«Fuerteventura enMúsica» waves goodbyeto its Canarian public

El gancho Chambao made it possible for 12.000people to meet in July in Playa de la Concha in El Cotillo(La Oliva) and participate in the Fuerteventura en Mú-sica festival. The event took place on a night when thewind finally calmed down and allowed the public toenjoy the last few concerts that were scheduled.

Los Rumanians Fanfare Ciocarlia closed the festivaland gave their best to the public that did not leaveuntil this great orchestra left themselves. The localsJazz Homos brought a local touch to the party whileFuel Fandango was a lovely surprise and inspireddancers for the night. Dj MPS Pilot followed the sameline as during the previous day with a lot of good musicbetween group swaps.

Liderados por La Mari that were backed up at timesby artists from Fuel Fandango and Chambao, gave aquality performance for Fuerteventura en Música, trueto their style, simple and energetic. This group cameon stage and their famous and peculiar flamenco chillgave an amazing performance for the audience on thebeach.

The musical talent of Jazz Homos took the spectatorsto the authentic sound of New Orleans during the firstact of the night. Four musicians of different origins(one from Fuerteventura, one from Lanzarote, one from

Aragon and one from Andalucia) and three differentstyles (folklore, funk and classic) gave a result of apeculiar jazz with Canarian hints.

The performance of Fuel Fandango got the crowdmoving with their organic music with rock, funk andflamenco hints of the Ale Acosta and Nita duo. At thefront, many people danced with the ex from MojoProject and enjoyed the voice of his alter ego, the fla-

menco that flows from the soul and the black musicfrom the throat of Nita.

The closing act came with the hurricane of wind andmetal of Fanfare Ciocarlia. The orchestra’s performan-ce was a prodigious musical act and made it hard tobelieve that this typical Rumanian orchestra came inits totality from a village of 400 habitants. The perfor-mance was of pure gypsy style, demonstrating easilywhy this simple group of veteran musicians deservedthe prize in the European category of the World MusicAwards.

QUIÉN ES QUIÉN EN LA ISLA / WHO’S WHO IN THE ISLAND? /WER IST WER AUF DER INSEL?

FMHOY - Fuerteventura

¿What is G. D. R. Maxorata?We are a non-profit-making association created as a

group for the island’s rural development. We areappointed by Europe as well as by the CanarianGovernment and our objective is linked to the LEADERinitiative, which benefits from European funds and thatis currently included in Part 4 of the P.D.R. (RuralDevelopment Programme) of the Canarian Government.

This is where some measures that are grantable areestablished to which we don’t comply at present andwe are searching for projects that would fit therequirements.Which types of projects?

We are looking for innovative projects that can helpFuerteventura’s rural development, diversify localproducts and increase the quality of existing ones. Theidea is to boost initiatives, both private and from publicentities, by getting subventions every time for themaximum possible amount assigned to each projectas long as it fits the requirements. Are those funds purely for new businesses andprivate initiatives?

70 % of the LEADER funds investment must be spenton private initiatives and 30% can be invested on publicentities. In those cases it is always spent to restorehistoric or natural heritage, and also on social servicesprojects that improve quality of life in small ruralvillages, such as children dining halls in schools, etc. When do applications start?

The first call started on 10th March and lasted sixtydays when 221.000 euros were made available. Thereis a maximum of six months to reply to projects thathave been selected, although we don’t want to waitthat long.Who decides on who deserves the subvention or not?

It is the board of Directors in Fuerteventura thatchooses projects that comply with the requirementsand that according to the grade given and theinnovation, deserve to receive a grant.

A technical viability survey is carried out and once ithas been assessed, projects that pass are publicallyannounced. Later, a contract is signed confirming thatwe undertake to pay what has been agreed afterchecking that the project has been completed andcomplies with what was scheduled.Who belongs to the board of Directors that makethose decisions?

This association was created with the participationin the board of directors of each economic field on the

island, which means that they are completely awareof Fuerteventura’s necessities in rural areas.

