We have a great team on the Board of Directors, as well as you, the volunteers, that help make our club a special group of people who like to hang out and have fun with each other. Our 2018 Commodore’s Ball was a spectacular evening as we celebrated Jim Barrett’s dedication and leadership at the helm of our ship. We are not letting him power off into the horizon just yet because website and online communication still needs him to captain that vessel. Jim and his first mate Linda have given so much time to the yacht club and it was truly a joy to spend time with their children, their spouses and grandchildren as we celebrated Jim. The evening would not have been as entertaining without Tom Ihrig at the podium as he presented all the colorful moments of Jim’s successful life before SBYC, and it was only fitting to serve Jim a growler of beer to make it his night! Jim toasted all the new officers and I had the pleasure of presenting him with his Past Commodore bur- gee, jacket and a beautiful remake of the original painting done by Pien Ellis of Part Two. In addition to that, all of you donated to the Friendship House $3,010.00. The donation will help provide the much needed help that this wonderful organization gives to many in Skagit Valley. I really am touched at your generosity! Thank you! I had the honor of presenting our Unsung Yachtsman Award this year to Linda Barrett who has given over a decade of dedication and service to our club. It really was quite fun keeping her from finding out that she was the recipient this year as Jim and I talked in code, sent nothing by email or text. Linda, Thank You for all your time and help! I want to wish all of you for 2018 a Happy New Year! Many of you are

starting off 2018 in warm sunny places while some of us are here

enjoying the sun minus the warm temperatures in the PNW. Your new board has been planning away to make 2018 a fun and exciting year on

land and on the water. We have a great team on the Board of Directors,

as well as you, the volunteers, that help make our club a special group

of people who like to hang out and have fun with each other. Jim and

Linda Barrett hosted their Volunteer Appreciation Social at the

Shelter Bay Community Center in December and as usual Linda, with a few extra hands from her daughter Aly and Carole Miller, did a fabulous job making it a

memorable evening for those who attended. That’s right, 129 of you gave your hard work

and time to the yacht club throughout 2017 to make all of our events and cruises special.

Our 2018 Commodore’s Ball was a spectacular evening as we celebrated Jim Barrett’s dedication and leadership at the helm of our ship. We are not letting him power off into

the horizon just yet because website and online communication still needs him to captain

that vessel. Jim and his first mate Linda have given so much time to the yacht club and it

was truly a joy to spend time with their children, their spouses and grandchildren as we

celebrated Jim. The evening would not have been as entertaining without Tom Ihrig at

the podium as he presented all the colorful moments of Jim’s successful life before SBYC, and it was only fitting to serve Jim a growler of beer to make it his night! Jim toasted all

the new officers and I had the pleasure of presenting him with his Past Commodore bur-

gee, jacket and a beautiful remake of the original painting done by Pien Ellis of Part Two.

In addition to that, all of you donated to the Friendship House $3,010.00. The

donation will help provide the much needed help that this wonderful organization gives to many in Skagit Valley. I really am touched at your generosity! Thank you!

I had the honor of presenting our Unsung Yachtsman

Award this year to Linda Barrett who has given over a

decade of dedication and service to our club. It really

was quite fun keeping her from finding out that she was the recipient this year as Jim and I talked in code,

sent nothing by email or text. Linda, Thank You for all

your time and help!

Vice Commodore—Jon Galbraith

And just like that, we’re into a brand-new year. I think it’s going to be a great one, and I’m

looking forward to being a part of it with all of you as your 2018 Vice Commodore. In that

role, my primary duty to our club this year is communication. Traditionally, the Dolphin is

the main way that we share information, and while a monthly newsletter like this is one good

way to get the word out, this year I’ll be looking into additional ways to keep people up to

date. The officers and I have been discussing how to use social medial (such as Facebook) as a way for our club members to share information with each other in a way that’s fast, safe,

and fun. An example is the sharing of cruising plans and the coordination of meet-ups on

the water once underway. Bill Davis, our new Fleet Captain, has a bit more to say on this topic in his

column as well. More to come. Speaking of the Dolphin, thanks to requests from many of you, we’re bringing back the calendar of our entire

year’s events in each issue (you’ll find it on page 7 this month). If you have other ideas that would make the

Dolphin more useful to you, please let me know. In closing this month’s column, I’d like to recognize the following club members who have volunteered to fill

our many appointed positions. These individuals provide important functions to our club that often go unnoticed. Please join me in offering a hearty Thank You to each of them:

Welcome to 2018! We start the year by welcoming new members Ray and Linda

Maly. They reside on Shelter Bay Drive and have their 30 foot Catalina Sail Boat moored

on D Dock.

