Verbis ST RITA’S COLLEGE Dear Parents/Guardian, Welcome to Term 4. This is a Term which tradionally seems to move very quickly. We have so many significant events happening. Included in these is the Year 12 girls sing their final school assessments and preparing themselves to enter a world without school. The past twelve years have been very regimented for them and my hope is that they have built the skills required to equip them to succeed in whatever pathway they pursue. While much more will be said to, and about, our Senior Class of 2018 in the coming weeks, for now I would just like to say that it is also my hope they have learnt many valuable lessons at this College and have taken every opportunity to develop their character and achieve to their full potenal. It will be important that they finish the year well by giving of their very best in all their schoolwork for the next six weeks or so. It is during Term 4 that we also turn our minds towards the student leadership for next year. The Captains for 2019 will be decided over the next few weeks and the Year 11 girls are preparing themselves to lead St Rita’s in what will be themed the Year of Jusce. Part of their preparaon for this was completed at the end of last Term. I wish to commend the Year 11 cohort on the way they threw themselves wholeheartedly into their Leadership days. As our Year 11 students either enter the final year of their formal schooling and our Year 12 students are beginning to move out into the wider world, it is our hope that they appreciate what is important in life and what will make them truly happy. I suppose for all of us it is a constant bale to keep before ourselves those essenal principles, which are needed if one wants to be happy in life. Immanuel Kant, that famous 19th century philosopher, considered that in order to be happy in life you needed: “something to do, someone to love, and something to hope for.” This adage has been somewhat mirrored more recently in the views of Pope Francis in the online Catholic News magazine in an arcle headlined: “In latest interview, Pope Francis reveals top 10 secrets to happiness”. This list, of what the Pope believes to be important aributes of living a happy life includes these same three rules that Kant lists albeit expressed in a different way. In terms of having something to do the Pope states that “dignity is given to you when you can bring food home” from one’s own labour. It is part of the human condion that we need those labour-centred aspects of living to help give life meaning and it involves more than just being occupied at doing something for money. It must have meaning, and our society should ensure innovave ways are found to create dignified jobs especially for young people. This will be a challenge for our governments, both state and federal, especially given what we hear about current economic circumstances and we should be as supporve as we can of our young people as they enter the world of work. Keep reminding them that what they end up doing is not important so long as it has meaning and importance for their life. Kant’s rule of “Having someone to love” is expressed by the Pope as “Be giving of yourself to others.” People need to be open and generous toward others Francis says, because “if you withdraw into yourself, you run the risk of becoming egocentric. And stagnant water becomes putrid. It’s too easy to fall into the habit of being negave about others and we need to resist the urge to talk badly about others because it really just indicates that we have a low self-esteem. It is us really saying ‘I feel so low that instead of picking myself up I have to cut others down!’” The Pope advises: “Leng go of negave things quickly, is healthy.” It makes us more open to the love of others and gives us the capability of returning that love to those closest to us. For our mental and spiritual health we do need to love. The third essence of happiness is leading a life that is hopeful. Our Chrisan faith endows us with a hope that there is more to life than what we experience materially. This is very much counter-cultural in our consumerist world. But, as Francis points out, consumerism has only brought us anxiety and stress where our me is ‘swallowed up’, so we spend me chasing and accumulang stuff, but in the end not knowing what it is all for. Believing and hoping that what Jesus tells us about a Loving Father is in fact a reality, which sets what we do during our life on this earth into a more meaningful context. My prayer is that every girl will find happiness in her life as she grapples with the day to day challenges which enrich us and make us beer people. ST RITA’S COLLEGE

Dear Parents/Guardian,

Welcome to Term 4. This is a Term which traditionally seems to move very quickly. We have so many significant events happening. Included in these is the Year 12 girls sitting their final school assessments and preparing themselves to enter

a world without school. The past twelve years have been very regimented for them and my hope is that they have built the skills required to equip them to succeed in whatever pathway they pursue. While much more will be said to, and about, our Senior Class of 2018 in the coming weeks, for now I would just like to say that it is also my hope they have learnt many valuable lessons at this College and have taken every opportunity to develop their character and achieve to their full potential. It will be important that they finish the year well by giving of their very best in all their schoolwork for the next six weeks or so.

