>>> "Susan Burgess" <[email protected]> 4/9/2007 1:37 PM >>>Hi Inge,

After consulting my calendar, I realized that I have a doctor's appointment on Thursday the 19th. Is there anyway that I could come Monday and Tuesday (16-17th) or Tuesday and Wednesday (17-18th) of that weekinstead? It would be great if you could tell me as soon as possible so that I can make my travel arrangements.

I'd like to visit the Morgan Library because I'm doing research concerning JP Morgan Jr.'s involvement with Belltelephone (AT&T) at the turn of the century for a book about the evolution of telecommunications in the 20thcentury.

SakI believe I will need two full days to review and copy the holdings that I'm inter sted in:

ADMINISTRATIVE INFORMATION

Processing informationThis collection is not fully processed. In many cases the original file titles have been transcribedfrom the old folders and no further processing or description has yet been undertaken. Originalfile folders have been discarded and replaced with acid-free folders; for the second half of thecollection (rehoused in 2003) the original file tabs were retained. An initial typed inventory ofthis collection was presumably made by Library volunteers; it was checked and augmented in2003. Introductory information by Christine Nelson, 2004.

DETAILED COLLECTION INFORMATION

Biographical note

J. P. Morgan Jr., the son of financier Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913), was known informally as"Jack." He headed the firm J. P. Morgan & Co. after his father's death in 1913. He inherited thebulk of his father's art and library collections, and in 1924 created The Pierpont Morgan Libraryas a public institution. He married Jane Norton Grew (1863-1925) in 1890; they had fourchildren: Junius Spencer Morgan Jr. (1892-1960), Jane Norton Morgan Nichols (1893-1981),Frances Tracy Morgan Pennoyer (b. 1897), and Henry Sturgis Morgan (1900-1982). Morgan'shomes included a brownstone on the corner of 37th Street and Madison Avenue (229 Madison, now 231), New York; Matinicock Point in Glen Cove, Long Island; a townhouse on GrosvenorSquare, London; and Wall Hall, a country estate in the village of Aldenham, near Watford inHertfordshire, England; he also rented a hunting lodge, Gannochy, in Scotland.

Scope and content

The personal papers of Jack Morgan include letterpress books of copies of outgoing

correspondence; cable books; a brief alphabetical series (in two parts) of letters received; and a

large number of subject files on topics including philanthropic activities, family financial matters

(including extensive documentation of the estate of his father), family house inventories and real

estate, clubs and associations, individuals with whom he corresponded, schools and universities

(including Harvard), companies, travel (including information on his yachts Corsair III and IV),

art and library collections, the Morgan Library and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, World War

I, war reparations, and personal ledgers. Although business matters are touched upon throughout

the collection, the papers do not include official records of J. P. Morgan & Co. There is also a

long series of letters from Morgan to his mother, Frances Tracy Morgan.

Arrangement note

Collection is in original order; inventory reflects the order in which items were received at the

Library. File numbers have been assigned in various ways. Boxes 1-30: file numbers derive from

the original numbers on the letterpress volumes. Boxes 31-41: file numbers assigned by Morgan

Library. Boxes 42-49: file numbers reflect alphabetical sequence. Boxes 60-93: file numbers

transcribed from original files; not every file number is present because not all files were received

by the Morgan Library. Boxes 94-115: file numbers (second sequence) transcribed from original

files; not every file number is present. Boxes 116-235: file numbers assigned by Morgan Library.

The box numbers were assigned at the Morgan Library when collection was originally housed in

flat boxes; the collection has now been rehoused in flip-top boxes, but the old box numbers have

been retained for now until the collection is fully processed.

Preservation note

Although the collection is housed in acid-free containers, metal fasteners have not been removedand clippings and brittle items have not yet been photocopied onto acid-free paper.
