to avoid contact with the disk surface.

● Do not contaminate the CD/DVD/BD surface with fingerprints, oil, dust, etc. If dirty, clean with a soft, dry cloth, wiping from the center to the edge. Do not use benzene, thinners, water, record sprays, antistatic agents, or silicone-impregnated cloth.

● Be careful not to damage the CD/DVD/BD surface.

● Keep the CDs/DVDs/BDs away from heat sources.

● Do not bend or place heavy objects on CDs/DVDs/BDs.

● Do not write with ballpoint pen or pencil on the label (printed) side.

● Do not attach stickers or similar to the label side. Doing so may cause rotational eccentricity and abnormal vibrations.

● When a CD/DVD/BD is moved from a cold place to a warm place, moisture condensation on the CD/DVD/BD surface can cause data read errors. In this case, wipe the CD/DVD/BD with a soft, dry cloth then let it air dry. Do not dry the CD/DVD/BD using devices such as a hair dryer.

● To avoid dust, damage, and deformation, keep the CD/DVD/BD in its case whenever it is not in use.

● Do not store CDs/DVDs/BDs at high temperatures. Areas exposed to prolonged direct sunlight or near heating appliances are to be avoided.

I You can prevent damage from the optical drive and the CDs/DVDs/BDs, as well as premature wear of the disks, by observing the following suggestions:

– Only insert disks in the drive when needed and remove them after use.

– Store the disks in suitable sleeves.– Protect the disks from exposure to heat and direct sunlight.

Laser information

The optical drive complies with IEC 60825-1 laser class 1.

V CAUTION!

The optical drive contains a light-emitting diode (LED), which under certain circumstances produces a laser beam stronger than laser class 1. Looking directly at this beam is dangerous.

Never remove parts of the optical drive casing!

4.4 Transporting the system unit

V CAUTION!

● Only transport the system unit in its original packaging or in suitable packaging which protects it from knocks and jolts.For the Japanese market, transporting the device in its original packaging does not apply.

Only unpack the system unit at the place where you want to set it up.

● Ask someone for help with carrying the system unit. Because the PRIMERGY BX400 S1 system unit is large and heavy, at least two people are needed.

● Before lifting the system unit, remove all server blades, storage blades, connection blades, management blades, all power supply units, fan units and dummy modules to reduce the weight.

● Only lift or carry the system unit by the handles on the long sides.

● Never lift or carry the system unit by the handles on the front or back.

4.6 Notes on installing the BX400 S1 system unit in the rack

V CAUTION!

● For safety reasons, at least two people are required to install the system unit in the rack because of its weight and size.

(For the Japanese market, please refer to " 安全上のご注意 ".)

● Before lifting the system unit, remove all server blades, storage blades, connection blades, management blades, all power supply units, fan units and dummy modules to reduce the weight.

● To lift or carry the system unit, always use the handles on the long sides.

● Never lift or carry the system unit by the handles on the front or back of the unit.

● For safety reasons, no more than one unit may be removed from the rack at any one time during installation or maintenance work.

● Make sure that the anti-tilt plate is correctly mounted when you set up the rack.

● The rack may tip over if more than one unit is removed at the same time.

● Before connecting or disconnecting cables, read the notes in the chapter "Important Notes" in the technical manual for the relevant rack. The technical manual for the rack is supplied with the rack.

● The rack must be connected to the mains by an authorized specialist (electrician).

● If the server system is integrated in a rack installation that receives power from an industrial (public) power supply network with the IEC309 connector, the (public) power supply protection must comply with the requirements for the non-industrial (public) power supply networks for the type A connector.

● The power supply for the rack should be distributed over the three phases of a three-phase mains connection.

5 Starting up and operationV CAUTION!

Follow the safety instructions in chapter "Important information" on page 19.

The following sections will guide you through the initial configuration of your cluster.

5.1 Requirements

– Active Directory has to be in place at your network.

– Domain administrator rights are needed to be able finishing the installation process.

– DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is enabled on your network. Your cluster is automatically configured to obtain an IP address from the DHCP server.

– Microsoft hotfix http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976424 is installed on domain controllers with Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008R2 without SP1.

– The hardware installation of your cluster is complete as described in the related operating manuals.