It is during Term 4 that we also turn our minds towards the student leadership for next year. The Captains for 2019 will be decided over the next few weeks and the Year 11 girls are preparing themselves to lead St Rita’s in what will be themed the Year of Justice. Part of their preparation for this was completed at the end of last Term.

I suppose for all of us it is a constant battle to keep before ourselves those essential principles, which are needed if one wants to be happy in life.

Immanuel Kant, that famous 19th century philosopher, considered that in order to be happy in life you needed: “something to do, someone to love, and something to hope for.” This adage has been somewhat mirrored more recently in the views of Pope Francis in the online Catholic News magazine in an article headlined: “In latest interview, Pope Francis reveals top 10 secrets to happiness”. This list, of what the Pope believes to be important attributes of living a happy life includes these same three rules that Kant lists albeit expressed in a different way.

In terms of having something to do the Pope states that “dignity is given to you when you can bring food home” from one’s own labour. It is part of the human condition that we need those labour-centred aspects of living to help give life meaning and it involves more than just being occupied at doing something for money. It must have meaning, and our society should ensure innovative ways are found to create dignified jobs especially for young people. This will be a challenge for our governments, both state and federal, especially given what we hear about current economic circumstances and we should be as supportive as we can of our young people as they enter the world of work.

It’s too easy to fall into the habit of being negative about others and we need to resist the urge to talk badly about others because it really just indicates that we have a low self-esteem. It is us really saying ‘I feel so low that instead of picking myself up I have to cut others down!’” The Pope advises: “Letting go of negative things quickly, is healthy.” It makes us more open to the love of others and gives us the capability of returning that love to those closest to us. For our mental and spiritual health we do need to love.

The third essence of happiness is leading a life that is hopeful. Our Christian faith endows us with a hope that there is more to life than what we experience materially. This is very much counter-cultural in our consumerist world. But, as Francis points out, consumerism has only brought us anxiety and stress where our time is ‘swallowed up’, so we spend time chasing and accumulating stuff, but in the end not knowing what it is all for. Believing and hoping that what Jesus tells us about a Loving Father is in fact a reality, which sets what we do during our life on this earth into a more meaningful context.

My prayer is that every girl will find happiness in her life as she grapples with the day to day challenges which enrich us and make us better people.

2018 YEAR OF COURAGE - LEADING WITH COURAGE

ST RITA’S COLLEGE

Welcome to Term 4, a short Term filled with lots of activity.

Last Saturday at Orientation Day we welcomed our newest community members. The Year 11 students did a wonderful job hosting their 2019 Little Sisters. It is always exciting to meet our future. Thanks to all who assisted on this day.

On Tuesday 30 October we hold our Annual Thanksgiving Celebration (ATC) in the Concert Hall of the Queensland Performing Arts Centre. Please note that special awards information is located in MySRC/Parents/Curriculum/Awards.

The following day, 31 October, we will have a drought relief fundraiser in support of our friends in Longreach. The Presentation Sisters from Longreach established our school. For a gold coin donation, or more, girls are invited to wear jeans. Details have been posted in morning messages and in a student email.

On Saturday 3 November, a sausage sizzle will be held at Stafford Bunnings. This is in support of two Water Polo competitions. In December, we have students competing in States at Chandler, and in January, the Australian Youth Water Polo Festival will be held across various Brisbane venues.

A reminder to all that there is a student free day on Monday 22 October.

You might find the following an interesting read. It is about the new apple update, which has some great features for parents and students to manage their screen time. https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT208982

Below is the latest report from School TV. The College acknowledges the assistance from the Parents and Friends in sponsoring this resource.

