Parents are an important part of 4-H. One of the 4-H Leader E-forums that was held this year included valuable information on how parents can help their child in 4-H.

Expectations of 4-H parents include: Encouraging members to participate in and complete 4-H activities

and projects Advising children with 4-H project selection Being knowledgeable and informed about 4-H Guiding, advising, teaching and counseling members; but don’t do

the work for them Setting a positive example in good sportsmanship Encouraging children whether they succeed or fail Helping children make decisions and choices to reach their full po-

tential Supporting the 4-H club as a positive parental influence At a recent 4-H event held in Woodbury County an evaluation was done. One question was asked on how the 4-H’er heard about the event. Over half of the participants said from their parents. Parents do make a difference in 4-H.

Livestock Identification due in 4-H Online by May 15

All livestock animals to be shown at the Woodbury, State and Clay County must be identified in 4-H Online by 11:59 p.m. on or before May 15. Animals that need to be identified: breeding heifers, cow/calf pairs, dairy cat-tle, dogs, feeder calves, goats (dairy and fancy goats that are already tattooed), horse (will need 4 pictures of your horse: front/back and both sides), llamas, and swine.

Please go to https://iowa.4honline.com/ - to identify your animals. This is the same site that each family used when they enrolled in 4-H.

If 4-H families do not have a computer or access to a computer, they may come into the Extension Office – please make an appointment first. 4-H Online is a web-based program, families could use a computer at a li-brary, school or even a smart phone.

NO paper forms will be accepted from 4-H Members (FFA members will need to fill out paper ID forms). See the March 4-H Scene for more details: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/woodbury/4h

Please do not wait until the last day to identify your animals; it is extremely busy that week and you may not get your questions answered.

4-H’ers, Clover Kids and Youth interested in 4-H Must be Enrolled by May 15

All 4-H’ers, Clover Kids and youth interested in joining 4-H must be enrolled by May 15 to be able to exhibit at the Woodbury County Fair. That means you must enroll in 4-H Online and your enrollment fee must be into the Extension Office by May 15. You can enroll in 4-H Online at https://iowa.4honline.com by 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15. New families not already in 4-H must first contact the Woodbury County Extension Office so that a profile can be set up for your family.

Iowa State University College of Design is pleased to offer two art and design focused workshops at ISU Design

West, 1014 ½ Design Place, in downtown Sioux City. Explore Design! and Design Innovation workshops are open

to all 4-Hers (and non 4-Hers) entering 6th grade through recent 12th grade graduates. Participants will leave both

workshops with projects ready for the fair including goal sheets.

Explore Design! (Tuesday, June 10) is a one-day design experience that introduces students to a variety of dif-

ferent media and topics in art and design. Registration is $25.

Design Innovation (June 11-13) is a two and a half day workshop in which 4-Hers will learn about careers in de-

sign through hands-on projects, tours and panel discussions with college students and design professionals. Reg-

istration is $75. Register for both workshops and the cost is only $90. The registration fee includes all neces-

sary art materials, snacks, transportation, and meals. See enclosed flyer for registration information.

4-H’ers for 4-H Campaign

4-H’ers for 4-H Campaign kicked off on March 1 and will run through June 1. Information will be sent directly to 4-H Club leaders by the State 4-H office. Contributions are used for State 4-H Conference, financial assistance and other projects voted upon by the State 4-H Council. A suggested donation is $2.50 per 4-H member, but any amount is appreciated.

4-H Dog Obedience and Handling Classes

4-H Dog Obedience classes will start June 1, 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 pm. The last 1/2 hour of classes will focus on handling. Classes will be held at the Woodbury County Fairgrounds. Other dates include: Sunday June 8, 15, 22 & 30, and July 6, 13 and 20. The 4-H Dog Superintendents, Jill Tentinger and Jamie Johnson will be holding the classes at the Woodbury County Fairgrounds in Moville, Iowa. 4-H’ers must bring proof of current rabies and other vaccinations to the first class. Please bring a 6 ft. leather lead to class. 4-H dogs must be identified in 4h Online at iowa.4honline.com by 11:59 p.m. May 15. 4-H’ers may enter two dogs in the obedience classes if the dogs are in different classes. If you have any question and need more information on the 4-H Dog Program, please contact Jill Tentinger at 712-898-1895 or Jamie Johnson at 712-253-3336.

