White, Ed.D., Vice President for University Engagement at Cleveland State Universit Dr. White is responsible for developing strategic plans for community engagement to enhance CSU's numerous partnerships. He has a rich career in journalism, including writing and editing for The Cincinnati Post and Chicago Tribune. White has a doctorate in higher education management from the University of Pennsylvania, a master's degree in social science from the University of Chicago, and a bachelor's degree in journalism from Ohio University. About 120 parents, students, and special guests attended the breakfast. The Concept Schools Science & Engineering Fair (CONSEF) was heldat the Cleveland Convention Center in Cleveland on Saturday April 18,2015. Over 800 projects were presented representing all 30 Concept-managed schools from 5 states, and many other local schools. HSACleveland High School is thrilled to announce our results.

HSA Students at BEST Medicine Fair

Three HSA students participated in the 5th"Bridging Engineering, Science, andTechnology in Medicine" (BEST Medicine)Engineering Fair on Saturday, March 14th,2015 at the University of Akron. JROTC News

Military Ball

HorizonScienceAcademy heldits annualMilitary Ball onFriday, April17, at 6 p.m.at the school.This eventcelebrates the75 cadetswho are partof HSA's Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC)program. The keynote speaker was Lieutenant Colonel Scott L.

Bartley, Cleveland Recruiting Battalion Commander.

The Army-sponsored JROTCprogram at HSA was awardedthe status of Honor Unit thisyear. HSA is the only publiccharter school in Ohio with anactive JROTC program andcurrently has 65 participatingcadets. The purpose of JROTCis to instill in students the valuesof citizenship, service to theUnited States, personalresponsibility and a sense ofaccomplishment.

Academy Day

The JROTC program hosted Academy Day on April 25.Representatives from the offices of Congresswoman Marcia Fudge andSenator Rob Portman attended this event. All service academiesparticipated along with the John Carroll University ROTC programofficials. This annual event provides students and their families anopportunity to learn more about the US service academies. Civilian Aide

Lawyer and NASA Special Visitors

Tierra Everette, Esq. Counsel for Dominion

visited the school last month. This was herfirst visit and school tour.

Dr. Woodrow Whitlow, currently executive in

residence at Cleveland State University andlongtime NASA leader, toured the school onMonday, March 23 and had an opportunity tomeet with some of our pre-engineering andSTEM team students. Dr. Whitlow will be thecommencement speaker at the May 29graduation ceremony.

HSA Open House with Sam Sylk

HSA hosted an enrollment Open House onMarch 21 with a live remote hosted by DJSam Sylk of 93.1 WZAK. A second openhouse was held on April 25 and the final oneof the year is scheduled for Saturday, May

16, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. This will be a

campus-wide event.

5K Run

HSA Army JROTChosted a 5K Run onSaturday, April25th. Nine of ourJROTC Cadetsparticipated, as well asCadets and cadre

members from John Carroll University ROTC, and future Soldiers andRecruiters from the Cleveland Recruiting Command. In all, we had 40runners. After registration, stretching, and a safety brief, the runnersset out on a 3.1 mile run on the Cleveland Metro-parks ScenicBikeway along the lakeshore. All runners finished the course and weretreated to refreshments after the run. This run was part of a worldwideeffort by JROTC/ROTC programs to get in the Guinness Book of WorldRecords for the "most participants in a 5K run (multi-location)."

Turquoise Art and Language Contest

The Turkish Kafkas Dance Team moved on to the Turquoise Art andLanguage contest in Chicago on April 25, where they earned a 3rdplace prize. The Turkish dance team members are: Zulymar ArellanoLatorre, Jelani Bailey, Aneesah Hill,Essynce Mitchell, Jazzmine Peters,Nanette Vega, Oscar Rivera, Omar Rivera, Jeremil Rodriguez Diaz,TiaShawn X Jackson, and Daniel Miranda.

HSA's Hispanic Dance alsocompeted and placed 3rd in astiff competition.

Dragons Baseball Victory

Our HSA Dragon boys baseball team pulled offan extra inning, came from behind, andachieved a 5 to 4 victory over the Grand RiverEagles. After a rough start, trailing 4-1, ourboys bounced back in dramatic fashion. Led onthe mound by junior ace, Jordan Johnson, our

Dragons brought home the first victory of theseason. Jordan through 7 and 2/3 innings of nohit baseball with 16 strikeouts, earning the win,while Oscar Rivera went 5 for 5 at the plate,

hitting the game winning, walk-off single to drivehome Marlon Lopez. Carlos Massa and Justin Prather also played

key roles in our victory.