Exam Stress - Special ReportStudents in their final year of school are considered a high-risk group for depression and anxiety. Sleep deprivation, diet and social media are some of the biggest issues faced by this group of teens. Therefore, it is vitally important that a student’s mental health is looked after as well as their physical health.

Keeping things in perspective for students and parents alike, can help prevent everyone getting overwhelmed. Although this final year is important, it is not necessarily the most important year of your child’s life.

There are many strategies that students can implement to help themselves. Parents can provide support, not only emotionally, but also practically by keeping their child well-nourished and encouraging physical activity.

In this special report, parents will find useful tips to support their child during this often stressful time. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered here and we always welcome your feedback.

If you do have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information.

MARIAN HOUSE Mrs Liz Devine, Head of House - Marian

Last Friday, Marian House held its annual Colour Day in support of the work of Beyondblue, its Wellbeing Ministry. Each year, Marian holds an active living day, highlighting the importance of living active, healthy lifestyles and the connection between physical and mental health. Despite the wet weather, many girls took advantage of the giant inflatable waterslide during the lunch hour.

Beyondblue provides information and support to help everyone in Australia achieve the best possible mental health, whatever age and wherever they live. The Beyondblue website has many activities you can do to improve your personal wellbeing: www.beyondblue.org.au/personal-best/pillar/wellbeing.

2018 YEAR OF COURAGE - LEADING WITH COURAGE

ST RITA’S COLLEGE

Term 4 is marching on for Year 12 Students

I spoke with the girls in the final week of last Term and recapped preferencing and scholarships. Please check the Key Dates Section pages 20 and 21 of the 2019 QATC Guide for more information. Closing dates for Scholarships are fast approaching; please see the individual institution websites for these dates. Pages 14, 15 and 38 of the Options Bulletin discuss some of dates. I strongly encourage all Year 12 students and their parents to read the QTAC and Tertiary Entry section of the Options Bulletin starting on page 25. The rules and key dates will become very important as your daughter approaches the end of this Term.

The Universities section on page 33 lists future options for students like QUT Start and the UQ Enhanced Studies Program (ESP). Students interested in these wonderful options are encouraged to see Ms Roy in Diverse Learning.

Gap Year options for both Years 11 and 12 students are highlighted on pages 16 and 17. Some interesting statistics and growing areas within the labour market are discussed on pages 20 – 21. The Employment sections provides some advice on cover letters and job interviews and managing your Digital Identity.

Click here for the Options Bulletin

Student Experience and ReflectionThroughout the year there are opportunities for students to engage in. The Options Bulletin is packed with these and emails go out to the girls frequently providing enriching experiences. I asked Ria Mathew to reflect on her recent work experience with the Defence Forces.

Defence Force Work Experience – Ria MathewOn the September holidays, I had the opportunity to spend three days at the Gallipoli Barracks for work experience, alongside 28 other students from across Queensland and Victoria, to see what a career in defence truly entailed.

On day 1 we were introduced to WO1 Peter Thatcher who was leading the

program alongside Sargent Malone and Corporal Venz. We spent the day being introduced to many of the different careers in the Australian Defence Force such as in artillery and aviation as well as a thorough explanation of the recruiting process into any career in defence. On day 2, we had the chance to use the battle simulation centre and the night training facility as well as visit the 9th Battalion War Memorial Museum. We also partook in the Physical Fitness Assessment that is required to enter the Australian Army. Finally, on day 3, we saw the advanced surveillance and target acquisition equipment used both on base and in battle and ended the day with survival swimming and a ‘Ninja Warrior’-like over water obstacle course. Each day of the experience, we enjoyed a buffet lunch served at the Mess alongside the servicemen and women on site; allowing us to interact with personnel that held positions specific to what we wanted to enter.

This experience was truly an incredible opportunity and I would most definitely recommend it to anyone considering a career in defence. Currently, I hope to go through the Defence University Sponsorship (DUS) program to complete a degree in Medicine and complete multiple years as a General Practitioner in the army after. This work experience showed me what a career in the military truly captures and has made me extremely excited for what the future holds. Thanks to the College for providing and organising this placement. It truly was an experience of a lifetime and a great stepping stone in deciding my career path for the future.