– The following requirement applies only to Fujitsu Cluster-in-a-box based on PRIMERGY CX420-M:LAN cable to connect port 1 of the CX272 S1 add on controllers to establish the Live Migration connection, see figure "CX420 S1 server enclosure configuration (M model)" on page 49.

– A client computer running the Microsoft Windows operating system is connected to the LAN.

5.2 Establishing console connections to the cluster nodes

There are different procedures how to establish remote console connections to the nodes of BX400 S1 and CX420 S1 based clusters.

I The service LAN port and the LAN ports for blade server management must be in different LAN subnetworks.

It is recommended to operate the management blade user interface in a separate broadcast domain for the server management.

Ê Connect the management LAN Up port (4) to the LAN.

Ê Launch a web browser and enter the Management Agent Administrative URL to log in to the management blade web interface. For further information, refer to the "PRIMERGY BX900 Blade Server Systems ServerView Management Blade S1 User Interface Description".

Ê Connect an workstation to the serial port of the management blade (3) and open a terminal session, see the "PRIMERGY BX900 Blade Server Systems ServerView Management Blade S1 User Interface Description".

Ê Open the Management Agent – Management Agent Information menu to view the Management Agent Administrative URL.

Ê Log in to the management blade web interface as described above.

Launching a video redirection to a server blade

The management blade web interface uses the iRMC Advanced Video Redirection (AVR) function to provide a virtual console for the server blades. AVR allows you to control the mouse and keyboard of the managed server blade from your remote workstation and to show the current graphical and text output from the managed server blade.

To open a virtual console for the server blade proceed as follows.

Ê Enter the management blade web interface.

Ê Open the Components – System – Server Blades – Server Blade-x menu for the desired server blade.

Ê Open the Configuration tab.

Ê Scroll to the iRMC Address Configuration box.

Ê Make sure that Management LAN is selected in the LAN Port list box.

Ê Click the Video Redirection button in the status frame of the server blade menu.

Ê Launch a video redirection to the second server blade as described above.

Ê Identify the IP address of the second server node as described above.

Launching a video redirection to the server node

Ê Open a web browser on the remote workstation and enter the IP address of the iRMC S2/S3 of the server node.

The login prompt appears.

Ê Type in the data for the default administrator account.

Ê Click OK.

The iRMC S2/S3 web interface opens showing the System Information page.

Ê Open the Console Redirection - Video Redirection menu.

Under Video Redirection click Start Video Redirection or Start Video Redirection (Java Web-Start) to start a AVR session.

5.4 Initial cluster configuration

I When starting the node the first time Windows will log in automatically.

You may find that the system prompts for the user name and password to log in even during the setup period. The default settings are:

5.4.1 Language and region settings

Ê Open the virtual console to the first node.

Ê Open the Power Control drop-down menu and select Power On to switch on the node.

Your node will perform a hardware test and then boot the pre-installed Microsoft Windows Server 2012 operating system.

Once the boot process is completed, the language settings menu is displayed.

Ê Select the required language.

Ê Click Next.

The license terms page will appear.

Ê Accept the license agreement by selecting the corresponding option.

Ê Click Accept.

The Region and Language page will appear.

Ê Select country/region, language and keyboard layout that you want to use to Windows.

Ê Click Next.

Wait until the settings are performed.The Initial Configuration Tasks wizard will appear.

I Do not select the Do not show this window at logon check box, otherwise the Initial Configuration Tasks wizard will not open after logging in. If you have disabled the wizard by mistake, you can reopen it as follows:

User name: AdministratorPassword: Pass.word

Ê Click Start, click Run, type C:\Windows\System32\oemoobe\oemoobe.exe and then click OK.

5.4.2 View Connection Status

In this section, you will have to connect to the second node.

Ê Switch to the virtual console of the second node.

Ê Take note of the IP address displayed in the message area and return to the console of the first node.

Ê Click Connect to the second node, and then, in the Connect to the second node box enter the IP address of the second node and click Apply.

After connecting to the first node, the Initiatial Configuration Tasks wizard of the second node terminates.

5.4.3 Configure Networking

In this section, you can configure the network controllers of the nodes. You must use the first link to configure the required networks automatically.

Ê Click Assigns user-friendly IP addresses to LAN teams; requires a restart of this wizard.

I This task requires a restart of the Initial Configuration Tasks wizard.

The Network box will appear.

Ê Click Start Process and wait until the configuration process is complete.

