COVID-19 UpdateDear Parents and Caregivers

Queensland Health and the Australian Department of Health are working relessly to manage and contain the impact of this virus for Australians and Queenslanders alike. They are regularly upda ng travel advice (h ps://www.smartraveller.gov.au/) as new informa on emerges.

The Department of Educa on con nues to work closely with Queensland Health to monitor the situa on and iden fy and manage any impacts on schools and early childhood centres. You can be assured that we have been preparing and stand ready to act should the need arise.

I wanted to also provide you with some more informa on about the approach that our school might need to take if a COVID-19 case is iden fi ed in our school.

If a case is iden fi ed in our school, the Department of Educa on and Queensland Health will work closely with us in managing our response and our ac ons will be taken with community health at the centre of our decision making.

If there is a confi rmed case at our school, it is likely our school will need to close for a period to allow Queensland Health to assess the situa on and to perform contact tracing as required to iden fy people and students who may have come in contact with the COVID-19 case. You may have already seen this happening in other states where confi rmed cases have been iden fi ed.

our school is safe for students and staff to return when clearance is given. A closure is likely to include any on-site services such as outside school hours care (OSHC) and other facility hirers.

Con nuity of learning is extremely important to us and, as in other disaster and emergency events, the department has online learning materials and virtual classroom capability that can be used by teachers to support your child’s learning. The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) also has procedures in place to support senior secondary students.

If your child develops fl u-like symptoms, please:* keep your child at home;* avoid close contact with others such as touching, kissing or hugging, or any mass gatherings, especially those involving other children;* see a doctor or contact 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84) immediately;* seek medical advice if your child has other underlying medical condi ons; and * call ahead to the medical centre or doctor’s surgery, advising of your child’s symptoms and the closure of the school.

It is also important to con nue to encourage your children to:* wash their hands regularly with soap and water, par cularly before and a er ea ng, and a er going to the toilet;* use alcohol-based hand sani ser if soap is unavailable;* cover coughs and sneezes with a ssue or the inside of their elbow; and * dispose of ssues in the bin immediately.

As a community, during this prepara on phase, it may be mely for families to consider their own family and care arrangements should school closure be necessary.

Early departures and late arrivals have a signifi cant impact on percentage of class a endance.

Parents / carers are reminded that it is a legal requirement to have all student absences explained. The easiest way to explain any student absence is simply text 0429 316 194 providing the student’s name and reason for absence, early on the day the student is absent, or alterna vely, reply to the text message sent to parents / carers by SMS.

All unexplained absences are followed up with a formal le er which must be completed, signed and returned. We ask that you assist us to keep absences up-to-date by following the above guidelines.

Year 9 Leadership Camp 2020

The 2020 camp will be held at Emu Gully, via Helidon from Wednesday 11 November to Friday 13 November. Mr Hay, Ms Kalinoe and Mrs Gill will a end the camp, as well as teachers from Killarney.

The an cipated cost of the camp is $290 per student. This covers all food, accommoda on, transport and the genuinely unique Emu Gully experience. No addi onal money will be required. Parents who wish to pay by instalments thoughout the year may do so. Please speak to Mrs Reedman, our school’s Business Manager, regarding this. We ask that a $50 non-refundable deposit be paid prior to Friday 3 April, for this camp.

Na onal Day of Ac on Against Bullying and Violence

Na onal Day of Ac on against Bullying and Violence (NDA) is on tomorrow, Friday 20 March. The NDA 2020 marks the 10 year anniversary of Australia’s key an -bullying event for schools. The theme for 2020 is Take Ac on Together. Students and staff will be provided with an orange ribbon to wear on this day. Bullying. No Way!

Tuckshop suppor ng Chaplaincy Service

Tuckshop is now suppor ng the Chaplaincy Service by selling an item for $1.50 at second break on a Monday. The tuckshop item for chaplaincy is an ice-cream sundae, with your choice of topping and sprinkles. Bring along your $1.50. Proceeds go to Allora’s Chaplaincy Service.

