From the principal

Dear Parents carers, staff and students,

ADVENT

The ancient Roman god, Janus, the god ofbeginnings and gateways, was depicted ashaving two faces, each looking in theopposite direction, at once staring into thepast, while also gazing into the future.

The season of Advent is like this; on the onehand in Advent we return in spirit to thepeople looking forward to the first coming of

the One who would save his people. The first candle in theAdvent wreath is called “the prophecy candle” because itreminds us of the prophets who foretold the coming of theMessiah.

Advent also looks into the future: to His glorious second comingand reminds us of our own dying when we will encounter theLord. As we hear in the Gospel: “the Son of Man is coming atan hour you do not expect!”

In Advent we hear Jesus’ words: stay alert, stay awake, beprepared, be ready! These words suggest we are not alert, notawake, not prepared or ready. We hear anew the call of StPaul: “You know the time has come: you must wake now; oursalvation is even nearer…”

How shall we stay awake and prepare for the coming of Jesusthis Advent? Let us carry the prayer of the early Church inour hearts, a prayer suited to Advent: Maranatha, Come Lord

Jesus! (1 Corinthians 16:13-14, 22-24; Revelation 22.20;Didache of early church 10,6).

I would like to thank Fr Paul Durkin for the Diocese of BrokenBay‘s advent lectio devina booklet 2016 “Preparing the way”,his inspirational writing is most welcomed.
