years on our roadsNORTHERN Ireland has hadanother exceptionally sae yearon the roads, with the second
lowest number o road deathsever.The gures conrm a trend
in recent years in which thecarnage on Ulster’s roads hasbeen slashed.
Fatalities in 2011 wereractionally up on 2010, but thatyear was itsel by ar the saestever year, with barely hal the
previous lowest. A total o 59 people died onthe province’s roads last year,
up rom 55 in the previous 12months.
Prior to these two years, thesaest year was 2008 with 107deaths.
One o Britain’s oremostexperts on reducing crashes said
that while any road death wasa tragedy, it was appropriate tohail the progress in reducing
atalities in Northern Ireland, which refected trends acrossBritain and Ireland.
Andrew Howard, head o roadsaety at the AA, told the NewsLetter: “It is wonderul thatthey are coming down so much.
We have to make sure it keepsalling.

VOLUNTEERS have joinedpolice ocers in the searchor a cyclist who went missingin Co Antrim on New Year’sDay.
The man, who is believedto be in his late 40s, let hishome in the Ballymena areaat around 2pm on Sundayor what was expected to be atwo-hour cycle.
Police were alerted when heailed to return and a search
operation was mounted. An Irish Coastguard
helicopter and volunteersrom the Community RescueService were involvedyesterday and the searchis expected to resume thismorning.
He is understood to be wearing only normal cyclingclothing with no additionalequipment or a longer journey.
Searchers were checkingdozens o roads, laneways,ditches and elds over a widearea all day yesterday.
However, as o last night,the cyclist had not beenound.
Fears risefor cyclist