They love sailing with their dog Max! They have recently retired as Registered Nurses. Ray

has taken charge of the kitchen, while Linda attends to the gardening and yard

work. Welcome.

Commodore—Terry Sigmond (Cont)

My last Thank You is to hosts Betty Foster and Debbie Galbraith

for making the Commodore’s Ball a very elegant and special evening

for everyone. We enjoyed French 75 Cocktails in Jackie McKean’s crystal punch bowl, Gere-a Deli catered the delicious prime rib

dinner and we danced our shoes off to the tunes of Deception

Connection! Many thanks go out to your crew of Jon Galbraith,

Jim Foster, Tom and Dee Ihrig, Bob and JB Taylor, Jackie

McKean, Rod Proctor and Lynn Ries, Mike and Dottie Price,

David and Jane Edgley, and Ken and Marnie Lee. And special thanks to the guys who always seem to show up whenever help is

needed: WC Harvey, Bill Davis, and Rob Hays. Wow! I am always available if any of you have any questions or need to talk with me. You can feel free to

email me at [email protected] or call me at 360-333-5510. Your 2018 board has some changes in

store for this year. One of those is to try to save money on Dolphin printing and mailing costs by only

mailing it to those of you who specifically request a printed copy. The Dolphin will be available online for

you to read around the 1st of each month, and you’ll receive an email from our webmaster as soon as it has been posted. If you wish to continue receiving a printed Dolphin in the mail, please call or email me.

From the Clubhouse—Rear Commodore, Ken Olsen

I would first like to thank Jon Galbraith for his exceptional service to our Club this last year. His efforts have resulted in a full slate of clubhouse events already scheduled for 2018.

He leaves some really big shoes to fill. I am honored to be selected to serve on the Bridge in

2018 and will do everything in my power to serve the membership in my position as Rear

Commodore, and look forward to working with dinner hosts to create another memorable

year of club activities. I will take over dinner and reservation coordination in January, and stand ready to assist our dinner hosts with event coordination at all levels. I also look

forward to assembling a great list of dinner hosts for future events, please contact me with your ideas. A

friendly reminder that will help enormously with event administration: when you pay for a dinner event with a check, please either put it in the box in the Shelter Bay office or give it directly to me. When checks are given

directly to our Treasurer, Commodore, or anyone other than the Rear Commodore, it makes it difficult to

reconcile who has or hasn’t paid. Thanks. January Clubhouse Dinner – January 20

January features our annual no-cost Soup Dinner, hosted this year by Bill Plummer and Jennifer

Johnston. This year’s theme is Ladies Night Out (meaning the men will be doing the cooking). BYOB Happy Hour starts at 5:30, followed by dinner. After dinner, and not to be missed, is Jim Barrett’s Year in

Review and then Bingo. We’ll be using this dinner to conduct our annual La Conner Food Bank drive so

bring your donations of non-perishable food (cans preferred). Registration is now open, so get your name on

the list for this free and fun season opener! February Clubhouse Dinner – February 17

In February we can look forward to our excellent Crab Feed, hosted by Elizabeth and Ron Scott and their

crew of crabbers. This crew has done this before and they know how to put on a good show, so be sure to get this on your calendar as reservations open in mid-January and will fill up quickly. As you can see 2018 is starting out with a Bang. If you'd like to get involved, reach out to our dinner hosts and offer to help -- or you can always contact me at [email protected]. If you have an idea for a

future dinner event, it's not too soon to start thinking about 2019 -- let me know if you'd like to get on next

year's calendar as a dinner host. This club runs on your participation!

