Plan for WA Public Schools 2012-2015

The Director General of Education has recently released the strategic plan for public schools over the next three years. The strategic plan is essentially the ‘ big picture’ or our vision and once again addresses some exciting ideas. The focus is on Excellence and Equity with priorities in four areas. These include:

• Success for all students

• Distinctive schools

• High quality teaching and leadership and

• A capable and responsive organisation

In the first of these priorities it is expected that schools, among other things, will improve student learning with engagement, expand and strengthen education for gifted and talented students, increase the use of technology to enhance student learning and establish better intervention strategies and integration of services for children and families before they start school and in the early years of school.

Priority two focuses on continuing to provide opportunities for schools to become independent which in turn will hopefully result in them meeting the needs of their particular communities and allow greater choice to parents and students as well as involve parents and the community in the life of each school.

High quality teaching and leadership outlined in priority three is something we all strive for in education. We want to attract, retain and develop high quality teachers and leaders. This will be achieved by providing staff with access to quality professional learning and schools with an opportunity to develop staffing profiles and select and appoint staff. There is also an acknowledgement that within a school there will be high expectations of performance and high standards of professional conduct and ethics.

Priority four focuses on promoting greater equity, transparency and flexibility in school resourcing and providing rigorous and transpar-ent accountability practice at classroom, school and system levels.

This term we are focusing on Earth and Space

Sciences. Year 4’s are exploring the idea of the

Earth’s surface changing over time, while the

Year 5’s are investigating Earth’s place in space.

This week, Year fours completed an investigation exploring the properties of rocks. We re-

cently purchased a new class set of magnifying glasses to replace the old ones which were

over 15 years old, and they have proved to be an important tool in our science observations

so far this term.

The Year fives have been busy completing their solar system posters, and learning about the

movements of the Earth around the Sun, and the moon around the Earth

A band information evening will be held

for all interested Year 4-5 parents. The meeting will be held in the Library on

Wednesday, 6 June at 7.00-8.00pm. All aspects of the band program (eg in-

strument choice, tuition, etc) will be ex-

plained at this session by Mrs Annette De Hoog, the Band Di-

rector. The children will begin tuition next term.

Enrolments for 2013 are now open. Stu-dents whose birthdates fall between 1 July 2008 and 30 June 2009 are eligi-ble to enrol in our Kindergarten pro-gram in 2013. Application for Enrol-ment forms can be obtained from the front office. Children whose birth dates fall between 1 July 2007 and 30 June 2008 are eligible for our Pre-Primary program. Applications close Friday 3 August, 2012. Please note you must provide your child's birth certificate, immunisation records and proof of residence within Rostrata in-take area. Students currently enrolled in Kindy and Pre-Primary must complete an appli-cation for enrolment for 2013. These will be sent home in the near future. Once students have been enrolled into Year 1 they no longer need to complete applica-tions each year.

Page 2 ROSTRATA PRIMARY SCHOOL

Miss Brennan is the new year 6 teacher in C3 and came to us from Booragoon Primary School where she taught the year 6/7’s. Miss Brennan went to Ross-moyne Primary school and did her first prac at Rostrata Primary School with Mr Wilkinson in D3. Some of the then Year 2’s are now Year 7 students in C Block!

Miss Brennan said that it was her Year 6 teacher that inspired her to become a teacher because of her fun and creative style of teaching which engaged the stu-dents every day. Having two aunties, who are also teachers, furthered her passion for teaching. It was always her passion to teach the upper school years as she enjoyed the satisfaction of watching the ‘light globes’ switch on during lessons.

In her spare time, Miss Brennan plays netball for Rossmoyne Netball Club on Saturday afternoons at the Fremantle Netball Association. Some of our Rostrata students are also involved with this competition.

Miss Brennans said “My time at home is taken up by training my one year old Border Collie Labrador puppy (called Albie—short for Albert Einstein) not to kill my one year old kitten (called Chardie—short for Chardonnay).

The Waste Wise Schools Program is celebrating 10 years of waste education this year and we want to recognise the work of students, staff and schools in reducing waste.

What is your school doing to reduce waste? Do you have a green team running a successful worm farm? Is there an outstanding teacher, parent or staff member at your school running the Waste Wise program? If so, we would like you to nominate them for a Waste Wise Schools award at the following website: http://www.zerowaste.wa.gov.au/programs/public-submissions/waste-wise-schools-competition/ All you need to do is submit one paragraph telling us about your school’s waste wise achievements. You can nominate a person, a team of people or the whole school.

Entries close on 31 May 2012. Outstanding schools will be invited to attend the Waste Wise 10 year celebration event in June. All entries will receive a certificate and go in the draw to win a waste education prize pack.

T he kitchen has been producing some lovely dishes this week.

Our bumper harvest of silver beet had

introduced our delicious creamy silver

beet pasta with parmesan.

T he rocket and mezzuna have been the basis of our delicious salad

and bacon and pine nuts as finishing

touches.

W e produced more zucchini

scones last week and our Year

4’s were introduced to their first com-

plicated practical lesson. They pro-

duced a squash stir-fry and a delicious

Preparing and Sharing

S ome beautiful weather for gardening and for laying eggs. The chickens are happily laying almost an egg a day each. Thanks to

the Roscoe family for the last two weekends. If you would like to give your children the experience of looking after chickens but can’t have them at home, putting your name down on the chicken roster is ideal. I am currently looking for families to help during the July holi-days.

T hank you to all who helped to-wards the afternoon tea and at-

tended. We were able to answer many questions about volunteering in the school.

I f you were unable to attend fill in an Expression of Interest form at the

front office so that the appropriate per-son can call you to answer any ques-tions about volunteering in the kitchen, garden or canteen.

I n the garden we have been germinat-ing pea, leek and fennel seeds and

planting out different types of broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage. The peas are already sprouting their first leaves after only a few days so we hope the slaters are not too hungry. We now have red wooden spoons decorated by the pp/1 classes that signify a plant is not to be harvested as the fruit from the plant will be kept for seed for follow-ing seasons. Thank you to Mrs Blake's class for the first batch of spoons. They are so colourful in our garden.

What you can do to help : Volunteer in the kitchen or garden on a Tuesday or

Wednesday. There are Volunteer Expressions of Interest

forms at the front office for you to fill in contact details and then we can give you a call.

School Banking Team

I wish to raise the awareness of the school community that Rostrata Primary School is a nut friendly (free) school.

There are a few students who have high al-lergic reactions—life threatening—to nuts and nut products. To minimize the effects of these foods we would appreciate if parents could be aware of foods or packaging coming into the school that may cause an anaphylactic reaction .

Thank you very much for your support. It is greatly appreciated. Together we can provide a safe environment for all students.

Friday 25th May is

65 Roses Day... ...is the national day of awareness for Cystic

Fibrosis. Cystic Fibrosis is the most common

genetic life threatening condition affecting

Australian children. People with cystic fibrosis get a thick,

sticky mucus in their lungs which makes them need to cough a

lot and requires them to have extensive daily physiotherapy.

There is no cure of Cystic Fibrosis at this stage, however, with

continued support and research the actual life expectancy of a

child born with Cystic Fibrosis has risen from 5 years to mid

thirties today. If you would like to support 65 Roses Day, there

will be a collection box in the front office where your generous

donation can be left. Thank you.