Rabbit Tattooing |June 24

4-H’ers exhibiting rabbits at the Woodbury County Fair must have their rabbits tattooed. For those without tattoo equipment, a tattooing date is set for Tuesday, June 24 from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Woodbury County Fairgrounds. Contact 4-H Rabbit Superintendents Teresa Lewis (712) 384-2420 or Tammy Brady (712) 258-2021 if you have questions. Tattoos are $1.00 each.

Pullorum Testing for Poultry | June 29

All poultry exhibited at county fair must come from U.S. Pullorum-Typhoid clean or equivalent flocks (this means the location where your poultry is housed is NPIP certified (National Poultry Improvement Plan) or have a negative Pullorum-Typhoid test within 90 days of public exhibition and the test must have been performed by an authorized tester. The majority of 4-H members who exhibit poultry will not be NPIP certified and will have to have their birds tested if they plan to exhibit at county fair. The coun-ty testing date will be held on Sunday, June 29, 4:30 p.m.- 7:00 p.m. at the Woodbury County Fair-grounds. Cost is 50 cents per bird (except doves and pigeons). 4-H members may have another Iowa certified tester test their birds, which needs to be done within 90 days of the county fair. For a list of testers, contact the Iowa Poultry Assoc. at: http://www.iowapoultry.com/. For questions on the county testing date, please contact one of the 4-H Poultry Superintendents: Mi-chael or Mike Beavers (712) 944-5140 or Jared Schramm (712) 870-0044. The Woodbury County Cattlemen’s Association is once again sponsoring the annual Bucket/Bottle Calf Event to be held at the Woodbury County Fair July 30— August 3 In Moville. Exhibitors must have completed Kindergarten through 4th Grade. (Transitional Kindergarten or 4 year old Preschool is in-cluded at parent’s discretion.) To be eligible to show, Entry forms are due June 1. Feeder Calves and County Fair Pigs Need an Official Iowa 4-H Tag

4-H’ers and FFA members planning to exhibit feeder calves and/or pigs at the Woodbury County Fair and Clay County Fair – must be tagged on or before May 15. Tags must be the official Iowa 4-H tag. Feeder calves and pigs (not pigs that were weighed as pig-of-merit) must be identified on or before May 15 in 4-H Online at: https://iowa.4honline.com/. FFA students must fill out a paper identification form. Tags are available at the Woodbury County Extension office and cost $1.00 per tag.

Bottle Lamb Registrations

Youth interested in exhibiting bottle lambs at the County Fair – it is time to register! The class is open to any youth who have completed transitional Kindergarten – 3

rd grade. Entry Forms are due June 1

Register NOW! Iowa 4-H Conference 2014: Ticket to Success

The 2014 Iowa 4-H Conference will be held on June 24-26 on the campus of Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. This year’s theme is Ticket to Success. 4-H’ers and youth not in 4-H who have com-pleted 8th grade this spring to 12th graders will be able to select workshops, attend dances, meet teens from across Iowa and have the best 3 days of fun! Youth may also select to attend ROUND-UP or CSI:Crops. Cost to attend is $175 (and includes a T-shirt).

You must be registered by 11:59 p.m. on May 30; on May 31 the price goes up to $200. On June 10 all registrations are closed. To register: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/iowa4hyouthconference 4-H members will need to register through ISU Registration Services and payment is sent to the Woodbury County Extension Office. Plans are again to have a bus go down on Monday, June 23. There is no cost for Woodbury County 4-H members to ride the bus, but it is on a first come first serve basis. There is also an extra cost to stay at the dorms on June 23. Adults are needed to chaperone the Woodbury delegation – there is no cost for adults.

