SCHOOL NEWSMural Dedication in Memory of Emanuel Frankel z''l This morning, the entire SARcommunity gathered on the fieldto dedicate the SAR mural thatwas designed by SAR parentDonna Salamon and created byour students and volunteers withDonna's guidance last year. Wewere joined by the Raice Familyto honor the memory of theirfather and grandfather, EmanuelFrankel z"l.

Mr. Frankel was a man who livedhis life following the pasuk, V'Asita Hayashar v'hatov b'einei Hashem which was our theme of the year lastyear. Following his passing, his family found a video of him speaking about the importance of living your life by thatmantra. To learn important lessons about life from Mr. Frankel, each class watched this video and discussed who he wasand how he lived his life.

During the program, we were honored to hear from Rabbi Krauss and from Deborah Raice Fox, daughter of EmanuelFrankel z"l, and mother of teacher Ayala Raice and former teacher Batya Sharbat. She spoke to our students and facultyabout carrying her father's message to the world. We also had the zechut to learn from Rabbi Avi Weiss, and at the endof this meaningful program, we sang the Theme song from last year.

THIS WEEK IN THE EARLY LEARNING CENTER

K3 Visits the Chesed TentThis week, the atrium at SAR is adorned with a large open tent. This tent ismeant to portray the tent of Avraham and Sarah. Because Avraham and Sarahwere chesed oriented people and were always looking to do good deeds, so tothis tent became an arena for the entire school to visit and do acts of chesed. K3visited the tent on Monday and were greeted by Niti Minkove, the director ofsocial services at BJCCS. She explained to the children that elderly people don'tget to go to as many parties as they do. In fact, they don't get out very often atall. With that in mind, the children began making a decorative welcome sign forthe "Dreidle Ball", the Chanukah party that over 70 elderly people attend!

In addition, K3 went back to the tent on Friday to be greeted by SAR's ownAvraham and Sarah! What amazing experiences we had in the tent this week.

THIS WEEK IN THE LOWER SCHOOL1st Grade Learns about MitzvotAs preparation for Parshat Vayera, Kita Alef learned about אורחים הכנסת and the importance of doing Mitzvot. Weprepared sandwiches and bags of food for a soup kitchen. We enjoyed listening to the story "Bagels for Benny" and wewere very excited to stand in the tent just like Avraham and Sara. We hope to learn from them and do many good deedsin the future.

5th Grade Melave MalkaThe fifth grade Melave Malka was a huge success this past Motzei Shabbat! Fifth graders and their parents joinedtogether to celebrate the beginning of learning Torah She’beal Peh. The students learned, heard divrei Torah from theirclassmates, ate delicious food, and danced. The fifth graders put a lot of work into the evening. The students spent anafternoon last week studying the timeline of Torah She’beal Peh. They then created chains, which were on display in thegym. The chains represented the chain of tradition from the Tanach, through the Tanaaim, Amoraim, Rishonim, Achronim, the students' grandparents, parents, and the students themselves.

Moreover, the students researched their own names and created beautiful projects and frames, which were alsodisplayed at the Melave Malka. Thank you to Morah Adiella for her tireless efforts in helping the fifth graders create suchbeautiful projects. We hope to continue the learning of Torah with the same enthusiasm that was felt on Saturday night!

5th Graders Give BackThis week, for Parshat Vayera, the fifth grade students learned about the importance of Chesed. When visiting SAR’sfamous “Chesed Tent,” the students had an opportunity to take part in an important act of giving through the organizationMSAWI (Major Stuart Adam Wolfer Institute). Each student was able to pack a pair of warm socks to keep the U.S. troopsnice and comfortable. Along with the warm socks, they included calling cards, candy, and toothbrushes. Most importantly, the fifth grade students wrote warm letters expressing their gratitude for keeping our country safe. A particular powerfulpoint was learning about the importance of mundane items like socks, in the day to day life of a solider. The fifth gradersfelt a new appreciation for having various pairs of socks at home, and were excited to be part of such a wonderfulorganization.

All of the teams did a wonderful job, arguing issues on crime, border patrol, and historicalevidence. Congratulations to Yavneh Academy for winning this debate.

Generations of IsraelThis week, a delegation of students from Tel Aviv University via the organization Generations of Israel visited SAR toteach our Middle School students about different aspects of life in Israel. Each small group met with two of our Israelivisitors to learn about topics such as the IDF, the geography of Israel, music and cuisine in Israel, the legacy of ShimonPeres, z”l, and more! We very much enjoyed further connecting to Israel’s culture and history with our guests.

STEM CORNERDash and Dot Robots

A group of fourth grade SAR Academy students has formed a team to compete in the National Wonder League RoboticsCompetition. This self selected team works with Morah Rivka Heisler after school on Wednesdays, navigating the Dashand Dot robots to complete a series of challenges using the Wonder App. The theme for this year's competition is "AnimalHabitat Rescue" and the challenges involve writing code to help navigate dash around the island to save various animalhabitats. Examples include planning how to program Dash to circle the baby bunny to establish a conservation area aswell as to push garbage away from Dot, the pregnant sea turtle.

As the challenges have gotten increasingly complicated, students have had to write algorithms with decision trees inorder to program successfully. Here is a video of Dashdetecting Dot and circling her 3 times.

Engineering Waterworks Clusters

After covering most of the theoretic background for ourengineering waterworks project (including the concepts offorce, work and energy), we learned about the engineeringproject design structure (beginning with setting the goal, understanding what we are going to build, planning, designingand drawing our plan, and building the product according to aset of instructions). We implemented those stages through asimple project, a little rubber band shooter, that we planned, built and tested during today's session. The image to the rightillustrates the testing stage of our rubber band shooter afterbuilding it. We also used our theoretic background toinvestigate the concepts of potential and kinetic energy.

In our next session, we are going to begin with the actualwaterwheel engineering planning and design. Then, we willbuild and test our product!

DVAR TORAHParshat Vayera By Yonatan Schwartz, 4th Grade

In the beginning of this week's parsha, Avraham sits at the entrance to his tent during the hottest part of the day. He is stillsick from his Brit Milah. Why does Avraham sit at the opening of his tent during the hottest part of the day when he's stillnot feeling well?

Rashi says that Avraham did this so he could see if there were any people walking by, to welcome them into his tent.Avraham wanted to do the Mitzvah of Hachnasat Orchim, even though he wasn't feeling well. Avraham got to do thisMitzvah when he saw three people (but they were really angels!) walking by.

We can learn from Avraham to do Hachnasat Orchim and all mitzvot even when we're not feeling so well. It's importantto do mitzvot whether we're in a good mood or in a bad mood. When your family has a guest

to do mitzvot whether we're in a good mood or in a bad mood. When your family has a guestover, you can offer them a drink, something to eat, and talk with them to make them feelwelcome. This is one way we can try to be like Avraham.
