We, the parish of Saints Mary and Mathias Catholic Church, WELCOME all to CELEBRATE, TEACH and LIVE the Mission of JESUS CHRIST
Ss. Mary & Mathias Church 215 W. 8th St. Muscatine, IA 52761
From the Pastors Desk February 16th , 2020
Admittedly, there are times when we are tempted to do the minimum required. Whether writing the minimum number of pages required on the term paper, doing the minimum amount of work required during our work day, or getting the minimum number of sales to reach our monthly quo-ta, the minimalist approach to life can be very alluring.
Today, Jesus makes it very clear that being His committed disciple requires more than the mini-mum of keeping the commandments, at least in a literal sense. To enter the Kingdom of Heaven, our righteousness must surpass that of the Scribes and the Pharisees, who were famous for keep-ing the letter of the law. They, however, lacked one essential ingredient, that of love.
The Scribes and Pharisees were motivated by fear, the fear of breaking the least of the letter of the law. Once we have encountered Christ, we are no longer motivated by fear. Rather, we are moti-vated by our love for the Lord and our desire to make His love known to all.
We are currently making preparations for our parish’s Light of the World Retreat which will take place from March 27-20. At this retreat, you will experience this life-changing encounter with Je-sus, the Living Lord, and experience Christ’s love and the work of the Holy Spirit in a new way. If you have not had the opportunity to attend one of our past Light of the World retreats, prayerfully consider doing so this Lent. If you have attended Light of the World in the past, consider personally inviting a fellow-parishioner, friend, spouse, or family member to attend. In either case, please begin to pray for the success of this year’s Light of the World Retreat. Pray that this retreat weekend will draw all who attend into a deeper relationship with Jesus the Lord.
CALLED BY NAME
All the parishes of the Diocese of Davenport are participating in Called by Name, a program of voca-tions awareness that begins this weekend. This program offers an opportunity for us to pray for vocations; to recognize gifts and potential for lead-ership and service in members of our parish; and finally, to call forth and encourage these members to share their gifts in priesthood, diaconate and consecrated life. Perhaps you know a man or woman (sophomore in high school and older) who would, in your opinion, have the qualities to be-come a priest, sister, or brother. Please recom-mend this person by filling out the response card found in church. Next weekend, place the com-pleted card in the collection basket.
2019 - 2020 ADA UPDATE
Thanks to the 306 parish families who have sup-ported this year’s ADA, we have received pledg-es in the amout of $116,055. This is approxi-mately $1,700 in excess of our parish’s ADA Goal of $114,383. The Diocese has received $91,174.34 in payments credited towards our goal. Thank you for joining me in fulfilling your pledge to this year’s Annual Diocesan Appeal and helping our parish to exceed our goal! To celebrate, come join us at our Mardi Gras Soup Supper next Sunday evening. Come enjoy Fr. Hai’s priceless egg rolls, and Fr. Troy’s famous Jambalaya, and a taste of Fr. Troy’s home brewed beer.