We aim to be completely transparent as far asmanagement of allocations of subventions to variousprojects is concerned. We want to be dissociated fromboth politics and from the previous association’s badimage and bad management, when everything washighly secret, which was badly interpreted.

We have created a webpage where our status isclearly explained, as well as the formalities requiredfor who would like to apply and how projects areassessed. Furthermore we help in the applicationprocess and to prepare all necessary documents andrequirements for those who need assistance. The ideais for no one to feel that they cannot apply for lack oftechnical means to present their project. Are the LEADER funds the only objective of thisassociation?

No, we have other types of initiatives, for examplewe collaborate with the Canarian Institute for Women. We have already set a date for the 3rd October whenwe will organise Open Days to promote women’sassociations, especially for women in rural areas whosometimes, because of their isolation, cannot benefitfrom some advantages.

If women in isolated areas created an association, they could benefit from additional services such asnurseries, school transport, dining halls for children, etc., by creating a common project they would alsomanage to have more time for their own activities.

Many women already have their responsibilities withagricultural and livestock activities, given thathusbands tend to take care of selling and spend moretime away from the farm.

We want women to be able to have a choice andlegally exploit and share the farm business instead ofworking in the shadows. How can one become a member of G.D.R.?

Like in any association, it only takes a simple requestand people can also join through channels establishedto become member of the board of directors. We wishfor any association or connection for the Island’sdevelopment to be represented both at the member’sassembly and at the board of directors.

Before ending this interview, we would like to invitethe numerous businesspeople of Fuerteventura tocome and meet with us and tell us about their concernsand ideas so that, in complete confidentiality, we canfind adequate ways to help and make their projectshappen.

QUIÉN ES QUIÉN EN LA ISLA / WHO’S WHO IN THE ISLAND? /WER IST WER AUF DER INSEL?

FMHOY - Fuerteventura

Was für Projekte?

FMHOY - Silvia Comeche

August is the absolute holiday month. This is themonth when most families can enjoy a few days withthe children, those young privileged ones who, by then, have consumed most of their school holidays thatstarted in June (in Spain).

Summer reaches its peak and it is time to enjoyourselves with the whole family. Many families willtravel, but in those times of crisis, quite a few will haveto re-think their holidays and include in their planningthe best leisure activities that the island has to offer.

Fuerteventura is an endless source of resources andadventures. It was recently declared Biosphere Reser-ve by UNESCO and the tranquil island is ideal fordiscovery trips with the children on its numerous andsurprising routes. Immense beaches, beautiful littlecoastal villages and natural protected areas are someof the options available for interesting excursions. AsUNESCO pointed out, Fuerteventura possesses «a widerange of ecosystems that vary from desert and semi-

desert areas to coastal and marine habitats that arepopulated by deep-sea species». This is more thanenough reasons to take advantage of a few days ofholidays and spend them rediscovering the island andteach children important values such as respectingthe environment.

AYUNTAMIENTOSBut we are not alone when it comes to planning

children’s holidays. Ayuntamientos offer a wide rangeof children activities that range from classic summerschool to sports’ activities. Nautical sports take mainstage with canoeing, surfing, kite boarding, sailing …Many activities are available to get children to enjoy

Spending August with the family

the ocean and learn how to surf safely or to fly a kite.Ayuntamientos can provide all the information aboutage requirements, dates and prices of each school.

Although the ocean is the main focus during thesummer season, there are always more classicaloptions such as beach volley or swimming at munici-pal swimming pools.

Furthermore it is recommended to keep an eye onthe Ayuntamientos’ websites and find out about theiractivities’ planning, theatre, cinema or musicalprogrammes. According to our preferences and theages of our children there is always a good optionavailable to ensure a fun summer day.

There is no shortage of cultural options either withlibraries that have moved to beaches in some locationsuntil the end of August.

