1 Newsletter No. 22 - Term 3Week 3 Thursday 30 July 2015 From the Principal……… KOWLINDA’S BIG DAY OUT Yesterday, Kowlinda, six students, Libby Shaw, Ted Dugdale and I went off to Greenacres Golf Club in Kew East to meet all the other cows and students who had participated in the Dairy Board’s Picasso Cow Project. Lots of fun was had as the children participated in quizzes and games with the students from ten other schools from around the State. It was amazing the different designs on each cow, representing healthy eating and healthy bones. We thought our Kowlinda was the most beautiful, of course! Even though there were schools there from dairy farm communities, the girls from Kalinda won the Milking Contest! This provided a lot of fun and mirth for everyone. This has been a terrific project to be part of, not only did we greet, name and decorate Kowlinda, but the children in Grades 5&6 learnt all about healthy eating, exercise and healthy living that, hopefully, will last them forever. Kowlinda will now live at Kalinda Primary School where she will pop up at different locations. PARENT OPINION SURVEY REMINDER At the moment we only have 27 Parent Opinion Surveys returned to school. If you did receive one in the mail please complete and return them tomorrow as they need to be posted off tomorrow afternoon. The 2015 Parent Opinion Survey was sent out to randomly selected parents early last week. I ask you to take the time to complete the survey as your opinions are important to us and will contribute to the future management and organisation of our school. Thank you for taking the time to participate; your assistance is greatly appreciated. GAIL POLLARD PRINCIPAL

WORLD VISION FREE DRESS DAY On Wednesday of this week, the Kalinda community came along in free dress, ready to ‘go without’ for World Vision and our sponsor child, Deny. Some grades went without electricity, some without furniture and three grade 5/ 6 grades went without shelter! Talking with various teachers throughout the day, it was very evident that students were gaining a perspective on what life might be like if you didn’t have some of the things we take for granted. Throughout the coming weeks, we will endeavour to publish some writing that various students created as a response to this activity. Thank you all for your support of this worthy cause; we raised just over $600 in support of Deny and World Vision.

Today, we went without……….

In 34C, we went without furniture to support World Vision and our sponsored child, Deny. Sitting on the floor was annoying, uncomfortable, and hard. We think today is important to understand what World Vision really does with our donations. Tate, in our class, did an amazing presentation for Morning News about the work World Vision does. He showed us two video clips; one was about how difficult life is for families in some countries, and the second video was about how people can help make a real and positive change to their lives. The video, called ‘Tamin’, showed how the family was given a few chickens, which they bred, and used for eggs, and also to sell to buy other things they needed, like a cow. Here in Ringwood, our lives are easy and we have everything we need. It is hard to imagine families going without the basic things in life. We are really happy to be supporting World Vision.

LEGO masterpiece.

Kalinda AFL Team Update On Wednesday of this week, our AFL team travelled to Domeney Reserve in Park Orchards for the Division Final. We were fortunate enough to be playing on a very good surface on a large ground which we thought would suit us well. Unfortunately, we didn’t start well, giving up two early goals in the first quarter. The players battled hard against an opposition who all play together in a team outside their school environment and have some really good structures. In the second quarter, the Kalinda boys again worked really hard, getting onto the scoreboard, with two points. Our pressure and tackling had lifted and we were getting our fair share of the ball but just couldn’t make the most of it. The second half was all Kalinda in general play. We had the ball in our forward line more but again couldn’t quite convert these opportunities. We did outscore Park Orchards in the second half but couldn’t peg back the difference. In the end, we were beaten by about 3 goals. I’d like to thank all of the parents who have transported theirs and other students to and from games. It was a big commitment but without that, we would have been rotating players in and out of the footy team. This team have achieved something that no other Kalinda footy team has been able to. Not only District Champions but winning one of the District playoffs was more than any other Kalinda footy team. Well done to all involved. STUART McLEAN

It's simple to participate. From Wednesday 15th July to Tuesday 8th September 2015, when you shop at Woolworths you can collect Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers from the checkout operator or through an online order and place them on a Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker Sheet.
