Agency inspector Seamus Cullinan,  pictured, claimed the poachers were more violent than ever – on one occasion dropping a concrete block on to a patrol boat from an overhead bridge. The gures conrm a trend in recent years in which the carnage on Ulster’s roads has been slashed. Fatalities in 2011 were ractionally up on 2010, but that year was itsel by ar the saest ever year, with barely hal the previous lowest.  A total o 59 people died on the province’s roads last year, up rom 55 in the previous 12 months. Prior to these two years, the saest year was 2008 with 107 deaths. One o Britain’s oremost experts on reducing crashes said that while any road death was a tragedy, it was appropriate to hail the progress in reducing atalities in Northern Ireland,  which refected trends across Britain and Ireland.  Andrew Howard, head o road saety at the AA, told the News Letter: “It is wonderul that they are coming down so much.  We have to make sure it keeps alling. The man, who is believed to be in his late 40s, let his home in the Ballymena area at around 2pm on Sunday or what was expected to be a two-hour cycle. Police were alerted when he ailed to return and a search operation was mounted.  An Irish Coastguard helicopter and volunteers rom the Community Rescue Service were involved yesterday and the search is expected to resume this morning. He is understood to be  wearing only normal cycling clothing with no additional equipment or a longer  journey.
