Welcome Frontier High School Principal ~ Mr. Daniel Charland By Frontier InFlight writers, 9th graders, Marissa Zoerb and Samantha McLaughlin

Frontier High School has a new principal who started in May 2017 after a year search. We sat with him to learn some things about who he is. Mr. Charland is coming to Frontier with a lot of experience in the field of education and a strong dedication for success. As writers for Inflight, the school newspaper, we were thrilled to have the opportunity to sit and talk with Mr. Charland so the district can learn about who he is and what he brings to this district, and we walked away from this meeting feeling very good about what lies ahead for us in our future years here at the high school.

We started off by asking if he always knew he wanted to go into education. He replied with, “I’ve always known that I wanted to work with kids in some capacity. It wasn’t until later in college that I learned I wanted to go into education. In high school I always thought working with kids, perhaps in school psychology, adoles-cent psychology, psychiatry was interesting. After taking education courses at Fredonia, I realized education was a great path.”

Since he mentioned taking courses at Fredonia, it prompted the question of where he went to college. He informed us that, “My undergraduate degrees are in music education and music performance. I then received a Master’s degree in music education from Boston University. Then I received a Master’s degree in educational administration from University of Buffalo.”

Mr. Charland had a lot of different positions over the years, we asked how he worked his way up to being principal, and what jobs he had before. He explained that, “The last seven years I’ve spent as an assistant principal in the Kenmore-Tonawanda school district. I’ve worked at Franklin Middle School. I also worked at Kenmore East High School and Kenmore West High School.”

To learn more about his personal life, we asked about his family. “I have a wife, Courtney who is also a teacher. She teaches a multi-age classroom in Buffalo Public schools. I have three boys, Camden, and Carter and Colton. They’re six, five, and two respectively. Camden is in kindergarten and Carter is going to be in kindergarten next year.”

We also asked if he has any pets, to which he replied, “We do, we have a dog named Rosie and two fish, Bombster and Chippy. The boys named them.”

Inflight thinks it’s important that you know about what he has in the works for Frontier, so we asked about what he thinks he’s bringing to the high school. His response was, “I think one of the things I bring to Frontier is a student-centered philosophy. Everything, all decisions, all aspects of the building have to center around student success. I am very enthusiastic and passionate about coming to work every day and leaving the job a little bit better that day than I found it. My experiences have been working in buildings with high levels of school spirit, students are proud where they’re receiving their education. That’s something I want to work hard at increasing and promoting here at Frontier. Obviously, we have some great school spirit as it is, but we can always grow, and get better at the things we’re already doing well. I think enthusiasm, passion, honesty, and integrity are all things I can bring to the high school.”

While we understand that he can’t give us too many details, we asked him what his plans are for the upcoming year. “Plans for the upcoming year?. I came in at the end of the year where people are leaving as I’m starting. That’s not really an opportunity for anyone to really know me yet. Starting in September, we’re really, especially the students, starting from scratch. Taking the time out of my schedule and taking my evenings to dedicate to the school and community is something that is important to me. People can get to know me, and I can get to know them and we’ll make decisions from there,” he explained.

It is evident that Mr. Charland is passionate about his job and cares about the outcome of students. It should be interesting what ideas and plans he has for the high school when we return in September. Inflight school newspaper was proud to have the opportunity of interviewing and getting to know a little bit about our new principal, Mr. Charland.

Transportation News

My Thoughts on My First Year Driving a Frontier School BusBy Mary Ludlow, 1st year bus driver

When I look back to September, many things come to mind. I remember the fear of actually driving the bus, looking in the mirror and imagining all those seats filled with children. I remember how encouraging my bosses were and especially the kindness of of the other drivers. I am surprised by how quickly I became attached to the students I drive and the parents I talk to everyday.

I enjoy the many challenges that bus drivers face every day, everything from the weather conditions to the never ending list of complaints from my elementary students. When I see all of our Frontier buses pulling in at the end of the day, I can’t help but feel a real sense of pride knowing what an important job we all have and how well we manage to get it done. I’m looking forward to the next school year and all the challenges it will bring.

