And as rightly suggested in the above quote, finding enjoyment in everyday work has been an important success mantra in bringing us to our current standing. Although the act of constructing a building may not seem like a fun activity in all circumstances, we have always focused on finding enjoyment in elements of everyday work. The pleasure of delivering a good quality product every day, the fun in innovating and implementing new techniques and the joy in harbouring a healthy work environment are all facets of enjoyment that keep us ticking. At SJ Contracts, we will keep working towards drawing this alignment within every one of our team members and with all our external stakeholders as well. SJ Contracts has been extensively using GGBS as a replacement for cement in its RMC (Ready Mix Concrete) production as well. We have been able to achieve an average 50% replacement, and at a few projects, we have even replaced GGBS with cement to the extent of 70%. GGBS is a byproduct of iron and steel furnace making operations and hence its use as a replacement for cement has proven to be of great help towards conserving natural resources used in the production of cement. Recently, our Material Partner JSW Cement shared some staggering numbers in this regard. Considering the quantum of GGBS that SJ Contracts has consumed over the past three years, we have been able to avoid 32,000 tonnes of cement consumption. As a result, we have been able to indirectly conserve approximately 45,000 tonnes of natural limestone reserves and also have been able to avoid about 30,000 tonnes of carbon emissions. We feel proud to have such an impact as a result of our decisions related to material consumption, and we are also thankful to our material partner JSW Cement! Women Labour Skill Upgradation Program

Women make a large part of our working force and words can fall short to express our respect towards them. Managing homes, children, and work, these women form the crux of our labour pool and we are always striving to help them enhance their skills and make them more independent.

In May, SJ Contracts joined hands with the Kushal initiative of the CREDAI Pune Metro for a training program exclusively for women labourers. Kushal is a Labourer Training Unit of CREDAI (Confederation of Real Estate Developers Associations of India) Pune Metro, an apex body for private real estate developers in India.

CREDAI chose SJ Contracts’ project Adreno Towers at Amanora Park Town to conduct this ‘Women Worker Skill Development’ program. Thirty women labourers were imparted a 30-day training program on Masonry Trade and Soft Skill. The program not only added to these diligent women’s skills but also mustered a sense of independence in them. They will now start working as skilled masons and earn a higher wage as well.

It was great to see these women receive a lot of encouragement from the SJ Contracts site team throughout the program. We also thank the Kushal CREDAI team to choose us as their partners in this development initiative and we have already planned to schedule more training like this across other projects of SJ Contracts.

    Rakhi for The Nation

The coinciding of Rakshabandhan with Independence Day added a new enthusiasm to our celebrations, this 15th August. We decided to give a new meaning to this special bond of love and protection by appreciating the ultimate saviours of our Nation – the Indian Defence Forces.

Both male and female employees wrote personalised messages along with a Rakhi as a mark of respect towards our brave-hearts. Some expressed their feelings through hand-made greeting cards, some drew themed sketches and some even wrote heartfelt poems for them. It was great to see that many even involved their family and children in this activity. Receiving a reply from the commanding ocer of the Maratha Light Infantry thanking us for this special gesture was the highlight of this activity!

    Flood Victim Support

This year, heavy rains in Pune resulted in major oods across the city, disrupting the lives of thousands of citizens. This really had some of our employees concerned and determined to get the city to get back on its feet. And so, we put together a team of willing employees and labour for 3 days to go out and contribute to the eorts of the city’s administration. Help was provided in cleaning operations in the ood-aected areas of Bibwewadi, Parvati Paytha, and Dandekar bridge.

Appreciating this philanthropic gesture of the SJ Contracts team, we also received calls from local corporators to thank us. The initiative for this was taken by a pro-active group of employees within SJ Contracts. We feel proud to have a motivated team where a sense of individual responsibility is taking root and people at an individual level are becoming more responsible in their actions, thereby positively impacting communities and people!

    CSR Initiative

    Tree Plantation Drive

Like every year, SJ Contracts organised a Tree Plantation Drive on the Baner Hills. This year we partnered with the Vasundhara Abhiyan Baner: a movement by people for the plantation and upkeep of trees on the Baner hills. We made a conscious choice to plant over 600 indigenous trees based on advice from the Vasundhara Abhiyan. Research data shows that the planting of trees indigenous to a particular area brings monsoons and even increases the fertility of the soil. We planted saplings of medicinal varieties such as Amla, Bel, Rudraksh and Raktchandan as well as fragrances, spices and fruit-bearing plants like Mango, Shikakai, Sonchapha, and Lakshman phal amongst others. This act of commitment towards Mother Nature witnessed an attendance of over 500 SJCPL employees along with their families on a misty Sunday morning!

Working Towards Employee Well-being Through Mindfulness

Making work an enjoyable experience and ensuring the wellbeing of everyone is certainly a priority at SJ Contracts. At the same time, working in a construction company is very demanding — both physically and mentally. Physical burnouts, mental stress, loss of focus leading to poor decision-making are unfortunate outcomes that we have, ourselves, witnessed in the past. Considering the same, we recently introduced an employee wellbeing initiative through which we will strive to assist, train and equip our colleagues with knowledge and tools to help prevent adverse physiological or mental health issues. The program was initiated with an objective of introducing mindfulness in daily life at work and home.

The program kicked o with self assessments in groups and experiential workshops. A training program was also conducted to oer practical, scientically proven tools and techniques that are feasible to practise at work and home. Today, we have trained almost 100 employees; looking at the enthusiasm shown, we plan to cover all employees in the coming months. Inculcating mindfulness in daily lives can prove to be a powerful tool to cope with stress and enable increased focus and awareness at work. We are excited to spread this knowledge and practical use of mindfulness across the company in this eort to alleviate individual wellbeing within SJ Contracts!

Incubation Block - Ascendas International Tech Park, Kharadi

The Incubation Block project was awarded to SJCPL in January 2019 — this is the rst Design & Build Turnkey project awarded to SJCPL. The Design phase included preparation of working drawings, structural design, and MEP design. The Building phase included all civil works, MEP, facade works, as well as getting all statutory approvals required for commencement and completion of the project. The total built up area for this project was 120000 sq ft.

The construction work began in March 2019, and our Civil team completed the shell work for 2 basements + ground oor + 4 oce oors in just 6 months. For the typical oce oors, we could achieve a 12 days oor-to-oor slab cycle.

We will deliver this project in December, which means a total construction duration of only 10 months!

Our team led by Mr Gajanan Vedpathak coordinated seamlessly with all consultants, MEP vendors, civil vendors, and liasoning authorities to deliver this fast track project.
