Each class, from Year 1 – 6, has two councillors on the Student Council which meets throughout the term to develop new ideas, discuss issues and provide solutions to problems. Students are very adept at presenting their ideas on behalf of their class but also develop wonderful real life skills in asking clarifying questions, resolving problems, building on to the ideas of others, active listening and developing an understanding of correct meeting protocols. Children in Year 6 also have the opportunity to be Student Representatives who lead the student population throughout the year and take on a variety of leadership roles representing the school. It is important that we teach our children these skills explicitly whilst they are young, so that they will have the opportunity to build upon them at high school and then later in life. more confident and enthusiastic towards participating in sports beyond the school and hopefully throughout their lives. Wattle Grove Primary School has had a very dynamic Physical Education Programme for many years and this year is no exception. This term, the focus is on the development of athletic skills in readiness for our Faction Sports Carnivals on

Wednesday, 2 September (Jumps/Throws – morning followed by the Kindy/Pre-primary Carnival in the afternoon) and the Faction Carnival (Years K- 6) on Friday, 4 September. We are looking forward to these events and hope to see you all there.

Learning how to spell words is one of the most useful lifelong skills. It builds the basic foundation that all children will need throughout their education and life in general. Learning how to spell is very important for other basic skills, including writing and reading. Children should be able to read a word before they attempt to spell the word. Here are some ideas to help with spelling at home: Encourage children to ‘have a go’ at spelling a new word - Making a first attempt is good for confidence, and it can reinforce spelling patterns and help identify problem areas. Make sure children remember to use their phonics as they try to spell a word - Encourage children to break the word they want to spell into its individual sounds and then try to match those sounds to the letters of the alphabet. Ask children to write down the words that they need to remember how to spell - The physical act of writing the words by hand helps to anchor the spelling in children’s memories and encourages them to think about the letters that represent the sounds in the word. You just don’t get the same benefits if children type the words into a PC or tablet. Making silly sentences can be great fun - Challenge your child to write a silly sentence, including as many of the words on their spelling list as possible. For example, your child may have to learn ‘room, took, hoop, foot, book’. They could make up a silly sentence such as ‘The boy took his book across the room but got his foot caught in a hoop’. Again they could draw illustrations to go with the sentences. Hidden words is a game that you can prepare yourself - Write the words on your child ’s spelling list, hidden in a series of letters. Now that they are hidden, ask your child to find them.

For example: Sfhplayknc - play qrubitpdh – bit nvzbikejfa – bike Spelling practice should always be supervised. This will ensure that your child is getting the most out of an activity. Set aside some time every evening to do a quick spelling practice. Even if it’s just ten minutes. If your child is overwhelmed by the number of words, then break the list into chunks and only try a few at a time. Year 3 students have been taking part in the Spelling Bee competition this week. It has been wonderful to see the dedication and hard work they have demonstrated. There have been some extremely tricky words for the students to spell and I have been so proud of their efforts. The final round will take place in Week 6. Good luck to all students taking part.

Friday of Week 4 saw the students from Rooms 14, 15 and 23 host the Senior Assembly. With a theme of 'Poetry', they got the chance to perform two poems in front of parents, students and staff, as well as hosting duties involving speakers from each class. The students worked so hard to prepare, including learning their speaking parts, remembering poems, songs and actions and completing poems for the WOW Writing Boards. All the students performed and spoke very well, and their excitement was tangible as they thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to perform for everyone. Congratulations to these students who were presented with Merit Certificates at assembly on 14th August 2020: Year 2/3 Rm 14 Ashdon, Jefrin, Frida Year 3 Rm 15 Thanuja, Ritaaz Year 3 Rm 23 Sonia, Kabilan, Dhwaj Year 3/4 Rm 25 Anna, Hrithikeshwar, Christian Year 4 Rm 13 Jacob, Tahsan, Chloe Year 4 Room 26 Philip, Joshua, Liora, Taylor Year 4 Room 29 Dibbo, Elly-Lee, Anas, Asher Year 4/5 Room 8 Wesley, Annabelle, Year 5 Room 12 Parth, Isam, Natalia, Tylah Year 5 Rm 18 Canaan, Tessa, Krissy, Sarah Year 5 Rm 27 Gazal, Roentgen, Ella-Grace, Chanelle Year 4/5/6 Rm 22 Amelia, Alysha, Rajbir, Jiani Year 6 Room 11 Nad, Harrison, Akash, Grace Year 6 Room 17 Trent, Layla, Sohail, Malak Year 6 Room 31 Antony, Kayden, Ruia, Isabelle Sports Award Connor, Legacy, Peyton Senior Sports Award Neve LOTE Award Jashwanth, Srihari, Joshua, Misbah Science Award Samantha, Osman Art Award Room 17 Values Award Maddison, Arjun

