1. Sorry, John! Occasionally, when a member of staff swears, they notice that I, the chaplain, am present and immediately apologise, “Sorry, John.” This is interesting for various reasons. Do they think that chaplains have never heard swear words? Do they think chaplains are more offended than others who hear swear words? It can be a bit embarrassing when people say, “Sorry, John” after swearing. How-ever, it can also be funny. Someone swears, so the follow-up com-ment is “Sorry, John.”

2. All jokes aside, “sorry” is a great word to be heard around the Home. All this has led me to reflect on the word “sorry”. When I think about it, I consider “sorry” is a wonderful word to be heard around this Christian home. As Christians, we gladly admit that we do wrong. When we unin-tentionally or intentionally have done something wrong to another person we are willing to say, “I’m sorry.” Christians receive forgiveness from God through Jesus Christ, and so want to pass on forgiveness to others.

3. People find it hard to use the word “sorry”. It also seems to me that many are finding it harder and harder to say “sorry”. For ex-ample, I was at a restaurant recently and pointed out that my bill was wrong. Then the person concerned said they had fixed it. Then I noticed, it still hadn’t been corrected. So, I pointed this out and was given a refund. There was no, “I’m sorry.” People who never admit wrongdoing are hard to live with, as they must always be right.

4. Sorry is a great indication that the Christian ethos is around! So, please keep using the word “sorry” at Tanunda Lutheran Home. It’s a courageous word to say, but it really helps people get along. We constantly do wrong, and need to say, “I’m sorry.” This contributes to the Christian ethos of our Home.

The rainfall for December is a little below the average as is the total for the year. Most months this year were well below average but good rains fell in February, June and July. Since Tanunda recordings began in 1868 there have been two Decembers with no rain. The wettest

December was in 2010– when 177.4 fell. The wettest year was 1992 with 872.6 recorded. The driest year was 1967 with 246.4 mm.

It is now Christmas with the New Year loom‐ing ‐ where did the year go? Is it just me or are the years going by quicker? At the writing of this report for the Tit Tat I have been working for nearly 3 months at TLH. The experience has been both profes‐sionally and personally very satisfying. There have been some changes made and there will probably be more to come but it is in the bet‐ter interest of the residents, staff and the business. The future for TLH looks exciting with what is being planned. Over the coming weeks there will be some new staff to meet and improved processes that will see an in‐crease in care, treatments and funding. The Board of Management has agreed to

meet and establish a Strategic Plan for the

next 3‐5 years. This will then allow the estab‐

lishment of an operational plan to ensure the

Key Performance Indicators are monitored

and met.

To assist in the management of TLH a Senior

Management Team has been established. It is

planned that the team will be involved in con‐

firming the operational direction and improv‐

ing overall communication throughout the

TLH. Training will be provided to all members

to develop professional and managerial per‐

formance.

The roster review has been successful with all staff confirming their acceptance of the ros‐ter. Following a period of monitoring of the roster some minor changes have been made to assist in the day to day running of the clini‐cal areas. If the changes prove to be success‐ful the shifts will become permanent. A very successful visit from the Department of

Social Services to review the HACC program ‐

the Barossa Club ‐ occurred during the 9/10

December 2014. Excellent feedback was re‐

ceived from the surveyors. A big thank you to

all staff and volunteers that assisted in the

preparation of the survey.

There will be an increased importance on con‐tinuous improvement as we move towards accreditation next year. There will be a survey in March 2015 followed by our major review in July 2015. Please assist by being involved in audits or surveys as they occur. We welcome your feedback. Finally, I do hope all residents, their families,

staff and all our Stakeholders have a Merry

Christmas and a Happy New Year. Please en‐

INDEPENDENT LIVING RESIDENTS CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS On 11th December 2014