I Once the process has finished a message box will appear displaying information on how to restart the Initial Configuration Tasks wizard. Click OK to close the wizard.

Ê Open the Windows Start menu and click OEM_OOBE, to restart the Initial Configuration Tasks wizard.

In the Configure Networking section the configured IP address settings for the nodes will be displayed.

5.4.4 Configure settings

This section contains the tasks for configuring timezone and adding the cluster to a domain.

Ê Click Provide cluster name and domain.

The Cluster Name and Domain Join Wizard will appear with the Specify the Active Directory Domain and User Credentials step.

Ê Enter the name of an existing Active Directory and user name and password of an account which has administrative permissions in that domain.

Ê Click Next.

The Specify the Cluster Management Name step will appear.

Ê Enter the Cluster management name.

I Do not use a cluster management name which is already used in your environment.

The node names will be generated automatically using the following format:

Cluster management name-N(1|2)

Using the Change node name option, you can change the node names.

Ê Click Next.

The Add Accounts to the Local Administrators Group step will appear.

Ê Click Add ... to add other domain users or groups to the local administrators group.

Ê Click Next.

The Change the Local Administrator Password step will appear.

Ê Enter a new password and confirm the password.

Ê Click Next.

The Review Settings and Join Domain step will appear.

Ê Click Join to apply the displayed settings.

The Confirmation step will appear.

I Once you click the Close button you will receive a message that both nodes must be restarted. Click OK to restart the nodes.

The node will restart.

Ê Login to the first node as domain administrator, e.g. domain\administrator name.

The Initial Configuration Tasks wizard will start automatically to complete the cluster configuration.

5.4.5 Provision Cluster Storage

Ê Click Best-Practice Storage Pool Configuration to set up the recommended cluster storage.

The Best Practice Storage Spaces box will appear. Select 1 or 2 hotspare disks for the storage pool.

V CAUTION!

Recommendation: Do not run Storage Spaces without at least one hotspare disk.

Ê Select the preferred option.

I Once you click the Start Process button all data within the cluster storage will be deleted. After finishing the process a Status alert will appear. Click OK to return to the wizard.

The configured setting will be displayed in the message area of the Provision Cluster Storage section.

5.4.6 Deploy the Cluster

Ê Click Validate and create the cluster.

The Cluster Validation and Setup Wizard will appear with the Validate Failover Cluster Configuration step.

Ê Click the Validate button.

I Validation testing may run for an extended period of time.

Wait until the message "Cluster validation testing has completed" successfully is displayed below the progress bar.

Ê Click Next.

Ê Modify the cluster management name if needed.

Ê Click Next.

The Review Settings and Create Failover Cluster step will appear.

The cluster settings are displayed.

The tasks will be performed.

Ê Click Close to return to the Initial Configuration Tasks wizard.

5.4.7 Cluster-Aware Updating

This section is used to configure the Windows Update provided by Microsoft that provides hotfixes for the Windows operating system.

Ê Click Use Cluster-Aware Updating to help keep this cluster secure and up-to-date and open firewall ports to enable updating to open the relevant wizard.

5.4.8 Handle Fujitsu CiB related Components

This section provides tasks for updating the nodes using ServerView Update Management and for creating virtual machines.

Ê Click Update Node 1.

The Update Manager Expresss menu will appear.

It is recommended to select Quick Mode to install all updates for the node automatically.

Ê Click Update Node 2.

To perform this task you have to log into the second node.

Ê Enter the domain administrator password to connect to the second node.

Once you click the OK button the Update Manager Expresss menu for the second node will appear. Proceed as described for the first node.

The following task applies only to medium (M) or large (L) models of the Fujitsu Cluster-in-a-box. If installing a small (S) model, this link will not appear.

Ê Click Copy Workload to Cluster Shared Volume and create Virtual Machines.

I Once the process has finished a message box will appear. Click OK to return to the wizard.

6 Troubleshooting

6.1 Recovering / resetting a cluster node

There are two variants of recovery DVDs available, one for the small and one for the medium/large Cluster-in-a-box edition.

There are two types of methods when recovering a cluster node:

– Recovering the operating system while preserving partitioning of the system disk

– Recovering the operating system while repartitioning the system disk

V CAUTION!

System disk content will be deleted with both options.

I Note on backups

Fujitsu Technology Solutions cannot be held responsible for data loss due to hardware failure or system recovery. Ensure to schedule and perform regular backups of your data! Your responsibilities also include storing and maintaining backup media.

