1 Newsletter No. 20 - Term 2 Week 11 Thursday, 29 June 2017 From the Acting Principal……… We certainly haven’t lost any enthusiasm or momentum in our last week of Term 2 at Kalinda. Monday morning was exciting for all Kalinda students as we unveiled our new Buddy Bench. I would like to extend a very big thank you to the Archer family for donating the Buddy Bench and to the wonderful families who assisted with it’s installation at last weekend’s working bee. If you have not seen it yet, the Buddy Bench is placed behind our flagpole and outdoor stage and allows vision of to and from the basketball court, the junior playground and the senior playground. The Buddy Bench is a simple idea to eliminate loneliness and foster friendship in the playground. Next term our Junior School Council will be working on promoting the instructions for our Buddy Bench, these will include: - Before you sit on the Buddy Bench, think of something you would like to do. Ask someone else to play with you. - While you’re sitting on the bench, look around for a game you can join. - If you see something you want to do or a friend you want to talk to, get off the bench and go join in! - When you see someone on the bench, ask that person to play with you. - If you’re sitting on the bench, play with the first classmate who invites you. - Keep playing with your new friends! Yesterday’s HOT DOG day was a wonderful success. Thank you Justine and all your wonderful helpers for organising this fun lunch for our students! This morning I was very happy to wave our Toast and Tutoring students and their Melba College tutors off on their exciting excursion to Scienceworks. Every Thursday morning over toast and other delicious breakfast treats Melba College students tutor several of our students to whom English is a second language. To celebrate a wonderful term, Melba College have organised an adventurous excursion for our students. They are travelling by train and ferry to Scienceworks. Yet again, we are so grateful to Melba College for the generous and authentic way they support Kalinda. Next term, we are all very pleased to be welcoming back Mrs Gail Pollard from her leave. I will resume my role as Assistant Principal and we are all very excited to welcome and begin working with Mrs Lauren Hopkins our newly appointed Assistant Principal. Again I would like to acknowledge and thank hugely the amazing work that Mr Steve Harvey and Mrs Helen Renehan have done this term in their positions as Acting Assistant Principals. I would also like to extend that thank you to all the staff at Kalinda for their wonderful work with your children this term.

Smaller items (toys, etc.) are normally held at the office. Occasionally, uniform items go home with the wrong child. Please check all your child’s clothing at home and, if you have an item with someone else’s name on it, please return it to the school office. Thank you for your co-operation.

PLEASE NAME ALL ITEMS OF CLOTHING, LUNCHBOXES, DRINK BOTTLES, TOYS, ETC. We would love to be able to return them to your child, if found.

Woolworths Earn & Learn is back and it is now easier than ever to earn valuable resources for our school. Last year we were very fortunate and benefited greatly from the program, boosting supplies in our classrooms and the library.

It's simple to participate. From Wednesday 26th July to Tuesday 19th September 2017, when you shop at Woolworths you can collect Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers from the checkout operator or through an online order and place them on a Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker Sheet. There’ll be one Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker for every $10 spent.

Once completed, simply place the Sticker Sheet in the Collection Box outside the main office.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK!

Lemon delicious is a magic dessert which makes its own sauce. The mixture separates into 2

layers during the cooking to give you a light, spongy top & a lemony sauce underneath – it was

like a big soufflé! It can also be made in 4 dishes of about 3/4 cup capacity each, cooking time

for these 4 individual puddings will be about 25 minutes. Dessert must be made and then

served immediately.

Serves: 4

Cooking time: 45 minutes

Light ‘n’ Luscious Lemon Delicious

What you need: 3 eggs

½ cup castor sugar

250ml (1 cup) milk

1 tablespoon self-raising flour

125ml (½) cup lemon juice

Separate eggs; place whites and yolks into 2 separate small bowls. Add sugar to egg yolks in small bowl, beat with electric mixer until thick and creamy. Gradually beat in milk on low speed, then the sifted flour and lemon juice. Pour into large bowl. Beat egg whites in small bowl with electric mixer until soft peaks form. Fold into egg yolk mixture in 2 batches. Use a plastic spatula for this; do not stir or beat or you will deflate the mixture. Mixture will look a bit curdled, but this is correct. Pour mixture into deep ovenproof dish (4 cup capacity). Stand dish in baking dish; add enough boiling water to baking dish to come halfway-up side of ovenproof dish. Bake at 180°C for about 45 minutes or until firm to touch. Sprinkle with a little sifted icing sugar, if desired. Wendy McLaughlan Kalinda Chef