As we come into a change of season and school uniform attire, all children must be in school uniform in accordance with the School Dress Code Policy. As a school, we all work very hard to ensure that our school uniform is maintained throughout each room of the school. The School Board awards the School Uniform Award to the class with the best representation of the school’s uniform. Parents are asked to please ensure that only dark green and yellow school colours are worn. Dark green scarves, gloves and leggings (only with a skirt) may also be worn at school. No jewellery is to be worn other than a watch, earrings –sleepers or studs, and jewellery of religious or cultural significance. Hair must be neat and out of children’s eyes with hair below shoulder length tied up. No cosmetics are to be worn. The School Dress code:

Fosters and enhances the public image of the school

Ensures students are safely and appropriately dressed for specific school activities

Encourages equality among students

Assists building school and team spirit

Is cost effective for all parents.

Financial support provided by parents has always played an important role in the provision of resources and the school’s capacity to add value to children’s learning experiences. For example, parent voluntary contributions assist schools to provide resources for all classes and can include items such as reading books, puzzles and blocks for the littles ones, maths equipment, paint and craft supplies, dictionaries, atlases, iPads, maths and sports equipment. Each year the School Board sets the contribution amount and for 2020 the schedule is:

Thank you to the many parents who have already paid their school contributions this year. It makes a significant difference and is greatly appreciated.

2 children $100.00

The students have been busy practising their skills at Faction Training during lunchtimes over the last couple of weeks, under the guidance of their faction captains and vice captains. They have been working on Leader Ball, Pass Ball, Circle Ball, running and a new game, Zig Zag Relay, which will replace Tunnel Ball. Classes have also been practising these team games each morning, during Daily Fitness. Faction Teachers have been conducting run-offs, to select the best competitors for the running events. Our Faction Carnival will be held in Week Seven, weather permitting. The jumps, throws and distance races will be held on Wednesday, September 2. The K-P Tabloid Carnival will commence after lunch on this day, as well. The main carnival will be held on Friday, September 4. Parents will be advised of the format for the 2020 Faction Carnival closer to the event, as social distancing may necessitate some changes from previous years.

Olivia Hello, my name is Olivia B and I am currently 11 years old. I am in Room 11 with Mrs Lowther and I have been at Wattle Grove Primary School since Kindy (2013). My mum comes from Ireland. I was born in Australia as were my dad and my brother. I only have one sibling. The only hobby I do out of school is Gymnastics. I go three times a week and I’m currently in Star 4. I also like to play on my trampoline. The things I like about Wattle Grove is that we do Literacy Pro and we get certificates for reading when you reach a certain point. I am very friendly to all students and I’m helpful. We have nice, clean school grounds and we always love to clean. I always give 120% into ALL the work I do. I also like how we have fundraisers and dress up days. As a Student Representative, I hope to improve my public speaking and get better at making decisions. I would love to help with fundraising and counting the money that we raise. I would be happy to organise fun activities for the school.

Pari Hello, my name is Pari and I am in Room 17 with Miss Balogh. I have attended Wattle Grove Primary School for six years. My family is from India and we settled here a few years ago. My older brother and I were born in Hamilton, New Zealand. I grew up mostly in Perth and I enjoy spending my free time drawing and playing with my friends. This year I had the best opportunity, I was able to participate in the P.A.C.E.S program at Darling Range Community College. The things I mostly enjoy about Wattle Grove Primary School are: The friendly environment which welcomes everyone The enjoyable challenging work We treat each other kindly and as family We strive for the best, 120% to be precise The fundraiser and free dress ups days we partake in As a Student Representative, I want to develop better leadership skills and improve my public speaking. I look forward to becoming a better role model for the younger children in the school. I am more than willing to help younger students to solve playground problems because I really looked up to the older students when I was their age.