Thanks to the combined planning efforts of resi-dents from Hilda Schulz Drive, 35 Langmeil Road and Obst Court, a very happy and worthwhile pro-gram was enjoyed by all IL residents at their an-nual pre-Christmas luncheon. We are always delighted to welcome our Board members to the occasion and appreciate the fel-lowship whilst they wait on tables and keep the drinks topped up. Our men had put the tables in place the previous afternoon and committee members and program arrangers beautifully decorated them and set up for 72 expected guests. Drinks and nibbles were enjoyed as residents ar-rived and were seated. Marilyn Langley first wel-comed everyone, and on a very sad note we learned of the death of Carolyn Redden’s mother. We send loving sympathy to Carolyn on the sad loss she and her family have sustained. Dorcas Kernich from Hilda Schulz Drive, our very efficient Tit Tat Editor, was chosen from the group to be MC for the program. She also made every-one welcome, especially Chaplain Pastor John Thiel. He described how he and wife Ilene made last Christmas so real for their children and grand children—Jesus is our Saviour from sin and death. He specially gave this message of comfort to those who have lost loved ones this year, and led us in a short prayer.

Quite a few carols were sung interspersed during the afternoon At 12.30 Jan Fechner said a special Table Grace prayer and the meal began. Those kitchen ladies have got it down to a fine art with all the hundreds of meals they serve each day, espe-cially at this time of year. Absolutely delicious and I didn’t see one plate go back with any food left on it. Meanwhile other talents were revealed as Dorcas told a joke about a divorce in Cairns, Pastor Max Stollznow read a poem and our new CEO Lee Mar-tin addressed us. At 1.30 the Christmas puddings and custard were served along with tea and coffee and we’d also been enjoying the jugs of fruit cup throughout the meal. Then all of a sudden, quite unexpectedly, Father Christmas arrived to much applause as he delivered gifts to those who had lucky numbers on their pro-gram. Somewhere we squeezed in a message from highly respected Board Chairman Chris Pfeiffer and answers to the table quiz—”Name the Christmas Carol”. Ferne Fyfe managed to get 20 out of 21 cor-rect answers. There was not a sound to be heard as everyone listened intently to Betty Kohlhagen’s reading of “The True meaning of Christmas”. Thanks go to Elaine Leditschke, roving photogra-pher, pianiste Mildred Koch, trumpeter Neville Alderslade and all others who freely contributed

their time and talents. To con-clude, Dorcas read Helen Steiner Rice’s “The Gift of God’s love”

and we sang The Christmas Blessing (Robin Mann & Au-brey Podlich). I add my love and prayers to all for a blessed safe, happy and healthy Christmas and New Year 2015. Myra Othams

Allow me to lead you up the garden path. If I did, then you would find yourself in one of the three beautiful gardens which have been lovingly created by IL resident Joan Minge.

She has a keen love for gardening which she inherited from her mother. Her grandma had a garden full of flowers in all colours and grandpa had his orchard, vineyard and vegetable garden. These and other memo-

ries abound of the family farm in Jindera NSW and the years she spent growing up there with her brother and sister. They would ride their bikes nine miles up and down the hills between their farm and the school in Albury. Then on the way home, trucks from the country would stop and take the children home. Often there would be up to ten children on the back of one truck, bikes and all! “I had a wonderful childhood!” she declares.

Joan moved to Schiller Court in May 2014 after previously living in Lyel Kohlhagen Estate. The first garden she restored is not far from her unit and is known as the Birds ‘n Butterflies Garden (formerly Schiller Court Garden). There are butterfly bushes on which butterflies lay their eggs and the young cater-pillars feed on the foliage. Ceanothus bushes are covered in masses of intensely blue flowers in spring and are a delight to behold. Gypsophila, alstroemerias and rosemary are also in this garden which is only watered once a week using a hand held hose or watering can.

