Borrow Some Tools
Don’t forget that one benefit of being a member of the DuPage Woodworkers is that
we have some tools that you can borrow. The Work Sharp, scroll saw, moisture me-
ter, metal detector, and Drill Doctor are available to members by contacting Wayne
Maier at 630-303-1341.
If you missed the April meeting you missed a great meeting. The 'From Our Workshop' portion was outstanding. We had tables. Some for the home and one for the garden. One of the tables had a gorgeous curly cherry veneer top that should in-spire us all to think of how veneer can enhance our projects. It was nice to hear that it was applied without any expensive ve-neering equipment. The veneer was added with clamps (many clamps). We also had some beautiful turnings, both in design and
choices of wood. If that was not enough, we had intarsia, a mirror with some elegant detail surrounding it. We also had a portable vise. I'm probably leaving out some other interesting items. Check out the pictures from the FOW. You will be impressed with what the club has in the range of skills. One last mention about the FOW portion of the meeting is that, I would not want anyone to be intimidated by this month's excellent showing and not bring your objects to the FOW. FOW is not a competition. It is a sharing of what we, as woodworkers are inter-ested in. This month's showing was wonderful in the number of participants and the range of talents. What you are seeing are skills that are present in the clubs and are available to you by engaging with our members who are always willing to share their knowledge. I'm pleased to say that we had 15 toy packets picked up at this month's meeting. That is another 150 toys committed to. Thanks to Owl for the cutoff and Al Rieman who picked them up and even glued a number of them. Look for more wood that can be used for toys at our future meetings. Thanks to Jeff and our program people for the laser program presentation We had some nice comments about this month's sound system. Thanks to Bert for bringing the sound system from the Windy City Turning Club. It appears to be a signifi-cant improvement over what we have used in the past. We will be reviewing it at the board meeting. As always watch for our general meeting schedule. The hall has not always been avail-able for our normal meeting on the 4th week of the month. The May general meeting will be on May 18th which is the 3rd Wednesday in May. Annual Tool Auction in August The Dupage Woodworker's annual tool auction is scheduled for August 13, 2016. This is later than normal due to hall availability.

Secretary’s Report May Board Meeting -- May 2, 2016
Ed Buhot called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m. Present were Bert LeLoup, Mike Kalscheur, Whit Anderson, Dave Brearley, Lee Nye, Stan Anderson, Mark Wieting, Rich Rossio, Keith Rosche, Tony Evansky, Eleanor Richards, Will Richards, and Jerry Johnson. Reminder: Any club member is invited to attend
board meetings.
The March minutes were approved. The treasurer’s report was approved. There was no April meeting.
President’s Communication Ed viewed the board calendar and took several actions. First was to name Jerry Johnson and Rich Rossio as co-chairs of the auction. It was noted that the St. James facility will not be available for the entire month of July so the auc-tion will need to be moved into August. As a result, the pub-licity outside the club will be more important than ever. The following board members will announce auction information as noted: Lee – Fox Valley Bert – Windy City and Chicago Rich – Suburban and Hickory Hills The May general meeting will be May 18 (3
rd Wed); June
will be June 29 (5th Wed). These changes are due to the
church needing to accommodate the lost month of July due to some needed renovation. Ed will reserve space at the Bohemian Crystal for the holi-day party again this year. Their service was much improved last year and it is affordable. Ed’s remaining comments are folded into the other parts of the minutes for continuity. Committee Reports Membership – Twenty individuals were dropped from the roster for non-renewal; but new member growth has been strong resulting in a current total of 160 according to Mike. Toys – Al Reiman delivered cutoffs from Owl and all were claimed for toy making. Stan said wheels and axles for 150 vehicles were picked up at the April meeting. Ed will check with Woodcraft for availability of their shop for a toy work-shop. Rich offered to host a turning workshop the first week in September for tops and bangles. Library – Will plans to do an inventory of the contents this summer and plans to continue to purge VHS tapes to provide room for more timely material.
Publicity – It was noted that many newspapers have discon-tinued or severely reduced the space where we have been able to publicize the club and its activities. Eleanor suggested we look at using Facebook due to its widespread use. Newsletter -- Bert is planning to reserve a page in the news-letter for traceable toy plans to encourage a broader spec-trum of members to participate. He also said Ariel 10 is the preferred font style for submitting newsletter copy. Activities – Mark described the June 4 tour of First Church of Lombard. The board confirmed the $5/person fee and that all of it will be donated to the church. Programs – Rich felt there is a good chance the Morton Arbo-retum speaker can accommodate the meeting date change from 5/25 to 5/18. If not, he will find something else of inter-est. He also said there is a chance we may be able to obtain some wood from the arboretum. Old Business After the experience with the trial audio system, it became obvious the next step in deciding whether to acquire a hand-held video camera is to find one that can be used on a trial basis. See New Business item below. The board agreed with the latest draft proposal to create a short video about the club for informational purposes. Mark will proceed with preparation of a draft script and forward it to Ed for distribution to the board members. New Business The audio trial of the Windy City system arranged by Bert was a huge success. There were many comments in the vein of “first time I’ve heard everything at the meeting.” Neverthe-less, the system as trialed has limitations that would be nice to overcome. Several items were noted e.g., a second speaker, a/c power, and second wireless microphone. Lee and Whit will investigate feasibility and cost. We need a volunteer for a Rockler in-store show on July 16m 2016. Ed will pursue. The meeting adjourned about 8:20 p.m. Jerry Johnson, Secretary