Most Memorable Experience: Concert Choir was asked to sing at the remembrance service our school held for the victims of the Parkland shooting. We sang “Requiem”, a song originally written for the victims of a tsunami. To have the opportunity to express the tragedy, hurt and hope every person at the assembly felt, and to do that through music and with my “music family” was the most amazing moment in my high school career.

Music can do a number of things, and that day, I think it allowed all of us to grieve over the tragedy of this horrific event and remind us there is always hope. I feel honored that I was afforded the opportunity to be a part of this wonderful moment.

Smart Living Fair-Smart Ways to Lead The annual PTSA sponsored Frontier High School Smart Living Fair is an event that brings members from the community, faculty, and staff together to show the student body that there are numerous ways to lead a healthy life. This year’s fair had activities to show students how to keep healthy physically, mentally and fiscally. Students could compete in a physical challenge or learn basics of self-defense, how to knit to relax, pick up a book in the reading corner, learn about how to be a lifelong blood/organ donor or grab some cash in the money booth and balance a budget as well as many other activities. The event is a student body favorite each year and it changes and evolves each year but always maintains the message of “smart ways to lead a healthy lifestyle.”

Greater Buffalo Youth Orchestra

Standing in front of St. Vitus Cathedral at Prague Castle are left to right Noah Webster, percussion; GBYO Music Director Ansgarius Aylward, Madelyn Stoklosa, trombone; Lauryn Koeppel, viola and Jessica Jonczyk, cello.

Four Frontier High School mu-sicians were part of the Great-er Buffalo Youth Orchestra’s (GBYO) 2018 concert tour of Austria and the Czech Republic in late Spring this year. The Greater Buffalo Youth Orches-tras make possible a unique performance opportunity for talented young Western New York musicians. The GBYO and GBYSO offer these musicians a chance to experience the disci-pline and rewards of preparing and performing advanced rep-ertoires; the Foundation exists to facilitate this experience for young people.

The GBYO has successfully completed international tours in Italy, Spain, Austria and Prague, and regional tours to Rochester, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Toronto, Baltimore and Boston.

12th Anniversary of Frontier Ecology Club’s Elementary School ProjectBy Cece Robertson, grade 12

Eleven years ago, on April 20, 2007, the Frontier High School Ecology Club launched a campaign to promote the idea of a sustainable Earth and has continued to do so every year since. The dedicated students, led by an equally enthusiastic and proactive advisor, Ms. Paula Malesa, have been visiting Frontier district elementary schools with the goal of teaching the students the importance of trees and protecting the natural world around us and how they can make a positive difference.

Sometimes it can be difficult for children, and even some adults, to truly appreciate our environment. There is so much we need to implement for a sustainable and healthy Earth. So, in order to educate them, the high school students decided that an interactive and creative approach was the

way to go. In 2007, the Ecology Club gave each student, teacher and support staff member their very own tree: a river birch sapling. They were able to do so at no cost to the recipients, due to Eco club’s amazing fundraising efforts.

The hope is to show kids how good it feels to make a difference, and how it can also be fun! After the presentation, kids were encouraged to plant and take care of their own tree and to share the environmental message with their families, friends, and the world!

Without trees, the world we have come to know and love would be unrecognizable. The Ecology club members know that it is the children of today who will make the decisions of tomorrow. It is their hope that

this project and its message will stay with the Frontier elementary students for the rest of their lives, that they will continue to spread that message, and will make the world a greener and better place for all. Don’t just hug a tree; plant one!

Big Tree Enjoys Arbor Day TraditionFrontier High School Ecology Club members helped distribute pine, black cherry and tulip tree saplings during the 12th annual Arbor Day campaign at Big Tree Elementary. Under the direction of High School Advisor Ms. Paula Malesa, Club members visited the classrooms giving demonstrations on to properly plant and care for their Arbor Day sapling. Big Tree students enthusiastically answered questions regarding the benefits of having trees in our community, from releasing oxygen to providing fresh fruit to eat.

Each year the Ecology Club visit one of the elementary buildings. This year, over 700 trees were distributed on Arbor Day, April 27. To date, over 9,000 trees have been donated in the past 12 years.

