Mr Field has almost completed his first term as Deputy Principal and parents who have worked with him during this term will appreciate his compassion, combined with a strong desire to set clear boundaries for students. We are indeed fortunate to have many of our experienced staff who are willing and capable of filling this crucial Deputy Principal role, which is the main intersection point between schools and families. Could I remind parents that there is no need for junior students to be at the Jetty Village before school. Our school canteen is open and in addition, the breakfast club is open every day providing nutritious food for no cost. Cereal, toast, fruit, hot chocolate, banana smoothies and sometimes pancakes, scrambled eggs…. This morning I surveyed the junior students who had been to Jetty Village. They were purchasing lollies, Oreo biscuits and coffee. Clearly not essential nutrition items. Michelle Waugh, our dynamic and hard-working canteen manager, provides a wonderful service to our school through a range of items and by opening for long hours, well beyond that offered by other schools. We are required to meet the NSW Government Healthy Canteen guidelines. All schools must pass the assessment by the end of 2019 and Michelle has already achieved this. It would be unfortunate if all this good work of our canteen team and our breakfast club volunteers, is undone by parents dropping their children of a morning at Jetty Village to purchase junk food. Senior Sargent Wal Brooks addressed the P&C to get feedback on proposed parking and traffic arrangements around our school. Part of the P&C’s role in a school is to represent the voice of parents in matters of concern like this. The P&C is also looking at grants for various school projects in our upcoming meeting. The next meeting will be at 7.00pm on Monday 1st April 2019. Before this meeting starts panel training will be held. This enables parents to participate in selecting and employing staff at the school as the need arises. Please contact the school if you would like to participate. Caitlin Mackie PUBLICITY OFFICER

4 CHHS NEWSLETTER 2019/02

With Term 1 well under way we have seen significant transition across all year groups as students have settled into their 2019 year of study. I wish to congratulate Year 7 students on the completion of their first term of high school. I pass on my thanks to Year 7 families and the dedicated group of CHHS teachers and aides who have supported their journey. Equally, I congratulate our Year 11 students on navigating the first term of HSC studies. I have been very impressed by the feedback I’m receiving related to the commitment the vast majority of Year 11 students are applying to their chosen subjects. Across Years 8 to 10 many students have taken on new subjects and have made the transition look easy. Year 12 are well into their second term of their final year and with assessments fast approaching, I urge them to follow a regular study plan, seek advice from their dedicated teachers and rest well in order to achieve the best that they can. That’s all anyone can ask! It has been great to see both Year 11 and 12 students taking advantage of the study day in the library on Wednesdays. This is a great opportunity to form study groups and share information in a relaxed atmosphere. Thank you to all the families who attended our recent parent teacher night, taking the opportunity to meet their child’s new teachers for 2019 and receive feedback on their start to the year. Over 270 families used our online booking system to book 1300+ meetings over four hours. A successful education starts with a strong home – school collaboration and this data clearly shows Coffs Harbour High School parents are invested in their child’s education and supportive of their teachers. If you were unable to make it to the parent teacher nights, teachers are always happy for you to make contact with the school to discuss your child’s progress. As a 21st century school, you can keep up to date with school events and information by connecting with our Facebook page or website, which are regularly updated with photos and stories. Looking ahead, Year 7 will be heading off to The Great Aussie Bush Camp in Week 10. Year 10 Peer Leaders are eagerly looking forward to joining them as they form new friendships and create new memories whilst participating in team building activities and challenges. It will be a very physical three days and the activities will push your child out of their comfort zone but I can guarantee they will sleep well on Wednesday night! Finally, a few reminders for parents. When your child is absent from school a text message will generate to the mobile number on file. Please assist the school to maintain accurate attendance records for your child by responding to the text to explain your child’s absence. Should your child be absent for an extended period of time, please advise the school and provide necessary documentation for attendance records. We have noticed that some students arrive very early at school in the mornings. Parents are reminded that supervision in the playground begins at 8.30am in the mornings and students should not arrive earlier than this time, unless by prior arrangement with the Deputy Principal. Once students in Years 7-10 arrive at school, they are not permitted to leave school grounds to go to the shops or beach unless accompanied by a teacher. If students walk to school, they are asked not to congregate near private property or at the shops, but walk directly to school. Parents and students are reminded that our school procedures for use of phones and other electronic devices state that they are to be kept on silent and in bags during lesson time, unless permission has been given by the class teacher. If students breach these rules, their phones may be confiscated by teachers and will be stored in the office for the remainder of the day. Thanks for a wonderful Term 1 and I hope each of you have a safe and enjoyable Easter break. Connel Field DEPUTY PRINCIPAL (YEARS 8, 10 & 12)

