In addition to these prep sessions, students are encouraged to set aside time eachweek to devote toward test prep. We recommend that students work independently onprep materials for at least 30 minutes a day. Mr. Wright is now teaching eighth grade ELA and I am teaching seventh grade ELA.During class yesterday, we began working on literary devices. Eighth grade will spendthe rest of the week working on high school essays as they continue to read Tuesdayswith Morrie. Seventh grade is reading Red Kayak and will learn how to engage moredeeply with text by participating in literature circles. We are currently conducting asearch for a longterm substitute or fulltime teacher. In the meantime, Mr. Wright and Iwill continue to teach all seventh and eighth grade classes.

Finally, our inaugural Math Night is tonight and Family Fit Night is Friday night. Bothevents begin at 6:00 PM. Middle School students who volunteer will earn Stars andStripes points as well as service hours. Don't miss out on a night of fun!

Sincerely,

Brent DawsonMiddle School Dean

Lower School Update

Dear Parents, Tonight is our first annual Math Night for students in KindergartenFifth Grade! We hopeyou can join us from 6:00 to 7:30PM for a celebration of math. The evening will includea variety of activities that focus on making connections between math and our everydaylives. Students who attend will be entered into a raffle and earn a homework pass! During the month of October, I hope to focus on the topic of mathematics education andits relationship to Carol Dweck's Growth Mindset. Below is a series of questions fromthe National Council of Teachers of Mathematics that parents and teachers can use tosupport a Growth Mindset when tackling an unfamiliar math problem. It is our role toguide students through the process. In order to do so, one can ask:

What are you being asked to find out? What does the problem tell you? Have you seen a problem like this before? Is there any part of the problem that you already know how to do?What is unclear about the problem? Where can you find the answers to yourquestions? How could you use a list, chart, table, drawing, or diagram to help solve theproblem? What do you estimate your answer will be? Why?

By engaging in a dialogue that encourages students to make connections, identifyinformation, and create a plan to gather additional information, we are instilling lifelongproblemsolving skills in our children. It is our responsibility to ensure that students areprepared for the 21st century workplace where they will need both a conceptualunderstanding as well as procedural fluency. Sincerely, Rachel MejibovskyLower School Dean

[email protected].

This week, I want to spend some time speaking about planning on the parish, school, andArchdiocesan level. October is the month when I normally discuss plans and goals for theparish. Tomorrow evening, I will meet with the Pastoral Council to finalize the last of threepastoral goals for the parish, which were developed out of the survey we conducted lastApril and the subsequent Town Hall meeting in May. Over these past months, the council, along with the parish staff, has been developing goals in the area of Adult FaithFormation, Youth Ministry, and Music, which will guide the work of the staff over the nextthree years. Over the next several weeks, I'll be sharing these plans with you and theconcrete steps that will be taken to implement them.

Over the past academic year, under the auspices of the school board, The School of theCathedral developed a strategic plan to guide the growth and course of the school overthe next three to five years. Beginning next week, the plan will be shared via social mediaand a series of meetings with stakeholders. Stay tuned for more details.

On the Archdiocesan level, Archbishop Lori has challenged every parish to examine itselfwith any hope of reinvigorating efforts in the work of Evangelization bringing the GoodNews of Jesus to our communities, especially the fallenaway, the disaffected, and thosewho have no church. Evangelization is at the heart of the Church's mission bringingJesus to people and people to Jesus is why the Church and our parish exist. As overseerof the Church's mission in the Archdiocese, Archbishop Lori is faced with the huge taskof carrying out the Church's work with a dwindling number of aging priests and, in somecases, with little by way of financial resources. This reality will necessitate a greatercooperation among Archdiocesan parishes in the work of evangelization. Beginning thisweek, you will begin to hear from the Archbishop concerning the wider planning processnow underway in the Archdiocese.

This week, Fr. Andrew and I will join Archbishop Lori and the other priests of theArchdiocese in a convocation focused on how to help us be more effective as leaders inevangelization. Do say a prayer for us.

We are just a month away from an event that is very near and dear to my heart:HOMECOMING 2016! Another great event is shaping up after last year's great success.HOMECOMING celebrates our life as a Cathedral Parish. Archbishop Keough dedicatedthe Cathedral on November 15, 1959 and HOMECOMING is simply a time to celebrateour life as parishioners of this marvelous parish with such a grand church. Registration forFriday's youth events and Saturday's Bull & Oyster Roast along with a full schedule ofevents may be found on the webpage: www.cathedralofmary.org/homecoming. Mark yourcalendars now for the weekend of November 1113!

So as not to miss Homecoming because of the flu, free flu shots will be available in theParish Center this Tuesday from 3pm to 7pm. My thanks to Community Health at St.Joseph Medical Center for providing the inoculations and to our school nurse, CathyLobo, for making the arrangements. There is no need to preregister.

Hurricane Matthew has dealt another catastrophic blow to Haiti. Proceeds from thisweek's Poor Box will assist recovery efforts in Haiti. Please be generous.
