P a g e 1 As I walk the grounds of our beautiful campus, I am so often amazed and thrilled to listen to the manner in which our students understand, engage with and see the world around them. The Year 11 program IGNITE: Ideas with Impact was such an occasion. I saw so many young people look at the problems that our generation has been responsible for, and the creative (and often simple) solutions they can see, that others before them have been blind to. This is such an enlightening and humbling experience and one that I truly delight in. As I have so often said, “If our world is in the hands of our students then there is great hope for our futures.” I would like to take this opportunity to once again thank Alder Constructions for providing the prize money for the winning group of this unique program. I am equally thrilled to announce that the winning group is seriously considering the commencement of this business, with the prize money to be used as seed funding. Establishing a business is fraught with many challenges, pitfalls and difficulties, and so I am delighted to announce that our College lawyers – Corney and Lind Lawyers (in Brisbane) have agreed to provide free legal advice to the students and their families to make this business a reality. Never before have I seen two companies offer such immediate support to enable the dreams of our students to become a reality. This program was not merely an academic exercise, it was indeed a call to action. This is a wonderful and unique program and I thank Alder Constructions and Corney and Lind Lawyers for the strong financial support for our students Imagine graduating from our College with an outstanding OP a QCE and a thriving business ndash such is the range of wonderful opportunities provided and the application of our students School is not simply about passing subjects it is about the experience I believe the AB experience is unique and makes a difference to students of all abilities interests and direction

When we talk about experiences there is a very strong belief that the world-wide technology revolution will bring many new experiences and also solutions to current problems but as our Year 11 students discovered even some of the most novel solutions can bring their own problems and a new range of challenges Such is the world of robotics and artificial intelligence

Thought leaders suggest that a significant number of routine repetitive jobs will disappear in the next 5-10 years and that many industries and sectors will be impacted In fact it has been suggested that only a very small number of roles could not be computerised These have included professions such as surgeons dentists health professionals and those dependent upon human interaction such as counsellors teachers social work and management

In a different study by the McKinsey Global Institute there is a claim that only about 5 of all occupations can be fully automated based upon current technologies These inferences and predictions suggest that while some roles may indeed be replaced by new technologies future technologies may indeed have a far greater impact on re-defining the workplace work practices and processes thereby enabling workers to focus on interaction engagement decision-making and less time on routine tasks

These technologies will continue to enter the field of education bringing new opportunities and the development of new industries The question we should have as educators and parents is how do we prepare our children for this future given that there is uncertainty about such opportunities and the potential changes Researchers and thought-leaders seem unanimous in their response to such a question ndash our students as they prepare for the future workforce and to be future citizens need to be adaptable flexible creative problem-solvers excellent in communication collaborative and be willing to review seek ongoing improvement and cope with change

This brings new challenges to our education systems Sadly the Australian education system is not leading in this area and could arguably be designated as quite deficient

Our College has recognised this need some years ago and has developed a strong program of contemporary learning skills to provide the very skillset our future citizens will need It is no longer enough to simply get a good result in an academic program but rather to also acquire and develop a new range of skills These essential skills are embedded in every teaching program from Prep through to Year 12 at our College We believe these to be essential for our young people and have developed strong curriculum practices around these

Interestingly one aspect that seems to be missing from the research is the development of self through leadership moral principles and a strong sense of personal values These essential human qualities are a clear distinction between man and machine and if we are to use future technologies for the better if we are going to maximise opportunity for all if we are going to enable future citizens to contribute positively to society and indeed promote the essence of life itself (and human engagement) then such personal attributes have never been more important

For many years I have argued that it is the quality of human relationships that are the most important and defining feature of a school With a glimpse into the future now available to us I would now argue that the quality of human relationships will be the most important and defining feature of future society ndash one in which we can speak of a life well-lived and one in which we utilise our collective wisdom and the available technologies to not only sustain life but to improve the quality of our existence and that of our environment on this fragile planet This is our greatest challenge and our greatest opportunity Brian Grimes Principal

Last week the College hosted two enjoyable information and social evenings on Wednesday (Senior School) and Thursday (Junior School) Parents had the opportunity to meet with class or tutor teachers of their children to become better informed on a range of practices across the College Dr Judith Locke was on hand again to reinforce many of these through her presentations and to pass on advice regarding the challenges of modern parenting while providing tips for developing independence and resilience in our children These occasions provide wonderful opportunities for parents and staff to build relationships and further develop our community feel Thank you to all staff and parents in attendance for creating such positive evenings Mr Tim Grosser Director of Operations and Planning

Our Senior Induction is an important event in our College calendar signifying the transition of our Year 12 cohort into their final year at the College and formally acknowledging them as leaders of our student body

On Friday 9 February the annual ceremony took place in the DMPC The College community gathered to witness Board Chair Mr David Tanner Members of the Board and Principal Mr Brian Grimes presenting our Year 12 students with their Senior badges