BEACHES AND PARKSIn a place like Fuerteventura, the beach is always

one of the chosen summer activities. Look for a nicelittle place and spend a day at the beach where youcan organise a few activities and innovate a little inyour children’s routine. Despite all this, if children stillask for a special day, it is then time to take them toparks. Theme parks, leisure centres and aqua-parksand some of the options that will make the whole familyhappy. This is a safe bet; an opportunity to be kidsagain and play with them at their level.

But most important of all, it is about dedicating ourtime to the kings of our homes and sharing it with them.Enjoy those moments we don’t get during the yearbecause of work commitments, even if it is just to reada book, go to the park, have a swim in the pool or havelunch in a special place, it is really worth it.

You have been waiting a year for it; August is finallyhere, enjoy it with the family!

VERANO / SUMMER / SOMMER

FMHOY - Silvia Comeche

During the summer season, our daily routinechanges because all the factors that define it duringthe rest of the year are no longer the same. It is allabout heat, holidays, new habits, long days on thebeach and long nights enjoyed amongst friends. It issummer and everything is different.

Our summer eating habits are hardly those we followin autumn, winter or spring. High temperatures makeour body waste liquids and we continuously need tohydrate and refresh ourselves. This is when salads, cold soups and fresh fruits are required as well asplenty of liquids. By combining those elementsrationally we will manage to combat heat and tirednessthrough hydration and good nutrients’ intake.

FRUITS AND VEGETABLESSummer is the ideal season to enjoy a wide variety

of seasonal fruits and vegetables. It is alsorecommended to drink two litres of water daily in orderto stay hydrated and summer fruits are also a way tohydrate ourselves. Furthermore their multipleproperties make it a healthy option in our daily dietthat is low in calories and brings high amounts ofvitamins and fibres.

In August we can enjoy the best summer fruits suchas melons and water melons. Cherries, nectarines, apricots, medlars, or peaches are also some of thefavourite delicious summer fruits.

Furthermore, all types of vegetables help create themost varied salads or cold soups such as gazpacho. Itnow comes in all kinds of versions, from the classicAndalusian gazpacho to the gazpacho that combinestomato with water melon. It is the season of cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, carrots, aubergines, … Great manyvegetables of all colours and flavours that create greatmain courses or side dishes with grilled meat.

Fight the heat, change your eating habits!

SUMMER HABITSAdapting to the summer does not only mean

introducing new food in our diet, it is also aboutchanging our cooking habits. Summer invites us to stayaway from fatty or heavy dishes and go for lighter ones.Classic salads get mixed with pasta or tropical fruitsalads. Meat and fish are grilled or brazed. Soups stay

away from the stove and transform themselves in freshdishes such as cold Vichy soup or melon soup. This isthe time of the year when we should be creative in thekitchen and look for simplicity and the finest flavours.

As for drinks, the large amounts of water we drinkcan be combined with fruit juices that hydrate andbring antioxidants and vitamins. According to the heator our level of dehydration, we can also take salt andmineral drinks and avoid alcohol.

The other summer protagonists are the ice creams, shakes and sorbets. Delicious and refreshing they areincorporated in our daily lives progressively as soonas the temperature heats up. They are a source ofcalcium, fibres, vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates andproteins, ice creams should be consumed withmoderation to combat high temperatures.

FOOD INTOXICATIONSFood intoxications are another aspect that we should

be aware of, as the heat increases the risk. Creamsand sauces are most likely to cause intoxication, themost frequent ones being salmonella andgastroenteritis. Ingesting food that contains toxicsubstances or pathogenic microorganisms is the cau-se of intoxications that manifest themselves asstomach ache, vomiting, fever, or diarrhea.

At home, it is recommended to buy fresh food andlook carefully at expiry dates. Furthermore, we shouldmaintain the cold chain, carefully wash both fruits andvegetables and cook vegetables appropriately.