PROGRAM
The Auction Is Coming! The Auction Is Coming! It’s time to start thinking about tools you need and tools you don’t use anymore. I almost said tools you don’t need but there is no such thing. However, if that “needed” tool is tak-ing up space that could be used for a different one, it’s time to bring it to the auction. The annual action will be held August 13 th. at St James starting at 9:00 am with setup beginning at 8:00 am. If you have items that you know you will be offering at the auction, send me a brief description of the most desirable ones and I’ll mention them in the June and/or July Newslet-ter. The more items we can identify in advance, the more bidders will attend. Jerry Johnson [email protected].
AUCTION
The library will be doing an inventory over the summer, so make sure to check your workshop for any books that you might have overdue. Please bring those in to the next meeting! If you have any overdue materials I will be sending you an email notification.
LIBRARY
One more reminder! If you have sug-gestions for books or videos for the Library. Let me know. If purchased you will be first to check it out.

TOYS
Stan Anderson
Congratulations:
At the last meeting club members
picked up15 bags of wheels and
axles to make toys for our annual
toy drive. These toys will be distrib-
uted to some local charities. Each
bag has parts to make 10 toys.
As you know there are plans and patterns for most of the
toys displayed on the table. However, your creative designs
are always welcome.
Remember, loose small parts are not permitted nor are
small toys. We make only bare wood toys. However, to jazz
up the toy try some artistic wood burning or adding some
design holes to accent your toy.
Remember, we pick up the toys at the November meetin.
Lets keep those chips flying. Plans, patters & wheels are
available at the May meeting.

Club Activity
Visit to Maple Street Chapel,
built in 1870
Saturday, June 4, 10:00 am, Main and Maple
Streets, Lombard
On the National Register of Historic Places
since 1978, the Maple Street Chapel pre-
sents interesting woodworking challenges
both inside and out. Its board and batten siding common to
carpenter gothic construction rises toward the top of its 100-
foot steeple. Its belfry supports an 800 lb. bell that in the early
days served both as a call to worship and to summon the
town’s volunteer fire fighters. Modeled after churches its foun-
ders had seen in and around Boston, it is a rectangular gable-
roof Gothic Revival style. It has been designated by the Ameri-
can Institute of Architects as one of 150 buildings in Illinois
that people should visit for its architectural features. Its pews
and wide-plank pine flooring are original and the wainscoting
and other wood details date to 1896. The 6-foot-tall cross at
the top of the steeple is its third, the first two having been hit
by lightning over the years; it now has an internal lightning rod.
Leading our tour will be Kenneth Bohl, facilities director of the
Maple Street Chapel Preservation Society, the non-profit or-
ganization charged with maintaining and improving the chapel.
He will discuss some of the challenges of taking care of a 145-
year-old building, particularly the woodworking issues. We’ll
also learn about the history of the building, which served as a
town meeting hall, its first library, and silent movie theater.
Parking is available on West Maple St., and across from the
Lombard Historical Museum at the corner of Maple St. and
Park Ave., one block west of Main St.

DPWW Meeting Location
New Members
The DuPage Woodworkers welcomes members from all over the region. Our members consist of all skill levels; from beginners to professionals. Meetings and field trips provide an opportunity to gain and share knowledge about woodworking. Our regular meetings are once a month for about 2 1/2 hours. Meetings (usually the fourth Wednes-day of the month) consist of some announcements about activities, a short discussion of any woodworking prob-lems that members want to ask about, a drawing for wood-working prizes, and a presentation on some aspect of
woodworking.
If you are interested in joining the DuPage Woodworkers, you are invited to attend a meeting. If you become a mem-ber, dues are twenty-five dollars per year. Membership entitles you to attend meetings, to go on field trips (shop visits, woodworking businesses, etc.), and a discount at
several local woodworking supply companies.