In his Principalrsquos address Mr Grimes described the four principles that underpin leadership and encouraged the Seniors of 2018 to ask themselves three questions to aid them on their leadership journey throughout the year Who am I Where do I fit in How might I best serve others

After our newly inducted College Captain Rachel Hoch led her peers in the Senior Pledge each student received their badge and signed the Senior Register This register is the same one that all Year 12 students have signed at their Senior Induction Ceremony since the inception of our College and represents each studentrsquos acknowledgement of the duties and responsibilities they agree to undertake as a member of the Senior cohort

Tears began to flow as the Year 2 Choir performed In my Heart by Ian Ross Williams conducted by Rachel Newcombe and accompanied by Elise Immanuel as the Year 12 cohort remembered singing the very same song when they were in Year 2

In her College Captainrsquos address Rachel reminded us of the importance of a sense of community participation and loyalty across our entire College and inspired passion and spirit when announcing the sole initiative for the Class of 2018 ndash AB Positive

In response Year 11 student Grace Murphy offered words of encouragement and support assuring our Seniors that the entire community is behind them as they strive to achieve the very best possible this year Year 6 student Sarah Reimer reminded our Seniors of the continual support and guidance they offer to younger students and how they always live up to the College motto of Excellence Care and Commitment On behalf of the Junior School Sarah delivered the following message ldquoAs you work towards the end of your final year at AB Paterson College work hard for what you want to achieve and know that we will all carry many memories from your time here with us not just as role models and leaders but as friends On behalf of the Junior school I welcome you as the College Leaders of 2018 We wish you every success for the coming year and journey aheadrdquo On behalf of our College community we wish Year 12s the very best on their journey this year Charlotte Brook Dean of Senior School

On Tuesday night Principal Brian Grimes hosted the AB Paterson College Leaders and House Captains dinner at Ioesco Restaurant at Sanctuary Cove The annual dinner is an opportunity for our Student Leaders to share dinner and network with key staff as they embark on their leadership journey The food was exceptional the ideas exciting and the debate lively

Year 12 Student Alexandra Legassick shares her challenging personal journey while on exchange to Canada from culture shock to a liberating sense of independence

At the beginning of November 2017 I embarked on a life changing journey having decided to act on my childhood dream of going on a student exchange for three months to Canada

I knew that it was a huge decision and ndash in all honesty ndash it was the hardest thing I have ever done But it was also the best thing Irsquove ever done (so far) I know it might sound cheesy but I have grown so much and have been inspired to do things that I wouldnrsquot have done if I hadnrsquot done the exchange

Before I left I was advised not to set broad goals for myself Goals such as lsquoI aim to make lots of friendsrsquo or lsquoI aim for a successful exchangersquo would be unreasonable and harder to achieve than you might think It is better to make specific goals ones that would be reasonable to achieve each week for example It is when those specific goals are achieved that the exchange is a success I came to realise this advice was extremely valuable

I experienced Culture Shock ndash a very common occurrence for

people on an exchange ndash and felt overwhelmed and disoriented

in a different environment

Leaving my home my family and my friends for the longest time I

had ever been away and moving into a foreign environment with

people I had never met was hard But sure enough it started to

get a lot easier after I adjusted to the differences settled into my

family life and made some friends The feeling I had when I knew

that I was settled was truly amazing I felt so independent and

proud of myself for doing something like this I thought lsquoI am in

Canada by myself I can do anythingrsquo

The small town where I was placed was the

complete opposite to what I was used to

The closest shopping centre was an hour

away by car and you would have to walk for

a minute to reach my neighbours on either

side I was in the middle of nowhere It was

beautiful and calm and the rows of pine

trees on the sides of the roads were

eventually covered in snow and it looked

like a postcard

I went to a public school made up largely of farming families It appeared to me to have no rules apart from lsquono hats insidersquo During class students called restaurants to deliver lunch to school It took a lot of getting used to but I soon started to laugh at the things that surprised me at first and I really embraced an environment so different to AB Paterson College I kept a journal and it is so interesting to go back and read it and to see how much I changed over the course of the exchange The time seemed to fly by and I soon had to say goodbye to family and friends some of whom I may never see again The departure was bittersweet because I was excited to see my friends and family in Australia but sad to leave my life in Canada I am so thankful for this experience because now I know I can do things that I didnrsquot think I could I now have a home away from home Alexandra Legassick Year 12 Student

Super Scientist Sidney Hooker from Science on the Go engaged Year 4 students with an amazing science show last week Mr Hooker experimented with different materials and tested their properties As you can see from the pictures there were some mind-blowing moments

ldquoI loved see how solids liquids and gases can react very differently in different environmentsrdquoSeeret Arora - Year 4

ldquoMy favourite part of the show was watching balloons a tennis ball and a barbie doll freeze when put in an esky of liquid nitrogen Mr Hooker then dropped them on the floor and we saw them breakrdquo Ollie Briggs - Year 4

ldquoThe show was so cool I canrsquot wait for my turn to test and make a lunch boxrdquo Riley Thompson ndash Year 4