Eggs are amongst our worst enemies and we shouldtake special care when consuming them. It is notrecommended to eat them raw or keep mayonnaiseor omelette (tortillas) in the fridge for too long.

When eating out, it is fundamental to avoid the mostdangerous dishes such as Russian salad, fish or pies.

FMHOY - Silvia Comeche

Fernando Delgado - Periodista y escritor

Fernando Delgado - Periodista y escritor canario

Fernando Delgado was born in Santa Cruz de Tene-rife in 1947. From the age of 13 years old he startedcollaborating in newspapers in Tenerife such as El Díay La Tarde. He graduated in Philosophy and Literatureand in Science of Information at ComplutenseUniversity in Madrid and was the first director of Radio3. He was also the Manager of general programmesof Radio Exterior de España and part of the board ofdirectors of RTVE and was also director of RNE twice. After various pieces, the publications of Tachero (1973)and Extermino en Lastenia (1980) were the steppingstone in his successful career as a novel writer. Hiswork as journalist and novel writer has received manyawards and even got him the Premio Planeta in 1995with La mirada del otro. For a long while he was theDirector of the programme «A vivir que son dos días»of Cadena Ser, and is still commentator in theprogramme, and he combines this position with thatof collaborator in the newspaper El País andnewspapers of Editorial Prensa Ibérica.

At the moment, Fernando enjoys his latest novel, Deuna vida a otra, that was created from a recurringdream of the author: «For years I wondered what hadbecome of this boy who, halfway through the seventies, one day I saw being taken out of the Canarian youngoffender’s institution where I used to teach, and who, because of his supposed crimes, was transferred to ayoung offender’s institution on Mainland Spain. Almostforty years later I tried to find on the web one of thoseadolescents or anyone who could have told me whathad happened to him. And this is where the novelstarts». It is a novel that is told like this child, who hadnot committed any crime, and went, almost withoutbeing aware of it, from one life to another. A very hardstory that is sweetened by a dose of acid humour thatentertains the reader.

AUTOBIOGRAPHIC ELEMENTSDe una vida a otra is not an autobiography, but a

novel that speaks about identity and destiny. However, the book does include some elements that revealunknown aspects of the Canarian Author’s life. «Mycolleague teachers are very angry with me, because Inever include the fact that I was a teacher in myautobiographic notes. The fact is that I did it bynecessity as it was a way to earn a living» he comments.

«At 17 years of age I was a teacher and it was easierfor me to teach in a young offender’s institution thanteaching in a national school. This experience, that wascompatible with university and the radio, allowed meto live this way». And this is how the real FernandoDelgado saw a boy coming out of a young offender’sinstitution and whose mother had given the state «aperfect boy and had been given back a delinquent».

Fernando Delgado: Journalist and writer

«I am convinced that we are made of bits ofmemories»

CANARIAN LANDSCAPESThe novel describes also the islands’ landscapes,

which are always very present in his work. However,Fernando Delgado insists that despite continuousreferences to Canarian landscapes he lacks roots thatothers have «that must be something that is wrongwith me, because I am have roots. In fact I amconvinced that we are made of bits of memories».However, some say that people are made from theirchildhood and regarding this statement, the authorsays «my childhood took place here and this is whywhen I use those elements they come from mymemories, we would be nothing without them, I don’tuse this as an element of patriotic fidelity but more asfidelity to myself and my landscape».

Despite living in Faura in the province of Valencia, the journalist and writer has never forgotten hischildhood years spent in the Canaries, an era markedby Franco’s regime which is described in the book.Fernando Delgado relates the protagonist’s childhoodbefore arriving at the institution and takes advantageof this part to describe Canarian children’s childhood«in the grey world of Franco’s regime that wasilluminated by the voices of women». Because, as he

recalls, «I was brought up by women and my childhoodis full of their voices. Fathers used to talk very little athome, they did not express themselves; women, however, used to comment on everything they did, theytalked and sung». Canarian children of those days aredescribed in this story through their lives, their games, etc. Speaking of games, Fernando admits that «he wasa strange child who used to play to be a priest. Withother children we used to play games of war andbattles, but confessing was good fun».

