2010 Annual Fund CampaignThe Fluvanna SPCA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal welfare agency that provides temporary shelterand care for the communitys homeless dogs and cats until good homes can be found for them. The FSPCA also provides animal pound services to Fluvanna County. A little over one third of ourannual operating budget is funded by the County, but for the bulk of our funding, we rely on fund-raising events, grants, thrift store sales, adoption and boarding fees, and contributions from busi-nesses and individual donors.

These funds are used to provide the animals with food, water, and medical treatment for a vari-ety of health conditions such as heartworm, ringworm, mange, respiratory illnesses, and bonefractures, in addition to routine vet exams, vaccinations, and spay/neuter surgeries. Funds areused to purchase equipment and supplies, maintain the building, grounds, and a vehicle for trans-ports, and to compensate a small group of hard-working staff who are very dedicated to takinggood care of the animals. All of this was accomplished on a shoestring budget of approximately$200,000 - less than $200 per animal!

Last year, nearly 1,000 cats and dogs were cared for at the Fluvanna SPCA. One hundred fiftywere happily reunited with their owners while 370 were adopted by new families. One hundredsixty-eight were transferred to other animal rescue organizations that also provide adoption ser-vices. Our increased focus on placing animals in forever homes helps to move us closer to ourgoal of being a no-kill shelter.

How you can help:Share our commitment to provide a second chance and a brighter future to the communitys ani-mals in need by donating to the FSPCA Annual Fund. Every tax-deductible gift, no matter howsmall or big, is important. We now have the ability to process automatic, recurring monthlycredit card donations, in addition to one-time donations. You may pledge your ongoing support of

$10, $20, or more per month by visiting our website www.fspca.organd clicking on Donate. For questions about our Annual Fund program, please contact [email protected].

Mothers of the YearWhen you think of great mothers in history, Ethel Kennedy, Princess Dianaand Mother Teresa come to mind. Add Susie Q and Clara to that list.Theyre not only taking care of their kittens, but both Moms are fosteringkittens from other litters. The two orphan kittens would have been bottlefed, but Susie Q and Clara have stepped up to the challenge. It just goes toshow how much we humans can learn from our four-legged friends aboutcompassion and care for others. Stop by the shelter today to visit these in-credible Moms and their adorable kittens.

Small Gifts DO Make a Difference!Six-year-old John Grebe can teach us all about giving and com-passion. His family attended our recent pancake breakfasthosted by Our Lady of Peace Retirement Community. Before

his family left for the event, John asked to take money fromhis piggy bank. John selected 2 crumbled dollar bills and in hisinnocent handwriting wrote, For the animals- Love John.

His gift may seem insignificant to some, but it is a reminderthat even the smallest donation can have a large impact.Johns generosity and compassion shows that all of us giving alittle, whether it be a financial donation, fostering a litter ofkittens, or simply taking a dog for a walk on your lunch break,

makes an impact. Please give back to the four-legged members of our community volunteer,

    donate, and care!

to Kim Bellone of Sir Speedy for her invaluable assistance with free printing of our newsletters,

    event flyers, and forms.

to Plants N Things for donating the two potted plants currently in front of the building.

to Fork Union Animal Clinic for partnering with us for events and providing discounted medical

    services for our animals.

to Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA for providing discount spay/neuter services.

to Calvin Bragg for arranging for VDOT to deliver mulch.

to Dr. Jim Starkey for volunteering his time to assess the medical needs

of our residents and assisting us with our rabies clinic.

    Thank You...

    The kittens!

Jeremys story seemed destined for a sad ending until dedi-cated volunteers and staff entered the picture. Jeremy is a 2-year-old German shepherd who was diagnosed with severe

Dedicated volunteers and staff didnt give up on Jeremy. Theyare currently raising funds to help pay for Jeremys treatment.Once its completed, he will go to a forever home with his newfamily in Fluvanna County. If you would like to help contributeto the Save Jeremy fund, please visit www.fspca.org and do-

    nate to the medical fund.
