Hatch ‘em - Match ‘em & Dispatch ‘em I am honored to be writing the article for the Messenger, as Pastor Doug has moved on and Pastor Dave has not yet arrived. Therefore, I guess that leaves the Director of Discipleship & Family Ministries. Have you ever wondered what my job title really means? I know I have! Over the last almost 2 years, I have struggled with what my duties are, as often I would feel as if I were not earning my keep. Pastor Doug would always tell me “You just relax,” and tell me I was doing just what I was supposed to do. Miss Jodie would introduce me as Doug’s “right-hand woman,” and whisper to me that I helped keep him calm. What does DISCIPLESHIP mean? Discipleship is teaching biblical precepts, while modeling and guiding others toward living righteously as followers of Jesus Christ. This should be a cyclical process—meaning once we are discipled, we are to disciple others, and so on. One of the most important characteristics of being a disciple (a student or pupil), is to develop an intimate relationship with God through Christ rather than just learning about Him. Discipleship equips the Christian with God’s Word, prayer, doctrine, worship, encouragement, and service. My definition? LOVING others as you would love yourself. Did I grow up knowing the Bible or God? No. Do I read the Bible every day? No. Do I get upset with people easily? YES! None of those qualities make me any less of a disciple than you. We all have our faults; God knows this. We all sin; God knows this, too. When I applied for this position, I don’t believe I did it for myself. I felt bad for Doug; he was doing all of the work by himself (with Miss Jodie) and I felt he was asking for help. (Don’t tell him that!) I prayed and prayed, “How could I be the right person for this job?” Me, who was FAR from perfect, far from knowledgeable of the Bible and whose life was not always God- like. What qualities could I offer? I had GRACE. I have always had Grace for others; do unto those as you will have done onto yourself. God taught me early on to not judge (although I do!), as there are always others with worse circumstances than my own. Unless we are walking in their path, we do not know all The Messenger A monthly publication from First United Methodist Church of Boone. July 2019 that someone else is going through. I did not have the teachings to properly do this job; however, Doug and SPRC gave me the chance, the opportunity, to become the job. Little did I know, accepting this position would change ME. I took the job to help Doug, not knowing I would be intertwined into many lives; lives of youth who have bad home lives, lives of people who have no family or estranged family, lives of people who needed someone to care. When you shake hands with someone, do you ever truly look at them? Do you look into their eyes? Are they happy? Are they sad? Or are you simply doing “the deed” and shaking the hand? Many times when we say “How are you?” do we care about the answer? Our church family is filled with many members who have love and grace; it is also filled with some who do not. Maybe those need extra love, an extra smile; do not stand in judgement of them. Show them GRACE. My goal is to make our church THE BEST! I want the love from inside of our church to flow fast and furious out of our walls into the community, being disciples! We need to share what God has given us to everyone, giving them the opportunity to feel the Lord’s love and the Holy Spirit. You know, that feeling when the sermon hits you, and you realize God is talking through the pastor to YOU; or when you smell that fresh cut green grass or hay, or when you see the beautiful sunset and you breath deep. GOD IS SPEAKING TO US; SHARE HIS LOVE. Thank you to all who have reached out to me and thanked me and encouraged me through this journey. I have struggled often about throwing in the towel, but then Justin Crocheck preaches an amazing sermon, and through his poems I realize this job is NOT mine, it is God’s. GOD put me here and I am doing great things and will continue to do great things, and there are many more… GREAT THINGS TO BE DONE. Jeremiah 29:11 "'For I Know The Plans I Have For You' Declares the Lord, 'Plans to Prosper You and Not to Harm You, Plans to give You Hope and a Future.'" Blessings, Jennifer

WHO DOESN’T LOVE PIE AND ICE CREAM!! Support the UMW by enjoying delicious home-made pies with a scoop of ice cream, while listening to the relaxing tunes of our own Boone Municipal Band! Bring your lawn chairs, sweet tooth

and a few dollars on Wednesday, July 10th!

WELCOMING RECEPTION:

Join us July 7th between services to welcome Pastor

Dave Swinton and wife Shari to their new church.

A VOLUNTEER is described in the dictionary as one who enters into, or offers himself for, any service of their own free will. The Worship Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank the numerous volunteers who serve this church during the two worship services each Sunday morning. The Chancl Choir, Handbells, and Praise Band are all volunteers who bring their love of music to our ears to enjoy and be blessed. There are volunteer soloists, pianists, and organists with their own individual talents who bring special music to us. Volunteer ushers, acolytes, greeters, power point, and sound system folks all take time to “man their stations” during worship service. Preparing and serving the elements each month takes several volunteer communion stewards. There is also a group who volunteer to come each week to fold bulletins so you have that information in hand during church. I know doubt have forgotten other “behind the scene” volunteers, but I’m sure you get the picture. We applaud each and every one of you for offeing yourself to serve of your own free will for the betterment of our Worship ervices. (There is always a place for more volunteers in the above mentioned area if YOU are interested.) Worship Committee, Jacquie Grow

TAKING NOTE… -- WELCOMING RECEPTION: A welcoming reception for Pastor Dave and wife Shari will be held July 7th, between services, in Fellowship Hall. Let’s show them our overwhelming LOVE! -- COTTAGE VISITS: Pastor Dave has set aside an evening once a week for Cottage visits. These are where an individual will host a small gathering of 15 or less people, either in their home or church parlor. Pastor Dave feels these are a way of meeting his congregation on a more personal level. Sign-up sheets are in the Narthex. -- VOLUTEERS NEEDED: Please sign-up to help serve at the Iowa Municipal Band Festival July 13th. The Music Department will be serving from 2 pm to 6 pm. The more volunteers the less work! Pie makers also wanted! Sign-up sheets in the Narthex. Thank you! -- SOAP MAKING: Currently the soap is scheduled for July 25. It is in talk to see if the other community churches would like to take a month to make it, so First UMC is not doing it every month, as volunteers are slim and life is busy. Please watch the bulletin and Facebook for updates. -- VOLUNTEERS IN GENERAL: There is always a need for an impromptu slot to fill, whether it be acolyting, nursery, greeter, usher, Power Point, etc. If you are interested in being on a “back-up” list, please let Jennifer know. DRIVERS are also needed to give rides to fellow parishioners. THANK YOU!,

235 Café suspended…

The 235 Café is on hold for the summer months due to lack of volunteers. It may

return in the fall. If you would be interested in helping, please speak with Mary Anderson.

Thank you.