SYDNEY CAPA EXCURSION

On the morning of 19th February, 45 excited students and four equally excited teachers boarded the bus to Sydney to indulge in two days of cultural activities to inspire and enthuse the students in their studies back at school. First up was a visit to the Opera House to watch Encore. This was a fantastic show with quality performances from the top Year 12 Music students from 2018. Next morning it was up early for the art students to walk to the Art Gallery of NSW via Sydney landmarks including the Australian War Memorial, the Archibald Fountain and St Mary’s Cathedral. Here they saw the first of the Artexpress exhibitions, plenty of other art and an exhibition of Modernism on loan from Germany. Artexpress is comprised of the top HSC art works from 2018. After lunch it was back on the bus to go first to Carriageworks to see some amazing installations and video projected artworks before heading to the Hazlehurst Gallery to view another Artexpress exhibition. The Music students also visited the Art Gallery and several Music shops in the city before going out to the Jazz Club that night for a special show and dinner. On our last morning the art students went off to the Brett Whiteley Gallery for an educator lead tour. This has become a favorite place to visit in Sydney and the students love to look at his actual studio and place of residence. After this they reunited with the Music students to conclude the excursion at the Capitol Theatre to see the musical “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”. This was a fabulous excursion, enjoyed by all. On behalf of the attending teachers I would like to congratulate the students on their exemplary behavior. We are already planning for next year’s Sydney trip. Jan Chivas HEAD TEACHER CAPA

BANGARRA DANCE WORKSHOP

"In week 4 a group of CHHS Goori students, along with Uncle Merv and Ms Bonney, attended the Bangarra Dance Workshop at Nambucca High School. The workshops are designed to engage high school aged children in contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dance theatre. They provide an authentic and creative environment for our students to learn about the history of the company and the background of the Bangarra dancers who lead the workshop, as well as participating in a practical dance workshop designed especially for them. We all had an amazing day, our students danced up a storm and represented the school and community wonderfully! Kristal Bonney HSIE TEACHER

WELCOME TO OUR

CONFUCIUS VOLUNTEER TEACHERS FROM CHINA

This year Coffs Harbour High School is pleased to welcome two more Confucius Volunteer Teachers, Emily Shi Mengling and Phoebe Liu Shan, to our Chinese program. Emily comes to us from Leshan City in Sichuan Province. She is studying a Masters of Translation at the Shanghai International Studies University. Phoebe comes from Hefei City in Anhui Province and she is studying a Masters in Chinese International Education at Suzhou University. Both teachers bring with them a wealth of skills and experience and are very happy to be making their first visit to Australia. Despite the inevitable culture shock associated with a transition from a large Chinese city to regional New South Wales, both teachers have settled well and are enjoying their first teaching experiences. Both have commented on how welcoming staff and students are at Coffs Harbour High School and how comfortable they feel working here. Phoebe is teaching Year 10 and Year 9 100-hour classes with Miss Scriven, while Emily is taking Year 9 200-hour classes with Mr Dun. They are also team-teaching a number of periods of the Year 8 load so that all of our Chinese students will have a native speaker in the classroom for at least one of their lessons. They are hoping to instill a love of Chinese language and culture in our students and are looking forward to exploring more of our beautiful region during their stay. David Dun CHINESE TEACHER

NATIONAL YOUTH SCIENCE FORUM 2019

Early this year I travelled down to Australia’s National University in Canberra to attend the 2019

National Youth Science Program. I stayed on campus for just under two weeks having all my

hospitality sorted after by ANU whilst being given the opportunity to learn all about Science and

how it is applied to our world. Throughout the 11 days, I attended several lectures that varied

from deep space theories and future studies, to the conservation of certain species in Australia

and each lecture sparked a new interest for me.

Along with all the exciting concepts and knowledge that was being shared I found that the

program really helped me grasp a better understanding of how to navigate my way through

Year 12, uni and gave me more ideas as to what possibilities there were for me on a career

perspective – and the possibilities are endless.

I also made friends from not only all over Australia but also from around the world. Students from

Germany, China, America and Canada attended my session, sharing their senior school

experiences and learning about ours. It was truly amazing how close we all got on session,

friends and connections that I’m sure I will have for a very long time, really made the NYSF

worthwhile.

One of the Science activities that I was fortunate enough to attend was a DNA profiling

experiment where we were split into pairs to disclose which source of DNA was the culprit of a

murder, much like the process that would occur in real life investigations. Another we were out at

Mulligans Flat exploring the nature and wildlife they had to offer such as the shy echidnas

(personal favourite). After any of these STEM visits, I would always come back with sparks of

interest, knowledge and a burnt face more than 50% of the time!

Overall, I strongly encourage students in Year 11 to attend the NYSF program. Whether you are

certain that you want to study Science at university or are not sure what you might want to do at

uni or even just enjoy the idea of Science, again, I could not recommend the NYSF any higher it

was truly a life changing experience.