You’re a grand old flag,

You’re a high flying flag

And forever in peace may you wave.~ George M. Cohan

Blasdell Elementary proudly participated in their annual Flag Day celebration on June 14. How did June 14 get chosen as the day to celebrate our flag?

A resolution was signed by America’s brand new Congress on June 14, 1777, that finalized the flag’s design and President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed June 14 as Flag Day in 1916. In 1949, following the end of the war, Congress officially made June 14 National Flag Day.

All this was conveyed by none other than George Washington and Betsy Ross, portrayed by 5th graders Izaiah Pirro and Morgan Osborne.

Sweet Blasdell Rocks! As you walk through the village of Blasdell, don’t be surprised if you find some colorful, creative rocks along the way. These beautiful creations were made by the third, fourth and fifth grade students from Blasdell Elementary School. As part of the “Sweet Blasdell Rocks” project, these rocks (donated by Gernatt’s, Boston NY) were designed and painted by the students and scattered throughout the village as a way to spread good wishes and happy thoughts to the village residents. If you are lucky enough to find one, you may enjoy its message and design for a while and then replace it somewhere else for another person to find and enjoy, or you can simply keep it to enjoy forever! The Pre-K, kindergarten, first and second grade students from Blasdell Elementary also participated in this special project. Their rocks are part of an inviting design that greets visitors when they arrive at the front entrance of the school. Either way, we hope you get a chance to experience “Sweet Blasdell Rocks”!

As the student body gathered around the flagpole, 5th graders Reginald Hartel from Troop 285 and Student Gov’t president, Nevaeh Adams, assisted Custodian Rick Tomaszewski raising the flag while the student band played the Stars Spangled Banner. With their hands placed over their hearts and dressed in red, white and blue, the students recited the Pledge to Allegiance.

After the band finished their patriotic song selections, the students paraded around the building waving their flags.

Second grade students from Mrs. Pelonero’s class proudly show off their contribution to “Sweet Blasdell Rocks”! Left to right; Madison Baker, Gabriella Incorvaia, Salome Murcia Botina and Muskan Thaper.

Taryn Nurmi from Mrs. Mayle’s 4th grade class, leaves her beautiful rock in the Blasdell Little Free Library drop-off box.

Pinehurst ElementaryA Frontier tradition that brings nostalgia and smiles took place at all the elementary buildings in June. At Pinehurst, the graduating seniors, who had attended Pinehurst were welcomed to the cafeteria where a video played of their 5th grade activities, water bottles with graduating caps on top, snacks and their 5th grade graduation photos awaited them. Then the seniors walked through the halls while the current Pinehurst students clapped and high-fived the seniors as they paraded by.

Tradition Continues!Together we are one! Patty Watson has made it her mission toarrange and photograph groups of people into images that promoteunity and patriotism. She has done over 30 aerial images for local schools and companies. Cloverbank Elementary continues the annual tradition, with this year creating a patriotic dove.

It takes many hours of planning and preparation to successfully complete one of these aerial photos with a big “thank you” to the Woodlawn Volunteer Fire Department for their continuous aerial assistance. Frontier is honored and grateful to be part of an annual patriotic and artistic tradition.

Frontier Visits State Capitol A group of 18 students made up of interested junior and senior members of Frontier High School Student Government along with interested AP United States History students and Student Government Advisor, Mrs. Jean Baker, Principal Daniel Charland, Superintendent Dr. Richard Hughes and Board Member Davis Podkulski made the trek to the State Capitol. Upon arrival the group was greeted by officials from the offices of NY Senator Chris Jacobs and Assemblyman Sean Ryan. The group was given a narrated tour of the Capitol Building then met personally with the representatives where they were able to engage in discussion with them. They indicated that it is a rare thing for students to travel from Western New York to Albany to see State Government in action. The highlight of the day was for the students to sit on the Assembly floor and in the upper level of the Senate where they listened to arguments on the floor and observed voting take place on a large number of bills. Many of the students indicated that they had an interest in pursuing politics as a career path.