In the context of this era, he also makes referencesto the world of abuse and harassment that hewitnessed himself. «The institution where I worked wasan inhospitable place and boys were not able to getcomfort neither from their companions or guards norfrom management. Children used to confide in theyoung teacher and the social worker. We becamesuspects and an enquiry was done because I did notused to fail any children».

Those are a few brushstrokes of the landscape of acountry submitted to Franco’s regime. Now, many yearslater, Fernando is sorry to see that in the latest surveysfrom the Ombudsman about children’s facilities it appearsthat «similar events still occur while we are in a democracy».

ARTE Y CULTURA / ART AND CULTURE / KUNST UND KULTURFernando Delgado: Journalist und Schriftsteller

FMHOY - Silvia Comeche

AUTOBIOGRAPHISCHE ELEMENTEDe una vida a otra ist keine Autobiographie sondern

You surely already know Fuerteventura’s sunnyweather and its beautiful beaches, but do you reallyknow Fuerteventura? What do you know of itscustoms, traditions, agriculture, livestock farming, traditional architecture, etc? In a word, what do youknow about its rural lifestyle?

In order to find out more about those subjectsand increase visitors’ knowledge about the island, rural tourism was created a little while back. It is a

very different way of enjoying holidays in Fuerteven-tura and we aim to learn a lot more about it throughthis interview with José Santana and MagdalenaLópez. Can you explain what agro-tourism is and whatmakes it different from other types of tourism?

It is about having the opportunity to live in thecountryside, in the peace and quiet that itrepresents and with absolute freedom to wonderaround and feel at home. What does this type of tourism offer tourists?

It offers different activities according to whatpeople look for. There are differences between ru-ral hotel and rural home and in order to highlightthose differences we have called our facilities «Agro-turismo La Gayria», which is what rural tourism iscalled in Italy. Agro-tourism or countryside ruralhome mean nature tourism, where visitors are awayfrom mass tourism and in contact with agriculture, livestock farming, the surrounding landscape, etc.And at the same time it offers all the required faci-lities such as a swimming pool, bread oven, barbecue area where visitors can cook theirfavourite dishes or get their breakfast eggs direct

José Santana and Magdalena López – Owners of Agro-tourism La Gayria

«Here you can get your breakfast eggsdirect from the hen house»

from the hen house and prepare them inside theirfully fitted independent accommodation, where theycan open their windows on the countryside and theauthentic lifestyle of the island’s habitants.

Furthermore, if they wish they can participate infarming activities, see how to sow a field, or harvest

according to the season, round up goats, etc. andtaste the local fruits of the season. What other alternatives does Agro-tourism LaGayria offer visitors to enjoy their holidays?

There are many activities, such as hiking, visit thenatural monument of the Gayria valley, go cycling, horse riding or ride our indigenous donkeys (thatare in danger of extinction), visit the architecturalroutes, the mill of Tiscamanita, the gastronomicroutes, the traditional and handcraft workshops, such as cheese farms, etc. Those are all availableaccording to their preferences.

Which type of tourists look for this type oftourism?

They tend to be Italian mainly then Spanish; wetend to welcome couples or families from main citiessuch as Barcelona and Madrid and then French andGerman tourists. We also welcome families from

other islands and curiously many people from Puer-to del Rosario who come and spend their weekendstogether with their children or grandchildren or forsome special occasion. Those people are looking fora different, quiet and natural lifestyle or wish to showyoung ones another way of life which is less hectic.Curiously this type of tourism is better known onother islands such as La Palma...

That is true, what happens is that Fuerteventurais mostly known for sun and beach tourism andhasn’t diversified its tourism offer as they have doneon other islands. We have a motto that says «Fuer-teventura is more than sun and beaches, it alsooffers rural tourism».Do you have other rural homes?