There will be a mandatory meeting for all Woodbury participants who attend the Iowa State Confer-ence, Round-up or CSI: Crops. At the meeting you will meet other delegates, find out what to bring, bus schedule and expectations. More details on date and location will be in the next 4-H Scene. State Council member Alex Pulford will be helping with the meeting.

Regional Senior 4-H Retreat | June 3

The 2014 Clover Games…Experience the Adventure!

Will you survive? Your tribe will participate in physical and intellectual challenges and will cooperate to help prepare part of the delicious outdoor meal. All 4-H members in 8th-12th grade throughout Northwest Iowa are invited to attend “The 2014 Clover Games” at the Prairie Heritage Center in O’Brien County (4131 Yellow Avenue, Peterson, IA). This will be held on Tuesday, June 3rd from 4:00 p.m. —8:30 p.m. The afternoon and evening will be filled with awesome outdoor activities and outdoor cooking! This will be a great way for you to meet and have fun with other 4-H members your age from Northwest Iowa.

The cost will be just $15 per participant and Woodbury County 4-H Foundation will pay $10 of your fee that makes the fee to attend just $5 (which covers all supplies and food for the evening). Registration information is available at the Woodbury County Extension Office and will be due by Friday, May 30th.

The Iowa State Fair will be held August 7 -17, 2014. Livestock, dog and horticulture (vegetables) entries are due in 4-H Online on or before July 1. The livestock 4-H section of the Iowa state fair is located at: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/statefair/livestock Entries are due in 4-H Online

4-H’ers must be currently in 5th – 12th grade to exhibit at the Iowa State Fair in 4-H. There is also a Pre-order for admission tickets. 4-H Building exhibits, communications and clothing event pro-jects are selected for state fair during judging. Defined STEM: The New Fair Class

Explore Defined STEM, one of the Iowa Governor’s STEM Hub Grant programs, at a May 28 work-shop. Defined STEM allows you to combine online learning in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics with 4-H project learning. The three Defined STEM categories highlighted at this year’s fair are: Wind Energy Business, Engineering Space Robots, and Restaurant Owner – The Clover Bis-tro.

Join us on May 28, 2014 from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Woodbury County Extension Office at 4301 Ser-geant Road, #213, Sioux City, Iowa. We will learn how to access the website and what exhibits are possible in the class. In order to inspire you to become the Restaurant Owner of the “Clover Bistro” we will be making Sundaes. 4-H’ers, parents, and volunteers are all welcome to attend. If you have a tablet or a smart phone, bring it along. We will have a limited number of iPads available at the work-shops.

4-H Cook This! Preliminary Competition

The 4-H Cook This! Culinary Challenge will hold a preliminary competition on the ISU campus on Wednesday, June 18. The preliminary is for all youth participants in grades 5-12. The event will con-sist of a culinary, communication, and food and nutrition challenge to test participant’s food and nutri-tion knowledge and to see if they can Cook This! Top teams from each age division will then be se-lected to compete in the finale on Thursday, August 7 at the Iowa State Fair. Applications will open for the event next week on the 4-H Cook This! webpage: www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/statefair/cookthis. Applications will close on Monday May 30, 2014.

4-H members must identify their animals by May 15 in 4-H Online https://iowa.4honline.com/ by 11:59 p.m. Those animals include: dogs, swine, breeding heifers (includes feeder calf), horse, rabbit (rabbits by July 1 for State Fair and May 1 for Clay County), Poultry (Clay county only – by May 1), Dairy Cattle and Dairy Goats.

Please Note: You can only identify so many animals in each species – for the list of animals please go to the 4-H Livestock Homepage at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/projects/livestock and download a copy of the 4-H 202 publication.

Animals that come to a tagging and weigh-in (market beef, market sheep, pig-of-merit and meat goats) will be entered by Extension staff, but will need to be verified by the 4-H member.