A short walk down Hilda Schulz Drive takes you to Picalilly Place which has plantings of Calla lilies (Joan’s favourites) daisies, gold chrysanthemums and goddess lilies. These flowers are grown for deco-rative purposes and are used in floral arrangements for the Chapel and Home throughout the year. Just down from here we come to Peppertree Garden near Obst Court. This garden was formerly cared for by Rex Leditschke and has now been adopted by Joan. The pepper tree was originally planted many years before TLH was built (do any readers know its history?). There is an old bike leaning against the pepper tree in memory of Rex, and has a trailing ivy growing from its basket. Being a shady area, this gar-den is underplanted with Clivias, bromeliads, ferns and hellebores which are all shade loving plants. In the sunny areas there are plantings of leucospermum, proteas, irises, statice, alstroemerias, dahlias etc. Joan is thrilled with her recent purchase of a holly bush which means there will be plenty of holly which can be used for Christmas decorating in the years to come. There is seating here under the tree which was kindly donated. Visitors and residents are welcome to sit and enjoy the flowers and birds, a warm summer breeze or a chat with friends and family. There is also seating in the other gardens.

Joan’s reason for planting these gardens is to encourage wildlife into the area and for everyone to enjoy them, whether on a morning stroll or people wishing to take a family member in a wheelchair to see them. A love of gardens enhances many lives and brings with it an appreciation of nature's beauty. The spiritual experience in getting back to nature and into gardens is very rewarding. There is a lot of work in maintaining these wonderful gardens and thanks go to Joan and her team of vol-unteers for all their hard work. Anyone wishing to donate money, pea straw or cow, sheep, goat, alpaca manure (these gentle manures are used to improve the soil which means the plants use less water) to keep these gardens flourishing please do so by contacting either Marilyn Langley 8563 7709 or Danny Harkin 8563 7720. RED, WHITE AND FEELING BLUE

The kids were holding a new high school concert, And they said they should keep up the trend. Like top groups who once started as school bands, They told us, how they too might end. Most parents agreed, the idea seemed fantastic, The concept we told them, was almost unique. As grand-parents, we'd help to finance it, Was it 'Peace of mind' we hoped to seek? I remembered recorders, when we were just kids, And our parents had then been the buyers, But I sadly forgot, it's now guitars and key-boards, Drum-kits and much worse; amplifiers. Everybody agreed; the idea sounded good, Quite a few even said, "they'd assist", We'd somehow been adjudged major sponsors, Which meant paying out, hand over fist. As the project progressed, the kids practised a lot, And the noise factor started to grow. We invested in ear-plugs; to help us stay sane, Our hearing protected, we awaited the show. The kids put on a charge, to cover refreshments, With cheap red and white wine supplied. The day was a scorcher, but the wine was ice cold, So, despite the poor vintage a lot was imbibed. The group started off, playing 'Waltzing Matilda'. But the audience joining, sang 'Clip go the Shears', And all those partaking, of cheap red and white, Declared the kids concert, a joy to their ears. As well as the group, other kids played a part, Their performance, unlike that first planned. Some girls did their own special dancing routine, Changing it slightly, once veils were all banned Next day, on reflection, when hang-overs abated, And the alcohol haze seemed quite clear. I was sure kids had grown, in business stature, All this new education, just improves every year. They may never make top-class musicians, Some played as though music, just wasn't required. But I'm sure they'd make great politicians, Like con-men, their ideas, are dollar inspired!

Can you believe we are actually talking about 2015?????? Most of us have lived long enough to be somewhat in awe of the year 2015. I was born in 1943.

I used to be one of the young people!!!!! Where has time gone?

When we have lived over 70 years and more we have been through so many changes. Endings and new beginnings. Happy and sad. That's life.

To be in the TLH Community means we are in a place where change happens often. Staff may resign. New staff and volunteers appear. Changes are made. People come and go.

As we welcome new "New Settlers" in 2015; be they residents, staff, volunteers, friends. May we all be resolved to think about activating the important things that need never change. Faith...Compassion...Friendship...Understanding...Appreciation...Encouragement...Intercession...2015 could be the best year yet for the Tanunda Lutheran Home Community. Let's do it!

THE VINE LEAF is an inspiration of Jan Fechner and we are seeing The Vine Leaf Trail grow in the Barossa Club.

