Recently I made a Sandringham Council-run bus trip to Rosebud (actually an unusual name for a seaside town). The place has changed - for the better I think.

Many of the old holiday shacks from former times, on horribly overgrown blocks of land along the main through-road, (Nepean Highway) don't exist anymore! ‘Real’ houses and nice gardens face the road now. The foreshore too looks so much better. No more fallen-over tea trees and tumbled dead wood lying about. The foreshore, in most places resembles parkland. The caravan parks are still there but also clean and tidy, with nice 'controlled' vegetation.

Because this trip was meant to be a 'scenic drive' we travelled the whole length of sea shore from Rosebud to Sorrento then cut through to Rye Back Beach -which was windy, of course and a rough sea.

Even nearby Red Hill is settled now. What a view those houses must have! In other words, the whole lot- the town below and the sea, right to the horizon!

These Council bus trips (small bus) are wonderful! The places they take us to! One always hears comments like- "I haven't been here for 30 years" or "we always hired a caravan on school holidays" and so forth from passengers, while we drive on. Lunch is usually in a Pub or RSL venue and we pay ourselves for that.

The trips are always on Tuesdays - the quiet days for restaurants and little businesses, so it helps the economy as well.

I do think we (oldies) are lucky -We get free travel on weekends, reduced fare during the week. Yes, we should not travel in peak-times, but it does not matter, we have the time.

OUR WEBSITE Go to: www.life.org.au/sandringham for calendar of events, current and past newsletters, photo gallery, loads of information about the club activities and all the latest news. CLUB HALL SECURITY Our club hall is an excellent facility and we must be diligent in protecting it from unauthorised entry.

If the hall is opened by unlocking a door on the Abbott St. side or the rear car park, it must be locked again with the key immediately after entering. These doors can be easily checked from the outside. If that’s not convenient, open the door from the inside, then operate the outside handle while watching the latch. If the latch moves, the door is unlocked and must be locked with a key.

These checks need to be done EVERY TIME those responsible or the last person leaves the venue.

SHORT TERM ACCOMMODATION NEEDED

Earlier last year we had a visitor to our Club, Maggie Hamilton from Scotland. Maggie attended a few activities including a game of table tennis, the exercise class and had a game of Scrabble also. Maggie was visiting her daughter at the time and then returned to Scotland. Maggie is now in the process of selling her house and immigrating to Australia and has asked if anyone could help with some short term accommodation until her furniture arrives from Scotland. The dates are still a bit uncertain. Maggie would be looking for furnished accommodation or lodgings of some sort, hopefully in Sandringham to be near her family. It seems Maggie will become a potential new member to our Club and if anyone can help, her email address is [email protected]

MASONIC HALL – SANDRINGHAM

At our Club’s AGM on the 3rd August, representatives from Bayside City Council provided an update on the projects that are planned for the Sandringham precinct. In recent months Council has purchased the historic former Masonic Hall on Abbott Street in Sandringham for community use. Once renovation works are complete, the Masonic Hall will provide a

new home for the Sandringham Life Activities Club and Sandringham Historic Society. Upgrades to the Masonic Hall are required and the Club’s committee will be involved regarding the internal design and works. Renovations to expand the library are planned and these works will commence prior to the completion of the Masonic Hall works. Council is therefore pursuing options for an alternative building for SLAC for a period of between 12 – 18 months. It is expected the relocation will need to occur from early 2019. A morning tea is being planned by Council to enable Sandringham Life Activities Club members to visit the hall. However, please be aware the Hall is yet to be refurbished and access to the Hall is via a small number of steps. Council has committed funds to refurbish the Hall in 2019. Date: Friday 7th September Time: 10.30am Place: Masonic Hall, 23 Abbott Street

This morning tea will be in place of the Club’s usual 1st Friday of the month morning tea.

AIR BAG SAFETY CHECK

A quick way to check the safety of your air bag is to enter your number plate at https://ismyairbagsafe.com.au/

It only takes a minute to check it out for peace of mind. As many as two in every seven vehicles in Australia have been installed with faulty Takata airbags that have the potential to seriously injure or even kill their drivers

and passengers.
