After a successful jaunt through the parks and raising a few flagons of ale, we have

shown the fleet how we can proudly wear the mask but still gather for a cause. We

tasted of the culinary delights of our shipmates, and now we prepare to once again

invade the islands of the songs we love. Tis a fine lot in this raiding party and we shall

miss those who stayed behind. Fear not, we shall think fondly of thee and report back

with tales of merriment as we come into the season of holidays. Pray thee that this

pandemic soon be done and we can all gather again under the black flag. Until then,

cover your faces to protect our mates. And as always, we raise a pint to our mateys.

Happy Halloween and prepare to set sail for Cayo Hueso!

Key West’s Most Haunted – Top 10

Some believe Key West’s limestone foundation anchors spirits of the departed to our island. Others attribute the high rate of paranormal encounters to properties in our surrounding waters. Key West remains one of the most haunted locations in

America, with the dead outnumbering the living 4:1. Whether you take a ghost tour or explore on your own, no visit to Key West is complete without visiting at least one of our 10 most haunted locations.

10. The Key West Firehouse Museum

A young Bahamian girl’s spirit plays in the engine room at night and hides among the artifacts as she follows visitors on tours. A ghost named ‘Frank’ has identified himself to ghost hunting groups and psychics.

9. The Ernest Hemingway Home

Apparently dying does not mean you have to say farewell to arms. The spirit of Ernest Hemingway is seen pacing his second story veranda after hours, even waving to passers-by. Another resident ghost is a woman who smokes outside the

bricked entry at night.

8. The Porter Mansion Residents of the mansion’s upper floors have long reported the bizarre stacking of coins on their dressers and the

sounds of late night chamber music. The ghost of Dr. Porter regularly visits bartenders in the mansion’s first floor bar – often tossing wine glasses from their rack or splitting pint glasses in half.

Key West’s Most Haunted : (continued)

7. Key West Lighthouse Barbara Mabrity kept the Key West Light shining for years and has no intentions of retiring. Her ghost still climbs 88 steps several times a night to make sure everything is in ship shape. Visitors to the keeper’s quarters encounter Key West’s version of Typhoid Mary. Mary and her husband both fell victim to typhoid fever while employed at the site. Dozens of other ghosts roam the lighthouse grounds, including two women seen walking hand in hand, an unknown soldier and a pensive man near

the lighthouse entrance.

6. Old City Jail Tucked behind the courthouse annex off Fleming Street, the old jail has hosted both famous and infamous names from Key West’s paranormal circles. Manuel Cabeza was pulled from his cell here and lynched by the KKK, inspiring a voodoo curse

on the island. Count Carl Von Cosel was held here after being discovered with the long dead body of Elena Hoyos. The surrounding grounds are charged with the residual hauntings of those who were sentenced here and the angry mobs that sometimes gathered in the early days. Though several hanging trees exist across the island, this was the site of our official

gallows.

5. Appelrouth Lane The small lane stretching between Duval and Whitehead Streets hosts a leather shop, gastro pub, guesthouse and the ghost

of a young lady called Noel. Her spirit visits employees in most of the street’s establishments bearing a lost or hopeless expression. When they offer assistance, her human form fades before their eyes. A bartender at the former Appelrouth Grill – now 2 Cents, named Noel. Noel was carrying a bucket and said she was looking for the well. The employee said, “There is no

well,” and the spirit vanished. No well (Noel) stuck.

4. Haunted Masks A pair of carved wooden masks was discovered at a Salvation Army store a decade ago and wasted no time affecting those

who viewed them. Strange dreams involving animal attacks, waking at precisely 5:00 AM to a dark shadow beside their bed, and the spirits of a woman with child looking on with concern. The masks are now on display at Ripley’s Believe It Or Not!

3. The Oldest House One of the oldest surviving structures on the island was home to the Watlington family. Captain Watlington still haunts the captain’s office, while his children’s ghosts play with marbles on the stairs. A mysterious rocking chair at the home moves on its own. One local legend claims Elena Hoyos was buried on the property after her body was discovered in the possession of

Count Von Cosel.

2. Eaton Street Dubbed ‘the most haunted street in Key West,’ Eaton Street is home to a restless sea captain who haunts the graveyard

behind St. Paul’s Church, playful children’s spirits in the former church and theater known as Club Chameleon, a doctor who continues his practice in spirit at The Old Town Manor and Robert The Doll’s former residence – The Artist House.

1. East Martello Robert the Doll is the star attraction at the Fort East Martello Museum where letters line the walls asking

forgiveness for not paying Robert the respect he demands. Cameras malfunction, electronics misbehave, and Robert moves in his case.

Charity Events

As the pandemic continues, so do our efforts to do fund rising for others. We

have limited our attendance at fund raising events but not our efforts. A good

example of this is the very positive reaction to our club cookbook. We are

looking into a second printing. Check our web site for more details.

I, as many of us did, missed having the Family Fest at Misericordia this year. Family Fest is

always held the first Sunday after Labor Day. No replacement event was planned. We are hoping

that this event will be held again next year.

Another event that had a very different look this year was the Alzheimer’s Association Walk. The

first change was going to be a walk in Elk Grove Village instead of the City of Chicago. Well, as all

of you know, Alzheimer’s Association canceled all walks in the country. That did not stop us; we

just adapted our fund raising efforts. We did a mini walk (2.6 miles) on Sunday, October 4, 2020.

We had over 30 members and friends walk around the track at the Rosemont Entertainment

Center. Aside from the prearranged donations, we also raised over $200.00 from walkers and

onlookers that day. Here are the standings of clubs and individals around the county as of October

12, 2020.

1) Shoreline Parrot Heads –Michigan $9001.00

2) Space Coast Parrot Head Club-Florida $7075.00

3) Metro Parrot Head Club –New York $6440.00

4) Chicago Parrot Head Club $6.350.00

5) Phun Coast Parrot Head Club $3,385.00

Great job Chicago!!!!! Just as a reminder the final numbers will be tabulated till December 31,

2020.

Here are the top five (5) individuals Parrot Heads in their fund raising efforts in our Parrot Head

Community, PHIP world.

1) Two Dudes Michigan-Shoreline PHC-$9,001.00. They did many small fund raising events.

They did not do a walk

2) Linda Master –Metro PHC-$6,440.00

3) Bob Noonan-Chicago- PC-$2,165.00

8) Cheryl/Michael Kuropas/Scelonge-Chicago PC-$1.285.00

10) Cheryl Einsele-Chicago PC-$1,010.00

Thank you all who participated in the “Walk” this year, I am very proud to be a part of this group.

If you have raised $100.00 or above, you should be receiving an Alzheimer’s Walk tee shirt in the

mail. If you have not received yours, please let me know by email your size and the address to

which you would like it sent.

This year, as many of you know, Meeting of the Minds has been canceled due to the Pandemic, with

hopes to return next year.

Salt Water Independent Music will have its first event in Key West Wednesday October 28th at

Schooner Wharf Bar. Billy, Kristin and others will be attending and they will share more

information on this event.

A new group of Parrot Heads has been elected to the PHIP Board; look for new and exciting

changes in PHIP. Congrats to all!!!!