Training Coordinator—Jack Cheetham

The January 8th training session will

be "Skagit Sets Sail" presented by Jo

Wolfe, Director of the Skagit County Historical Museum. The February 5th training session will be presented by one of our new mem-

bers, Mr. Paul Larsen, on “If you can

travel to the San Juans, you can

make it to Alaska.” He will be sharing

his experiences and knowledge navigating from Washington to Alaska over 20 times. Please contact me if you are interested in presenting a training session in the future. I have March and April

still open.

This Year’s Christmas Boat Parade

At least 6 boats from SBYC joined the Swinomish

Yacht Club for its annual Boat Parade the evening of

December 9. The La Conner Weekly news called it

“the best boat parade ever” and said there may have been over 1,000 people watching from town. Thanks

go to Larry and Nadine Lien (who won for Best

Lighted Boat!) for organizing our club’s participation in

this year’s event, and to all of you who participated.

From the Charthouse—Fleet Captain, Bill Davis

Greetings SBYC Cruisers: We have made great progress getting Port Hosts and starting to organize the Shakedown Cruise in April, the Vice Commodore's Cruise in June, the

Commodore's Cruise in July, and the Sucia Island Cruise in September. You can check

the SBYC website for cruise dates and details, but I'm pleased to tell you that as of this

writing, we have Port Hosts for all these cruises except for one port, and that is at Lopez

Island Resort in Fisherman's Bay, June 8th-10th. Actually, with all the facilities provided by Lopez Island Resort, this should be one of the easiest locations to host, so please let me

know if you have any interest in volunteering to host at Fisherman's Bay. This leaves only August to be organized for local as well as extended cruising opportunities. As previously discussed, we will be posting the itinerary for at least one non-hosted extended cruise north in August, which I will lead, to Princess Louisa Inlet. It is hoped that we will get at least one other

experienced cruiser to do the same for another northern destination, possibly Desolation Sound. The intent

is to make it easy for SBYC members who are cruising north to rendezvous at any of the different ports of

call in order to catch up with friends and share cruising experiences. But equally important, we want to

provide this as an opportunity for SBYC members to tag along with our more experienced boaters, to ask for

advice and gain confidence, so that less experienced boaters can expand their horizons and experience more of what the beautiful Northwest has to offer. While this is still in the planning stage, what we envision is a

pre-cruise meeting to discuss and create an itinerary with interested participants, and also exchange and

update contact information, including cellular phone numbers and email addresses to facilitate

communication during the cruise. We have also asked our Webmaster Jim Barrett to establish a page on

the SBYC website where we can post the cruise itinerary and update it with any changes that may occur due

to weather or other issues, and Jim is already working to accomplish that. For those not interested in going further north in August, we may have short cruises in the San Juan

Islands or the Gulf Islands or both. Our recent survey showed there is some interest in having such cruises in August, but none of the SBYC Flag Officers will be that far south in August, so we are entirely dependent

upon Port Hosts for these cruises. So if you are interested in being a Port Host for an organized cruise to

any port or ports in the San Juan Islands and/or Canadian Gulf Islands in August, please let me know and I

will assist you in getting the cruise(s) organized. I thank you all for your support as I assume my new position as Fleet Captain. If you have questions,

suggestions or would like to volunteer to be a Port Host, please email me at: [email protected]. I hope

that together we can make 2018 one of the most memorable cruising years ever to be sailed under the SBYC burgee! Yours at anchor, Bill

RECIPROCAL PROGRAM TERMS

Shelter Bay Marina is allowing the Yacht Club to use slip E 20 on the south side of the new dock, on a first come first served basis for our Reciprocal Program. We have to pay a small fee to the Marina for each use of

this slip. In addition, would like to be able to offer Yacht Club member’s slips in the main and division 5

marina’s during the summer months. The Board approved payment of $15/day for use of your slip while

you are away. Please contact Kendra at 466-3805 in the Community Office to list your slip. We will be

working with the Community to make sure our Marina and Yacht Club are a welcoming site for reciprocal visitors.
