FROM THE PASTOR
Monday, May 25th is Memorial Day. The parish office will be closed that day in observance of the holiday. On this day, the United States honors and remembers those who gave their lives while serving in the Armed Forces. As a holiday, Memorial Day began in an unofficial manner after the Civil War, in both the North and the South, as a way of paying honor to those who died (the Civil War remains the bloodiest war in U.S. history). Decorating the graves of those who died in the war gave the holiday its "original" name: Decoration Day. Although it began to be known as Memorial Day as early as 1882, the name of the holiday was not officially designated by federal law until 1967.
Ordinarily, we would have a brief ceremony for Memorial Day at the flagpole after the 9:30 a.m. Mass this Sunday, however, given current circumstances and restrictions, that ceremony will not take place this year.
Next Saturday, May 30th (Vigil of Pentecost), at the 5 p.m. Mass I will be baptizing and receiving into the Church the members of this year's RCIA class. Usually that would have happened at the Easter Vigil, but we all know what was going on then. Please remember these people in your prayers -- they've had to wait some extra time, but we are all grateful that the day is soon here.
Phishing scams: this is an email scam in which a ne'er-do-well creates a false email account claiming to be another person and then solicits donations (in the form of money or gift cards), usually claiming some sort of hardship. Since the false email account uses the name of a person the recipient is very likely to know personally, many people fall victim to this sort of scam. Let me be perfectly clear: you will NEVER receive an email from me claiming some sort of hardship and asking you to buy me an iTunes card or an Amazon card or to send me any money. IGNORE and DELETE such emails. Additionally, you will NEVER receive an email purporting to be from the parish which asks you to click on any mysterious links in order to donate to some parish need. DO NOT RESPOND to such emails! If you are in any doubt about an email communication you receive that is supposedly from me, any member of the staff, or the parish, please call the office and verify its authenticity. Fr. Tebalt