QDU Deba ng – Round 1

Allora P-10 State School’s Year 10 deba ng team competed in the fi rst round of the QDU Deba ng in the Toowoomba Compe on on Wednesday March 4. The team had the nega ve side of the topic ‘that all school assessment should be pass/fail’.

With Macey as 1st speaker, Nicola as 2nd speaker, Xavia as 3rd speaker and Lachlan as me keeper, the team debated against the Toowoomba Anglican College. The adjudicator commended the team on having a very strong case and that all speakers spoke well and went to me. The team was very excited to come away with a win for their fi rst debate for 2020.

Canberra FundraisingDisco - the Year 10 class sincerely thank Mr Johnson and all staff and parents who helped at the disco, and a special thanks goes to all students who a ended and assisted in our Canberra fundraising eff orts. A great night was had by all.

Easter Raffl e: We are holding an Easter mul -draw raffl e with the fi rst prize being a truckload of Easter eggs. There are various other prizes also. Tickets are $1 each and available from Year 10 students or, for primary students, their class teacher. The raffl e will be drawn on assembly on Monday 30 March.

Interhouse Cross Country: Our Interhouse Cross Country has been cancelled for this term.

Darling Downs Swimming (13-18 Years): Claire E competed at the Darling Downs Swimming Trials in Ga on recently. Claire placed 3rd, 5th, 6th and 11th in her 50m events. This is a great personal achievement. Well done, Claire.

Darling Downs Swimming (10-12 Years): Rikaya, Georgina, Sienna, Ma lda, Addison and Ma llda a ended the Darling Downs Swimming trials in Ga on. Swimmers swam hard with a number of personal best swims on the day. The most notable was Georgina who was successful in both her 50m and 100m breaststroke events. She placed 3rd in both events and this secured selec on into the Darling Downs team. Unfortunately, the State Championships have been cancelled. Well done Georgina on all your hard work and success this swimming season.

Southern Downs So ball Trials: The 10–12 year old so ball trials were held in Warwick recently. Congratula ons to William who was successful in gaining selec on into the Southern Downs team. He will now trial at a later date for a posi on in the Darling Downs team.

Darling Downs Trials: Darling Downs’s spor ng trials for Winter sports were held in Toowoomba last week. Alexia a ended netball trials and Sam rugby league. These students competed well on the day but did not make the Darling Downs team.

Claire E recently a ended the Border District soccer trials and was selected as part of the Border District soccer team to trial at Darling Downs. Congratula ons Claire.

Southern Downs Trials: A number of 10-12 year old students competed at the Southern Downs trials in Friday on Warwick. Students trialled in hockey, rugby league and netball. The following students were successful in their selec on – Addison in hockey, Sienna, Ma lda, Kaelee and Ma llda in netball and Orry, Zac and Blake in rugby league. This is a great eff ort students. Well done!

Central Downs Triathlon: As previously communicated, the Central Downs Triathlon was to be held in Nobby on Friday. The triathlon event has now been postponed and will likely take place in Term 4.

Central Downs Tennis Trials: Congratula ons to our primary tennis students who a ended the Central Downs primary tennis trials on Tuesday 17 March. Our A Team – Alexandria, Orry, Marshall and Zac won the A Team trophy while Grayson and Zavier were part of the team that took out the B Team trophy. Congratula ons and good luck to Alexandria and Orry who have been selected to compete in the Southern Downs trials. Mr Kanowski commended all of our students on their excep onal eff ort, behaviour and sportsmanship, as well as their commitment to training over recent weeks.

Level 2 Athle cs

Members of our staff joined with other staff throughout the area and a ended a rigorous two-day athle cs coaching and offi cia ng course over the weekend. This Level 2 Athle cs course will benefi t our students across all year levels. Thank you to all staff who a ended.
