From the Rector Very Rev. Joseph Tizio, C.Ss.R. Staffed by The Redemptorists This Thursday, November 9th is the 285th anniversary of the founding of our Redemptorist community. The Redemptorists began in a small country village called Scala in 1732. It was there that St. Alphonsus was struck by the poor, uneducated shepherds who were abandoned with no one to teach them the faith or cele- brate the sacraments for them. Alphonsus realized that in Naples and in other large wealthy cities of Italy there more than enough priests. The people were well served but no one wanted to minister to the poor who lived in the country- side. It was there is Scala that Alphonsus heard the call of the Spirit to begin a new religious community, one that would minister to those whom no one else wanted to minister. It was in that poor rural village that the Spirit’s vision for Alphonsus began to become a reality. That vision has captured men for these past 285 years, we Redemp- torist can be found all over the world and we number close to 5,000 worldwide. Unfortunately, here in the United States there has been a sharp decline in the num- ber of vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Fewer and fewer young men and women are being attracted to the priesthood or the religious life. I want to appeal to you today to consider speaking to those whom you think might make a wonderful Re- demptorist priest or brother, invite them to come and speak to one of us to discern the Spirit’s call. We were greatly blessed to have our Redemptorist seminarians ministering and studying here in our parish community. I know that many of you were deeply im- pressed with their devotion and enthusiasm. I am sure that like me some of you miss their presence. Today, I want to remind you that we need you to seek out new men who will continue to live the Redemptorist charism with joy and enthusiasm. MASS INTENTIONS FROM THE RECTOR