Ria Mathew, Year 10

Some Year 11 students maybe considering a possible Pathway Change for 2019This is about the time when some students begin to consider a pathway change for Year 12. If your daughter is currently considering this and is looking to take up a VET qualification, the TAFE at School Guide is now available https://tafeqld.edu.au/assets/oneweb/PDF/course-guides/2019/2019-greater-brisbane-tafe-at-school-course-guide.pdf

If your daughter is considering a change, it would be great to chat with her before the end of the Term.

Understanding Teen Sleep and Its Impact on Learning and Mental HealthYouth Mental Health continues to be a major problem in our community. The webcast, Understanding teen sleep and its impact on learning and mental health, is designed to provide non-clinicians with an improved understanding of the issues. The webcast will run for 40 minutes.

The presentation details the multiple factors that cause teens to be chronically sleep deprived, which can result in multiple physical and mental health problems. Teenagers place little value on sleep and are generally poor sleep managers. Parents will learn how to implement strategies that build resilient sleep, which in

turn protects teenagers from stress induced mood disorders and optimises learning outcomes.

Dr Chris Seton in conjunction with Generation Next is running these free webcasts on Thursday 18 October. The webcast will be shown at 2:30pm and 6:00pm (AEST). Dr Seton helped establish Australia’s first Paediatric Sleep Investigations Unit at the Children’s Hospital Westmead in 1990. Dr Seton diagnoses and treats all child and adolescent sleep disorders and his particular interests include adolescent sleep problems and the impact of poor sleep on learning. 2018 YEAR OF COURAGE - LEADING WITH COURAGE

ST RITA’S COLLEGE

Over the school holidays, 14 students travelled to India on a life changing Immersion accompanied by Miss Crellin, Mrs Devine and Ms George. The first week of the Immersion was spent in Chennai in southern India, working with MITHRA - a school and home for intellectually and physically disabled children. The following is a reflection on their time at MITHRA, written by students of the Immersion.

Whilst in Chennai we were also able to visit several Presentation Schools and the Vaels International School, home to Nudhara Yusuf, winner of the Be Heard in Australia oratorical competition, who visited St Rita's in May this year. Each of these schools welcomed us with open arms and with beautiful Indian hospitality. The final few days of the immersion afforded us the opportunity to do some sightseeing in Delhi and Agra - our final sunrise being at the majestic Taj Mahal.

The India Immersion is a wonderful opportunity for students and teachers to experience the life of those living in different conditions to those we can take for granted here in Australia. We already miss the new friends we made in MITHRA and will hold the memories of this wonderful immersion in our hearts forever. When you first walk into MITHRA, you know you have entered a special place. On the first day the students greet you with their beautiful smiles and by the last day their warm greetings have turned into hugs. Everyone is so welcoming and grateful of your presence.

When watching the children in their dormitories and at lunch, they are always helping each other and despite their circumstances they are always happy. In the classrooms they are enthusiastic about their learning and are willing to share with you what they have learnt; especially nursery rhymes.

Watching the older students in the Vocational Training rooms was amazing. They are so talented and proud of their work.

At playtime the children's laughter is contagious and it is a joyous end to the day.

The Occupational Therapies and Physiotherapy techniques were at first confronting but are obviously beneficial. To see students you thought were wheelchair bound do amazing things and meet some who now run but could not even walk before.

At first you see the things that the children cannot do, but over time you begin to focus on the wonderful things they can do.

We were lucky to see the development of the new girls’ dormitory and watch men lay a path in one day. It was also a wonderful experience to be taught dances by the students who competed in a dance competition. We were also able to give to the community through our cleaning of the dining hall and dishes at lunch time.

The Sisters, teachers, workers and the students - both young and old - are all incredible human beings. They are an inspiration to us all.