Starting early in the new year we will see Vine and

Leaf art grow even more with poetry and stories as members express their feelings.

The growing of the Vine Art Trail represents our members and the continual growth of the Barossa Club with self-worth and purpose.

Jan’s Challenging Project of Fifty Leaves A talented artist, Jan, IL resident, was challenged to begin this project. Using a huge variety of recycled materials, as well as her collection of odds and ends, Jan kept developing ideas during the cold winter months until the collection grew to around 80 leaves of all colours, shapes, sizes and materials.

Being a Christian Home, she envisaged a central piece depicting the scripture passage where Christ says, “I am the Vine, You are the branches” . The

display is designed to flow out in different directions in a variety of colour, styles and hue to depict the many paths available in which to pursue our individual and collective talents. Thank you, Jan

Strength, Integrity, Selfless- ness

We mourn the passing of much loved and highly respected Wes—a true gen-tleman—well known here at TLH and throughout the community. The large crowd at Wes’s funeral bore testimony to the high regard in which he was held. Wes died at home on 6th December 2014 at the age of 70, having been

lovingly cared for by his wife, Norma.

Wes was a very special gentleman. In spite of his disability and battling MS over more than two decades, he cheerfully spent many hours visiting residents, assisting staff with singing, reading, also interviewing war veterans and extracting from them (with help from his war history books) their unique stories for publication in Tit Tat that became a valuable record for their families.

It’s well over twenty years since Wes began volunteering in the former Woodwork room (where the Café now is) helping construct various items. Wes was a tower of strength on the Palliative Care Team, liaising with the Chaplain and providing compassionate care to residents at the end of life.

Pastor Graham Maas conducted Wes’s funeral on 11th December at the Tabor Cemetery Rotunda prior to the committal. We extend heartfelt sympathy to Norma and family members.

Lee Martin CEO expressed his gratitude to the ca-tering staff as well as the volunteers. He discov-ered from our internet friend Google that there are ten principles of Volunteering, all of which are prac-tised by our TLH volunteers - with no expectation of any return. Lee extended grateful thanks also from board and staff members. It’s good to know that our new CEO is fond of socialising and party-ing, promising repeats of today’s event and he looks forward to meeting us again in the new year. Len Gerschwitz, on behalf of the volunteers, ex-pressed thanks to staff members and all responsi-ble for hosting this special, happy morning tea. He added that it is our privilege to serve, and offered a prayer of thanks for God’s gifts of mercy, grace and love. How thoroughly spoilt we all felt at a most enjoyable Volunteers’ Morning Tea on Thursday 4th December in the Social Centre. Jodie Matthews, our new Man-ager of Volunteers, capably or-ganised a very special event when staff members waited on

almost 50 eager volunteers seated at beautifully decorated tables. Juice, coffee and sweet treats were enjoyed. A lovely laminated message, Dedi-cated Hearts, was a special keepsake to take home, along with a mini Christmas pudding bearing the message from Jodie, May Peace be your gift at Christmas and your blessing all year through. Well done, Jodie.

Pastor Thiel in his address, asked the question, “What is a Volunteer?” He stated that there are good examples in the Bible Christmas narrative-namely Joseph, the Wise Men, Mary, the Shep-herds and Jesus himself who says, “I have come to do the Father’s will.” He died so that we can be saved.

Appropriate pictures with Christmas themes kept rotating on the large screen whilst Jeff Gaskin en-tertained throughout on his accordion, with guests at times singing along with the happy songs and carols .

Jodie welcomed everyone and expressed her ap-preciation of all volunteers. The former Volunteers’ Hub is now situated in the Barossa Club area and Jodie will move into the smaller vacated Hub. She reminded all that a current Police check is vital.

Volunteers celebrating birthdays since July each received a chocolate frog. Clinical Nurse Kylie Wil-liams thanked volunteers for their time, understand-ing, empathy, compassion and dedication, which all contribute so positively to the well being of resi-dents.
