Edison’s son Charles ran about frantically trying to find his father. Finally, he came upon him, standing near the fire, his face ruddy in the glow, his white hair blown by the winter winds. “My heart ached for him,” Charles Edison said. “He was no longer young, and everything was being destroyed. He spotted me. “Where’s your mother?” he shouted. “Find her. Bring her here. She’ll never see anything like this again as long as she lives.” The next morning, walking about the charred embers of so many of his hopes and dreams, the sixty-seven-year-old Edison said, “There is great value in disaster. All our mistakes are burned up. Thank God we can start anew.” The Bible teaches us that every day in Christ is a new day: a day to begin again…to correct old mistakes…to begin new projects…to give and receive forgiveness…to rejoice in the present. Here are some attributes to help you develop your resiliency to life and its challenges: Be curious, play and laugh. Life’s best survivors have a child-like curiosity. Learn from unpleasant experiences. Treat difficult situations like a workout at the gym. You do your very best, pause afterward to reflect on what happened, and ask, “What can I learn from this?” Then imagine yourself doing better next time. Increase your self-esteem. Self-esteem works like a thick skin or blanket of energy around you. Be empathetic toward everyone…including difficult people. Expect your outcomes to be good ones! In September, many of us “begin again” as the new school year begins: Vacation time is over and it’s time to return to our regular routines. There are numerous opportunities for everyone to grow and serve and learn in this new academic year. My prayer for you is that you will grow in your faith in this new season…and that you will look to Christ as you face the challenges and chances of life.