MITHRA is somewhere you must experience for yourself, as no words can truly describe the miracle that goes in the place, each and every day.

2018 YEAR OF COURAGE - LEADING WITH COURAGE

ST RITA’S COLLEGE

Term 4 is always an exciting time of the year for the Music students. For those of us who have been through a few Term 4s, we all know how quickly time seems to pass but we still manage to get everything done that we need to. While it is a time for celebrating the achievements of the year at events like Music Gala and ATC, it is also a time for reflection when our musicians are involved in important events such as the Graduation Mass and Christmas Liturgy.

For our Year 12 Music students, I would encourage them to savour every ‘last’ moment of performance. My hope for many of these students would to see them continue with their music in some form or other no matter what path they decide to take. There is a great deal of enjoyment that music could continue to provide them and also to others who listen to them perform. As always, it has been a pleasure to see this year’s Music leaders grow into exceptional young women and it has been a privilege to walk with them on this path – as it was this group of Year 12s who arrived at St Rita’s at the same time I did.

Music GalaIn the spirit of celebrating the year’s achievements and the Year 12 Music students, our Music Gala will be held on Friday 2 November starting at 6:30pm in Eirene Hall. The concert will be longer than our usual concerts as it involves all ensembles, finishing at approximately 9:00pm. Families are invited to bring along their own

refreshments and feel free to eat, drink and replenish during the performances. This is always a very enjoyable evening where we also invite our new 2019, Year 7 students to join with our ensembles and see our Music community in action.

AHEP and SHEPCongratulations to all of the girls who participated in the State Honours Ensemble Program and the Australian Honours Ensemble Program over the September holidays. Eighteen of our girls were involved in this four-day intensive program that gave them the opportunity to work with some exceptional international conductors at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. Ending the program with performances in the beautiful Conservatorium Theatre, all of these girls reported that they had a wonderful time and gained a great deal from participating in the program.

In the first week of the September holidays, two Year 12 and six Year 11 students embarked on the Longreach Immersion; a chance to leave their city lives behind and experience true, Australian, country life. After a two hour flight arriving at Longreach, the eight students split into two groups and travelled another two hours by highway and dirt roads to finally reach the host family properties. While both groups had varying experiences, some of the many different and challenging activities included driving quad bikes around the tracks surrounding the homestead, bumping along dirt roads to different paddocks around the 79,000 acre property, feeding both merino and dorper sheep, saving, raising and naming poddy lambs, observing a dingo fence being built, watching a water bore being pulled up, and swimming and canoeing in dams. These unforgettable experiences made it almost impossible to leave, as we grew attached to the freedom of the country and felt like new members of our host families. We all learnt that life on properties is busy and interesting. We recommend to everyone to take up this unmissable opportunity, to experience country life and understand the hardships for Australian farmers.

SPORTWristbands for Alex - Your support is needed!

In Term 3, Nudgee College student Alexander Clark suffered a serious neck injury whilst playing rugby at Nudgee. News of Alex’s injury came through ironically when St Rita’s was on Track & Field camp.

Alex represented Nudgee College at the senior GPS Track & Field Championships in 2016 and 2017 in hurdles and the 4x100m relay. Last year he won the 14yrs 100m Hurdles Bronze medal at the Queensland Secondary Schools Championships.

Alex is a very talented, brave and courageous hurdler. He is drawing on all that courage and more as he makes his recovery. The Be Strong Alex wrist bands the College is selling are only $2.00 and, rather than being a fundraiser, are designed to be worn as a sign of support for Alexander.

Wristbands can be purchased from Mrs Hawley at Student Services or from Ellen Kropp (Year 11) at most lunchtimes in the College grounds. Price is $2.00.

Mrs Morrow and Ms Allen have approved the wearing of the wristbands at any time during Term 4, to, at and from school, except when students are on official school representative duties such as the Annual Thanksgiving Celebration, Graduation Mass, etc.

Your support to Alexander is greatly appreciated.