In order to design a backup schedule, either use your preferred backup solution or the backup and recovery features built right into Windows operating system. Windows Server Backup helps you create backups and, if needed, perform a recovery of your operating system, applications, and data. By using these features appropriately and implementing good operational practices, you can improve your organization's ability to recover from lost data and hardware failures.

Ê Ensure that a functional disk is installed in the node to be recovered!

I The disk must be configured as a member of a RAID 1 array.

Ê Establish a virtual console connection to the iRMC of the node, see section "Establishing console connections to the cluster nodes" on page 35.

Ê Connect an optical drive to the node. For detailed information, please refer to the "PRIMERGY CX272 S1 Server Node Operating Manual" or to the "PRIMERGY BX920 S3 server blade Upgrade and Maintenance Manual", respectively.

Ê Ensure that the Recovery DVD which applies to your cluster is in your DVD drive!

Ê Open the Power Control drop-down menu of the iRMC S2/S3 window and select Power On to boot the node from the DVD.

Once the boot process is completed, the Recovery Installation menu is displayed.

Ê Click Yes to recover the operating system while repartitioning the system disk or No to recover the operating system while preserving system disk partitioning.

I The recovery installation will be performed completely unattended. The node will reboot several times during the process.

Ê Wait until the language setting menu is displayed, indicating that the installation process is complete. This will take about up to 90 minutes.

Ê Make the required settings, see "Language and region settings" on page 50.

Once the language and region settings are performed, the Initial Configuration Tasks wizard will appear.

V CAUTION!

Do not use the Initial Configuration Tasks wizard to configure the cluster after recovering or replacing a node!

Use Failover Cluster Manager and standard Windows setup utilities instead.

Ê Click the Close button to terminate the Initial Configuration Tasks wizard.

6.2 Fixing disk errors

6.2.1 Error situations

6.2.1.1 Less severe errors

If a less severe error occurs on a physical disk during a write operation to this disk, the physical disk is marked as unhealthy. The corresponding virtual disk is marked unhealthy too and the operational status is set to Degraded:

If subsequent writes to the physical disk succeed, the physical disk is marked as healthy again, while the virtual disk is still marked as unhealthy, because the data on disks is out of sync.

The virtual disk remains degraded until either a repair operation is started or an automatic re-synchronization occurs, which occurs after a five minute interval.

To force that re-synchronization, please right click on the virtual disk and choose Repair Virtual Disk:

6.2.1.2 Severe errors

If a severe error occurs on a physical disk Storage Spaces marks the disk as unhealthy:

The virtual disk is then marked as degraded until the failed disk is replaced and a repair operation is started. If a hot spare is present in the storage pool, the hot spare comes online immediately. Depending on the error code the disk drive is

returning, Storage Spaces will also illuminate the failure LED for the affected slot (the failure LED is available on PRIMERGY disk enclosures released for Storage Spaces).

To locate the failed physical disk, you can switch on the LED at this disk. You have two possibilities to illuminate the LED:

1. Illuminate the LED via Storage Spaces GUI or

2. Illuminate the LED using PowerShell

The second method is useful, if the failed disk is not visible in File and Storage Services.

With Cmdlets Get-PhysicalDisk and Get-VirtualDisk the disk can be listed in PowerShell:

6.2.4 Transitional Errors

If Storage Spaces encounters a read error, it will not mark a disk as failed. In a Mirror or Parity configuration, Storage Spaces attempts to retrieve the alternate copy of the data.

In the event that a disk cannot be written to or read from, but never returns an error, Storage Spaces treats the condition as a transitory failure. The action that Storage Spaces takes is configurable and defined by the Set-StoragePool -RetireMissingPhysicalDisks cmdlet; "Auto" is the default:

6.2.5 Automatic Email Notification

To send an automatic error notification via email to a system administrator or do some other actions if an error occurs on a Storage Spaces disk, you can attach a task to a certain type of eventlog and choose whether to send an email or run a command:

Option BehaviourEnabled If a disk is missing but its enclosure is still

present, treat the missing disk as failed and retire it.

Disabled If a disk is missing, wait for either the disk to reconnect or for administrative action. GUI will show a status "Lost communication".

Auto If the pool has a hot spare, follow the Enabled logic. Otherwise, follow the Disabled logic.