Yes, in addition to those three in Tiscamanita, wehave four in Tuineje. The houses of Tuineje areequipped so that they can accommodate disabledpersons. Is the cleaning and bedding change included?

We provide the service that the client requires, ofcourse including changes of bedding and towels, but as for the cleaning it depends on visitors wishes. We can see that the houses include all modernfacilities but without loosing the ambiance ofold homes where the walls, furniture, interiorand exterior decorating have kept the feel ofpast times.

Yes, we made sure that coarse farming traditionsare part of the decoration, mainly to keep that ruralhome aspect. Of course we want to emphasise onthe fact that we are pioneers in setting up agro-tourism facilities in Fuerteventura and in theCanaries in order to differentiate us from other ru-ral offers.

SALUD Y BELLEZA / HEALTH & BEAUTY/ GESUNDHEIT UND SCHÖNHEIT

FMHOY - Marta Burgués

Plastic surgery is no longer a passing trend and hassettled in Spain, which is now at the top of the list forthis type of surgery. Rhynoplasty or nose surgery andbreast augmentation are the most popular surgeries.

With 300.000 interventions per year, Spain is theEuropean country that practises the largest amountof surgeries. This figure puts Spain at the top of thelist with a 15% annual increase. It is recommendedthat before changing their appearance, people shouldbe absolutely sure of what they want and choose aprofessional centre that is fully licensed with variouskinds of specialists.

ABOUT THE NOSEAmongst the most popular types of plastic surgery,

rhynoplasty or nose surgery is, behind breastaugmentation, the most demanded by patients in

clinics and hospitals that provide this type of surgeries. We all want a small, enviable, desirable nose but thatlooks as natural as possible. This is the messagepassed on by the Spanish Plastic, Correcting andAesthetic Surgery Association («SECPRE») that definesrhynoplasty in order to correct birth or traumadeformities and to treat respiratory problems.

According to SECPRE a few factors have to be takeninto account before undergoing rhynoplasty. «Idealcandidates for rhynoplasty are people who are looking

Plastic surgery: appearance change?

for an improvement in their appearance, not absoluteperfection».

AECEP, The Spanish Association of Aesthetic andPlastic Surgery, claims that rhynoplasty is a «highlypersonal procedure as there are many differencesregarding people’s face shape, nose structure, skintype, etc. As a consequence, patients have their ownnecessities and require an individual type of surgery.

PERFECT BREASTSBreast augmentation, also known as augmentation

mammoplasty, is a surgery that aims to improve thesize and shape of women’s breasts. Nowadays thereare various legal types of breast implants.

All implants are made of a silicon pouch that cancontain silicon gel, saline implants or cohesive siliconegel. There are two shapes available: the classic shapeis round, and the anatomical or teardrop shape is moresimilar to a breast and brings more perfect aestheticresults.

GOOD PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL HEALTHIn order to undergo plastic surgery, the person must

be both physically and psychologically healthy. Thesurgeon will carry out extensive tests of the problem

area and will speak with the patient about the desiredsurgery and results and about their self-confidence.From this point, the surgeon will advise the patient if itis worth carrying out the surgery, which should only becarried out on people over 18 years of age, as one ofthe requirements.

HAIR REPLACEMENT SURGERY;A PERMANENT SOLUTION

Hair replacement surgery is the most popular surgeryamongst male patients. The most satisfactory techniqueas far as aesthetic result is concerned and as permanenttreatment is the micro-grafting of hair follicles.

This technique, recommended by Clinica Planas ofBarcelona, consists of extracting hair from the patient, from lateral areas or the nape of the neck, which areareas where hair never falls out (geneticallydetermined) and grafting it in affected areas.

Once grafted, after about 3 to 5 months, hair startsto grow at the rate of 1 cm per month, like the rest ofthe hair. This treatment is absolutely pain free and canbe done under local anaesthetic and sedatives; morethan one session may be required according to thegravity of the alopecia.
